  1. I'm not quite sure what to think but I think I liked it? If you can "like" this type of movie. I know I would have been absolutely obsessed with it when I was an angsty 14-years-old. Phoenix was phenomenal and should get an oscar nomination, it was visually stunning and the score is instantly one of my favorites in recent years. I didn't personally feel that it was misogynist or validated alt-right/incels whatever but I can understand the concerns that it demonizes mental illness. Surprisingly I found Arthur sympathetic throughout the entire movie, even in the end. I thought that even though the setting and events are obviously unrealistic it was still rather realistic depiction of alienation and social exclusion and Arthur resembles many troubled people I have known and worked with. Surprisingly my mom who isn't into comic books movies and usually hates anything violent liked it more than me (even though she said it was the bleakest movie she's ever seen) and the audience was very quiet and invested. I think this is going to have a great wom here and elsewhere in Europe because we love both angsty violent movies and anything Batman related. I think the main reason why I didn't fully love Joker that it feels confused and unfocused, like the creators couldn't decide what they want to say, or do they even want to say anything. Like in some ways it really does come across as vindictive power fantasy for bitter people and you feel almost satisfied towards the end. On the other hand it feels like a preachy cautionary tale. Arthur himself says something along the lines of that he isn't political, he "believes in nothing". Still the filmmakers seem to be trying to say something about politics, inequality, mental illness, our culture... except they really don't. Ultimately the whole movie feels somewhat shallow and empty because of it. This is a movie about nothing. Because it can't decide whether to be entirely nihilistic or not it doesn't entirely work, at least not for me. But still I was thoroughly entertained and even a little bit moved so I guess it works well enough. Maybe it's fitting that Joker movie is just like the character: entertaining, confused and chaotic, nasty but weirdly likeable, ambiguous and coming with multiple choice.
  2. Lmao @ those Goldfinch numbers, I thought it was the friday number at first and even that would have been bad. It doesn't surprise me that the movie sucks considering that going by interviews the director seemed to completely miss the message and all the subtext in the book. And just because Goldfinch was a best seller doesn't mean that readers were clamoring for a movie adoption in the first place. Surprisingly low cinemascore for Hustlers since it's supposed to be a crowdpleaser. Maybe the misleading marketing? I guess some Lizzo and Cardi B fans were disappointed that they don't have much screentime and some were expecting a more lighthearted and low-brow movie.
  3. I audibly gasped when I read this holy fuck... the sheer whiplash of seeing the Spidey news and then this like 10 minutes later
  4. He was in like one popular teen movie last year (To all the boys I've loved before), became internet's new boyfriend for a month, then he became overexposed and now suddenly everyone hates him as is the tradition with stan culture...
  5. Thank god, now I don't have to care about this movie lol. I already thought disney defeated me by casting my single favourite person in the world to play my favourite disney prince from one of my favourite disney films. Now I can go back trying to ignore this and other live-action remakes' existence. Unless it will turn out actually good in which case I will be happy of course. I think Harry just has so much going on right now and is too busy to say yes to another big commitment. His second album will probably come out soon and music and movie promo would have overlapped. If Little Mermaid is shooting next spring it may have intervened with his touring schedule too. Maybe it would have worked out, it did with Dunkirk, but he probably doesn't want to go through the same experience again. He wasn't seriously expecting to get cast in Dunkirk so he had to change his original album schedule and do promo for both at the same time while his whole life was changing post-1D and I get an impression he was pretty exhausted at times. I hope he'll act again at some point though when he'll find time for it.
  6. Yeah it doesn't really matter whether they are stars now, after the release of Eternals and becoming part of Marvel aka the biggest star there is, they will be
  7. I think we just define the word "star" differently, some people considering only the most popular, top of a-list actors as stars and some like me think that you only need to be succesful and well known to be that. I would definitely consider at least Salma Hayek and Richard Madden as pretty big stars, Salma is very popular in Europe and Latin America and has been a sex symbol since 90s and Richard Madden's popularity and recognition has blown up after Bodyguard. Just because they are less big than Angelina doesn't mean they aren't stars as well.
  8. I see that while I was asleep everything was on fire the world has descended into madness, beautiful Perhaps this is just my blind undying love and loyalty for Idris and Taylor speaking and I'm going crazy as well but I gathered my courage and watched the trailer again and... it was not quite as bad as the first time? Say what you want but at least it doesn't look anything we've seen before. I could maybe see it working in a really bizarre way if they upgrade cgi over the next six months (strong emphasis on the word maybe). They certainly have made everyone aware of this movie now - my little brother who doesn't watch anything else other than an occasional cbm or horror movie texted me this morning and asked do I know this is a thing (he knows I'm a Taylor fan) and have I seen the trailer. Yeah dude, trust me, I very much know it is a thing and I've seen it. I may never recover. Again, I'm probably going crazy and will regret saying this but I'm having a weird foreboding feeling that this won't turn out half as bad as it looks now. I'm making an ill-advised prediction right now: this will actually be hugely successful, more so than The Greatest Showman, GA will like, it will get better reviews than Lion King, it will get nominated for at least technical awards and Tom fucking Hooper will probably get nominated for the best director again because there is no justice in this wold. If I'm wrong I promise to endlessly drag myself for this in every situation.
