  1. Weekend Estimates (01/16-17):01 (01) ¥200,000,000 ($1.9 million), -33%, ¥36,145,000,000 ($345.7 million), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Toho/Aniplex) WK14 02 (02) ¥144,000,000 ($1.4 million), -50%, ¥805,000,000 ($7.8 million), Gintama: The Final (Warner Bros.) WK2 03 (04) ¥x91,000,000 ($875,000), -11%, ¥1,405,000,000 ($13.7 million), Poupelle of Chimney Town (Toho) WK4 04 (03) ¥x62,000,000 ($595,000), -41%, ¥3,570,000,000 ($33.5 million), New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms (Toho) WK6 05 (06) ¥x61,000,000 ($585,000), -18%, ¥1,635,000,000 ($15.8 million), The Promised Neverland (Toho) WK506 (---) ¥x55,000,000 ($530,000), 0, ¥x55,000,000 ($0.5 million), Natsume's Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and Strange Visitor (Aniplex) NEW 07 (05) ¥x53,000,000 ($510,000), -37%, ¥1,330,000,000 ($12.9 million), Pokemon: Coco (Toho) WK4 08 (09) ¥x23,000,000 ($220,000), -33%, ¥2,625,000,000 ($25.4 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 (Toho) WK8 09 (10) ¥x21,000,000 ($200,000), -27%, ¥260,000,000 ($2.5 million), Peninsula (Gaga) WK3 10 (07) ¥x20,000,000 ($190,000), -47%, ¥105,000,000 ($1.0 million), Sailor Moon Eternal - Part 1 (Toei) WK2There are now 11 prefectures under the state of emergency restrictions, and theaters have agreed to them and are closing early (at 8PM), meaning the last showing of the day has to begin at 5/6PM. These 11 prefectures account for a vast majority, easily in the 85% territory, of the entire box office, so the evening/night business will be increasingly weak for the next 3 weeks. However, despite this, everything still performed quite well, and these drops are easily on par with most middle weekends in January, and even better than the average weekend this time of year (in terms of holds). >Demon Slayer: Mugen Train continues its reign atop the box office (even taking back #1 in admissions this weekend), having achieved its 14th-consecutive weekend at #1 now. And after 14 weeks, it has now earned about ¥5 billion (enough to be considered a blockbuster in the market) more than Spirited Away. Even after all this time, it's a mind-boggling achievement. Look for a finish near ¥38 billion (~$365 million) with nearly 28 million admissions, but don't be surprised if it has some event announced over the Demon Slayer Festival on Feb. 13-14 that could change things. >Gintama: The Final experienced a large 50% decline, but not too surprising given the giveaway event over its first weekend/week of release. It also has a couple events happening over the next two weeks. Beginning Jan. 22nd, moviegoers can download an app to listen to commentary from the cast during special showings. And beginning on Jan. 29th, moviegoers can receive a limited-print double-sided poster (in collaboration with Demon Slayer again). So it should have a pretty good run over the next several weeks, and I believe it still has a good shot at reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million). Excluding the two live-action films, it needs to surpass Gintama: The Final Chapter's ¥1.7 billion total to become the highest grossing animated film in the franchise. >Poupelle of Chimney Town enjoyed the best hold in the Top 10, and it was a pretty stellar hold at that. It's going to be more of crawl-type of performance, but if it continues like this for awhile, it could eventually reach ¥2 billion (~$20 million). >Fourth through seventh place this weekend is very, very contested. At the usual locations, barely 2,000 admissions separate all four films. Natsume's Book of Friends: The Waking Rock and the Strange Visitor is a limited release, only playing in 65 theaters, so it's probably at a disadvantage in terms of admissions, but most Aniplex releases have higher ticket prices via events and special ticket pricing and such, so it could have debuted above the three holdovers. >The Promised Neverland is apart of that four-way battle for 4th-7th place talked about above, but I'm giving it a special mention here due to its excellent sub-20% hold. This may have been a result of its primary audience not having a chance to see it over the weekdays since theaters are closing earlier, thus not really giving students/workers a chance to see films on the weekdays right now, but it's great nonetheless, especially if the upcoming weekdays are at least decent. ¥2 billion (~$20 million) is still an uphill battle, but it's keeping its chances alive with its hold this weekend.
