If it wasn't for that obscenely high budget, I'd say this has a chance of being a breakout hit.

I'm legit shocked this ended up making less than Moribus. Holy shit.
This sequel being Shazam vs Black Adam instead would have been a million times more interesting, but Rock's ego ended up killing that.
The upcoming reboot also deflated any interest for this.
The reboot announcement didn't help, but I get the feeling that this would have tanked either way. After the failure of Black Adam and how rudderless the DCEU has been.
If anything, this is further proof that Gunn and Safran need to hit the reset button.

no surprise. The first one was considered all right by audiences but nothing amazing so no one was counting down to the sequel (critics and some fans massively overpraised it because it went against the Snyder tone) but this sequel came out four years later and with absolute cringe trailers (I've seen all the Fast and Furious movies?? Seriously??)
Yeah...
I expected it to make less than the first. But this is even worse than I could have imagined.

Example of fresh blood needed in the MCU: Destin Daniel Cretton.

It might be my most anticipated movie not already in production next to Secret Wars.
Also, the MCU needs the Russo Bros. and Markus and McFeely back. Nevermind that their output outside the MCU is questionable with their Netflix joints. The power vacuum with James Gunn going to form DC Studios with Pete Safran is just too big. Also maybe bring back Jon Favreau back to the fold.
Kinda. The MCU needs talented writers and fresh blood if it wants to remain in play and in favor for audiences.

This movie will depend entirely on WOM. So if this gets anything less than stellar reviews it will flop.
That was always the case, tbh. That's what ultimately sunk Lightyear.

Less than half of what the first made. Just embarrassing altogether.

Wouldn't be surprised if it opens below Transformers. There isn't interest for original animation post-pandemic besides Disney Princesses. Also the animation looks cheaper than usual for Pixar.
Releasing it right after Spider-Verse is a big ???
And alongside Flash???
1. Transformers isn't tracking so well. That movie has to contend with the other blockbusters it's wedged in between.
2. The one advantage this has is that it'll be the option for families. Spider-Verse is family friendly, but this is more of an all-ages option.
3. The Flash is targeting a separate demographic altogether. If Inside Out can do well alongside Jurassic World, I don't see why this can't, either.

Most people will go away from Cannes before Elemental premiere
I hope there’s screenings in LA and NY as well so there will be a splash of reviews instead of only a couple that manages to be in the festival
We'll see, I guess.

I guess, would prefer Pixar movies not be the news for bad reasons though. Such an oof from the marketing department that would've been quite clever without the unforced error of a fake extinguisher graphic.
I really don't expect this to cause a major stir or turn people off en masse.

I expect that they'll make some kind of announcement about the tickets this week.

I don’t wanna jinx it,but there’s a possibility that this could get a pg-13,being that they didn’t announce the rating yet.
Doubtful. If the first got a PG, I don't see why this wouldn't.

I trust Gunn to cast the roles well.

Strange world was awful imho. That said this one looks terrible as well.
But it is a dreamworks film and I doubt it's even on their upper end of budgets. I think this is probably like a 60-65M budget film. So bombing like strange world is out of the question but I don't expect a hit either.
Yep. Trolls 3 or Kung-Fu Panda 4 will help them bounce right back.

STRANGE WORLD was a good movie. 🙂 This one looks horrible.
Would not be surprised if this tanks.

If audience enthusiasm isn't that high for Elemental, it's not going to maintain interest when the next animated movie releases
Ok Ruby may not be Mario but it's not Oogieloves either. DreamWorks' last movie did a heck of a lot better than Pixar's, I don't think it should be dismissed as a factor.
True. Puss in Boots had better word of mouth and was part of an established franchise. Lightyear was too confusing of a premise for audiences and had tepid word of mouth.
But, weirdly? Ruby Gillman marketing has been radio silent since March.

I would've agreed w that if it weren't for Ruby, which is why that movie annoys me.
Ruby's presence at least would just about seal this movie's fate if it is in fact mediocre. Gotta say I would be pretty pessimistic right now if it weren't for the Cannes announcement. They still really haven't shown off much footage that would suggest their usual depth and the lack of general enthusiasm for it save for the few people in this thread is hard to shake off. I don't know if an enthusiastic critical reception can surmount all that, wish they'd give us a little more.
I don't think Ruby will have any major effect. If the WOM is there, Elemental should do just fine. Unless Ruby Gillman is "Puss in Boots" good, I don't see it overthrowing Elemental as the go-to for families.

The one thing that might save this is the fact that it's basically the only option for families in late June/mid July.
Yes, that's two weeks after Spider-Verse, but I'd consider that more of a "family friendly" movie. Whereas Elemental is catered towards younger or general all ages.

I did see a TV spot last night watching hockey. For better or worse, they're locked into June 16 now.
They claimed the date first and that's typically when Pixar films open up, anyways.

This feels like another Turbo or Strange World in the making.