  9. You're joking but from quickly checking tumblr and twitter my fellow swifties are genuinely thirsting for cat!taylor already and with zero shame too smh. #disappointedbutnotsurprised
  10. That better be UK time or otherwise I guess I will have to set my alarm for 5 am to witness the end of the world
  11. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first film but this looks awesome!! Amazing trailer
  12. I guess I have to admit he's occasionally funny. I think much of the hate towards Corden comes more from his personality, like he is apparently really full of himself and kissing famous people's ass but treats everyone who isn't celeb like trash, advocated a lower pay for late night writers etc. There are lots of stories of him being a douche like that one where he was on the plane with heaphones on and ignored a woman and her crying baby for the whole flight, but when they landed it turned out they were actually his own wife and baby lol
  13. I mean Taylor has done very little acting, most of it years ago and never in a leading role like this so it's difficult to say how it's gonna go. I think she was bad in Valentine's day (but everyone was bad in that movie) but good in CSI and SNL and her stage presence and acting in music videos is always great. I'm probably biased being a fan but I think there's potential there, we'll see. Corden is genuinely terrible though and I will never understand how he has a career.
  14. You know what? Fuck it, I'm unironically excited for this, even if it's terrible it's still gonna be be one of the most unique and experimental movies in recent memory. Like every single thing I see makes it sound even more bizarre in interesting way. I love the cast (except Corden, fuck that guy) and how earnestly they take this. I also love how much Taylor has developed as a dancer, I noticed it already during Rep tour, she was never as bad as twitter liked to pretend but she's genuinely pretty damn good these days. I don't know how any of this is gonna work but sign me the fuck up!
  15. There's rumours she's releasing a promo single this week so it's definitely possibility. If she does I wonder is it a song from her album unconnected to Cats or something she wrote for the movie👀. Maybe it's too early to release anything from the movie though
  16. It's coming! Finally! Can't wait to watch internet implode Confused but very intrigued (and slighty scared) how everyone involved with this film keep saying that "it's not cgi" like what is it going to be then if they're not wearing actual furry cat suits? What is this mystical non-cgi cgi? This is literally my most most awaited movie of the year after Endgame... I have no idea what to expect other than that betting against Taylor Swift is the music industry equivalent of betting against James Cameron and she will have the last laugh
  17. Hans Christian Anderson was Danish but many of his stories happen in the undetermined place and time. It's never really said where the original Anderson tale of The Little Mermaid takes place, it seems to be a fantasy setting that mixes various cultures and periods. There's a temple of unnamed religion but Prince gets married in a christian church, there are slaves in his kingdom, people are ethnically ambiguous etc. It's a very universal tale that could be transferred to pretty much any place. And yeah Caribbean setting would definitely be cool especially since the original disney movie already took a lot of influence from there.
  18. Anything over 20C (70F I think) is considered "hot" here I don't understand how y'all survive I would melt like a snowman if I was forced to live with those temperatures
  19. I hadn't heard of Halle Bailey before but in the clips I found she seems to have a lovely voice fitting for a disney princess and her features actually resemble animated Ariel somewhat (definitely more than all the girls like Bella Thorne who have been suggested for this role). Also as someone with naturally red hair this ~red head erasure~ and Hollywood supposedly hating redheads that some folks whine on internet is absolutely hilarious. Redheaded people may have faced oppression in the middle ages but not today. Nobody is going to deny a role from a white person just because they have red hair and it's probably the most admired hair color. That said I'd actually prefer for Ariel to have red hair because in my mind it belongs to the Disney version of the character. But you can easily dye it and and darker skin and red hair would actually look really unique and accentuate her otherwordly quality. I would also like to point out that the original Anderson story likely doesn't even take place in Denmark, IIRC there are descriptions of the temples and of warm climate and the people, including Prince, are described as black-haired and black-eyed (most north europeans having relatively fair hair and fair eyes). You could probably even make an argument that all the humans in the original story could be non-white, although the later adaptations of course made them into the default white option. All the studios ultimately only care about money and image and it is what it is but I don't give a shit about their motivations if it creates desperately needed representation and opportunities for the marginalized groups.
  20. Holy shit at Midsommar getting a C+ cinemascore tho, I was so sure it was going to get a F based on the script, it's a miracle. Now I'm worried it won't be weird and fucked up enough for me lol