  2. It seems there are some early screenings on 22th, 23th Jan, but yeah.... just some, not much.
  3. Is this normal? Where can I check the presale? Thank you.
  4. It started from 9th Jan Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba were put under a state of emergency that went into effect today (Saturday for theaters) and will last until February 7th. These four prefectures account for the vast majority of the box office, somewhere in the 75/80% territory of business. What does this mean for theaters in these prefectures? Beginning on Saturday:-Theaters have been requested to close by 8PM. So depending on the runtime of a film, the last showings will begin so they don't run past this deadline. Therefore the last showings will begin at/or before 6PM or earlier in most cases.-Theaters are no longer allowing reserved ticket sales until 8-hours in advance. So advance ticket sales are going to be much, much lower than normal.-Theaters have been requested to resume 50% capacity, which they had been operating on before this past September/October. This isn't a particularly challenging restriction for a film's performance, but opening weekends will be more limited in what they can do especially now with the shortened business hours. The State of Emergency is going to expand to 7 more prefectures, so more theaters will be closing early at 8PM each day while also resuming 50% capacity. The 50% capacity isn't much of a concern for the box office, but the last showings beginning at 5/6PM in order to finish before 8PM will continue to deflate the numbers while in effect since students and working people don't really have a chance to go during the weekdays with this measure. The measures are currently in place until Feb. 7th.
  5. It seems Demon Slayer has a debut day in SK on 27th Jan? Any confirmation about this?
  6. Weekend Actuals (01/02-03):01 (01) ¥677,783,450 ($6.6 million), -25%, ¥34,642,166,000 ($331.3 million), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Toho/Aniplex) WK12 02 (02) ¥257,900,150 ($2.5 million), -02%, ¥3,058,528,950 ($29.6 million), New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms (Toho) WK4 03 (04) ¥164,744,300 ($1.6 million), -20%, ¥875,795,200 ($8.5 million), Poupelle of Chimney Town (Toho) WK2 04 (02) ¥138,645,250 ($1.3 million), -50%, ¥944,766,800 ($9.2 million), Pokemon: Coco (Toho) WK2 05 (05) ¥131,183,300 ($1.3 million), -26%, ¥1,258,677,650 ($12.2 million), The Promised Neverland (Toho) WK3 06 (06) ¥x85,842,350 ($833,000), +14%, ¥2,433,882,750 ($23.6 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 (Toho) WK707 (---) ¥x65,000,000 ($630,000), 0, ¥105,000,000 ($1.0 million), Peninsula (Gaga) NEW 08 (07) ¥x31,424,500 ($305,000), -43%, ¥1,702,438,200 ($16.3 million), Takizawa Kabuki Zero 2020: The Movie (Shochiku) WK5 09 (08) ¥x30,425,970 ($295,000), -43%, ¥451,945,480 ($4.4 million), Wonder Woman 1984 (Warner Bros.) WK3 10 (11) ¥x24,566,340 ($238,000), -11%, ¥514,318,550 ($4.9 million), Tengaramon (Giggly Box) WK4Strong weekend to kick-off 2021! Still awaiting the actual for Peninsula, but including its estimate, this weekend is 1% higher than 2020, and 8% higher than 2019. It's also the biggest first weekend of January since 2016. >Demon Slayer: Mugen Train earned its 12th-consecutive weekend atop the box office, and delivered a great hold coming off of its unprecedented 133% increase last weekend to achieve the second biggest twelfth-weekend ever. Its cumulative admissions reached 25,484,681. As mentioned, it has claimed practically all the records besides those it'll be vying for on the longevity charts, such as most weeks in the Top 5/10 and such. Expect a finish somewhere around the ¥40 billion ($380 million+) mark and 30 million admissions. >New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms enjoyed a strong fourth weekend, and was able to exceed the ¥3 billion milestone on Sunday, and has sold an impressive 2.27 million admissions so far. The film will likely exceed the ¥4 billion (~$40 million) mark and finish with about 3 million admissions. For the new members who aren't very familiar with the Japan box office, this projected finish would (and likely will) be enough to be a Top 10 contender on the yearly charts. >Poupelle of Chimney Town enjoyed a great hold in its sophomore frame, and has a pretty good shot at reaching the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone. I know the film is based on a successful novel, and has a fanbase from that, but this will be a very solid result for an animated film not based on, or adapted from, an existing anime, manga, or established studio/director. >Pokemon: Coco suffered from the typical ~50% decline the franchise always experiences, despite its lower opening weekend. Since it was delayed from its July release date due to COVID (the films have always opened in July), it's unlikely to have the legs of its many predecessors due to the lack of Summer Vacation occurring over its first six weeks like in the past. It will unfortunately become the lowest grossing Pokemon film, likely failing to reach the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone. But given that families have been almost the sole demographic that's largely been avoiding theaters, and every other younger-skewing film has disappointed post-COVID so far, this was result was mostly expected. >The Promised Neverland held well over its third weekend, and keeps its chances of reaching the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone pretty high. Most live-action Shonen adaptations stall out in the ¥1-1.5 billion range, so this one's going to outperform many of them. The manga series concluded in 2020, and Season 2 of the anime is debuting later this month.Peninsula had a decent debut, in my opinion, as it wasn't likely to be another Parasite or anything. It looks much more gory and violent for a horror film versus the more appealing ones that center around the suspense or thriller genres instead.

  8. Weekend Estimates (01/02-03):01 (01) ¥617,000,000 ($6.0 million), -32%, ¥34,545,000,000 ($330.4 million), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Toho/Aniplex) WK12 02 (02) ¥265,000,000 ($2.6 million), +01%, ¥3,055,000,000 ($29.5 million), New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms (Toho) WK4 03 (04) ¥157,000,000 ($1.5 million), -24%, ¥870,000,000 ($8.4 million), Poupelle of Chimney Town (Toho) WK2 04 (05) ¥128,000,000 ($1.2 million), -27%, ¥1,270,000,000 ($12.3 million), The Promised Neverland (Toho) WK3 05 (02) ¥124,000,000 ($1.2 million), -55%, ¥950,000,000 ($9.2 million), Pokemon: Coco (Toho) WK2 06 (06) ¥x86,000,000 ($835,000), +14%, ¥2,435,000,000 ($23.6 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 (Toho) WK707 (---) ¥x65,000,000 ($630,000), 0, ¥105,000,000 ($1.0 million), Peninsula (Gaga) NEW 08 (07) ¥x30,000,000 ($290,000), -45%, ¥1,700,0000,000 ($16.3 million), Takizawa Kabuki Zero 2020: The Movie (Shochiku) WK5 09 (08) ¥x29,000,000 ($280,000), -43%, ¥465,000,000 ($4.5 million), Wonder Woman 1984 (Warner Bros.) WK3 10 (11) ¥x23,000,000 ($223,000), -15%, ¥500,000,000 ($4.8 million), Tengaramon (Giggly Box) WK4 11 (09) ¥x22,000,000 ($215,000), -51%, ¥365,000,000 ($3.5 million), Kamen Rider Zero-One: REAL x TIME (Toei) WK3A bit of a subdued New Year's Weekend in terms of increases/decreases, but based on these estimates, this weekend is still only down 4% versus 2020, and actually up 3% versus 2019, and that's with almost no Hollywood support. New Year's Weekend is one where more adult-driven films thrive, and there weren't really any films to benefit much from the adults being on holiday this year.Demon Slayer: Mugen Train earned its 12th-consecutive weekend atop the box office, and delivered a great hold coming off of its unprecedented 133% increase last weekend to achieve the second biggest twelfth-weekend ever, even holding better than two of the previous post-giveaway weekends (and this weekend is up almost 60% compared to its 10th weekend). As mentioned, it has claimed practically all the records besides those it'll be vying for on the longevity charts, such as most weeks in the Top 5/10 and such. There's been some debate on where it could be heading, but it's still a bit early to project an accurate figure, but I believe we can expect it to either approach or just exceed ¥40 billion ($380 million+) based on what we know at the moment.New Interpretation Records of the Three Kingdoms was one of the films to benefit from the New Year's Weekend, due to appealing more toward adults, remaining flat with last weekend. It has performed well since its great opening weekend, and is still on track to exceed the ¥4 billion (~$40 million) milestone.Poupelle of Chimney Town enjoyed a good hold in its sophomore frame, and keeps it chances of reaching ¥2 billion (~$20 million) alive and well. The Promised Neverland held a lot better than early numbers suggested on Saturday, and winded up with a pretty solid third weekend. A ¥2 billion (~$20 million) total isn't locked, but it remains likely. Most live-action Shonen adaptations stall out in the ¥1-1.5 billion range, so this one's going to outperform many of them.Pokemon: Coco couldn't avoid the typical harsh second weekend drop the franchise experiences, and actually had one of the bigger second weekend declines in the long-running series. Pokemon's popularity has been on the decline over the better part of the last decade (fewer and fewer children in the country), especially the film franchise and anime series', so this is probably pretty expected. And, since it's appeal is almost exclusively towards families/children, the hardest hit demographic from COVID, it's likely suffering from those groups avoiding theaters like they have for every other younger-skewing film.Peninsula had a decent debut, in my opinion, as it wasn't likely to be another Parasite or anything. It looks much more gory and violent for a horror film versus the more appealing ones that center around the suspense or thriller genres instead.

And while that's amazingly impressive, the biggest record of all will fall this weekend. In fact, it already has if you count the presales heading into Saturday. And that record is...DEMON SLAYER WILL BECOME THE HIGHEST GROSSING FILM OF ALL TIME THIS WEEKEND, AFTER SATURDAY, SURPASSING SPIRITED AWAY! It would have surpassed Spirited Away LAST weekend, but Toho added the re-release gross that Spirited Away achieved over this past Summer at the last moment, delaying its record being broken by one more week. This is a special moment, one that will almost certainly never happen again in our lifetimes. Now onto the other films this weekend...Pokemon: Coco is probably going to have a somewhat deflated weekend, as most (just about all) younger-skewing/family films have had this year due to COVID. They're pretty much the ONLY films being negatively impacted. Families are the most cautious moviegoers right now, so it's understandable. This is also the FIRST Pokemon film to ever debut outside of July, after being delayed this year due to the pandemic. So it won't be able to enjoy the six/seven-weeks of Summer Vacation the series has always benefitted from over the past 22 years. That said, it still has three good weeks ahead of it to make up for a subdued opening, so a respectable gross of at least ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million) should be doable, but maybe it can aim for ¥3 billion (~$30 million), which has become the franchise goal in recent years.Poupelle of Chimney Town. I haven't looked into this film much, but it did a lot better than I was personally expecting it to on Friday. Its Saturday reservations are a bit low in comparison, but it may also not be much of a reservation-type of film. This one may be one of the more interesting films to watch this weekend, and over the holiday period. I'm not going to type an analysis out for everything in the Weekend Forecast, but will say that just about everything in release right now is doing well. Wonder Woman 1984 and Kamen Rider are struggling, and Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 is doing way less than the original film (but it will boost its current total a lot over the next two/three weeks), but I don't think anyone was expecting the box-office to have recovered as well as it has over the past several months for us to enjoy a New Year box office this good.
