I'm now convinced Sneider isn't an actual "insider" but a paid PR hitman who works to talk down other studio's movies. Wasn't he the guy who said there was no way Dune 2 would actually make money?

I agree that he's an asshat, but the movie simply being bad isn't impossible. These movie directors are human too, and can slip up and make mistakes once in a while. That's just as possible as Zaslav, a glorified reality TV executive, not understanding a weird genre movie and automatically assuming the worst as far as revenue is concerned.

Apparently Todd Phillips clarified at the panel last night that it’s not a full musical, but music is an “essential element”. I can probably get on board with that.

That sounds more like a half-baked assurance towards the exhibitors in the audience to me, especially in light of them being burned out by pretty much every musical this decade either underperforming or outright bombing. I'm still going in expecting a full musical.

I mean, whether it's good or bad, whether people love it or hate it, whether the musical elements are only in support of the movie or the whole thing, whether it collapsed after its OW... Those are all valid questions. But undoubtedly the buzz is there. This is gonna open much higher than the first.

For sure. Especially since Godzilla x Kong defied its used-up novelty factor to score a big opening two weekends ago. This is going to open huge. Its staying power, and thus chance to take the crown for the year and give me my third victorious club. will all depend on how the crowds perceive it on its opening weekend.

Speaking of that club, this first look as as good a time as any to plug it once again. Join now if you have as much faith in this movie as I:

  3. Our world is simply far more volatile and angry than it was back when the first movie was released. And that already had a lot of people riled up back then, with fears of incel shootings and what have you. So YouTube is, very understandably, not taking any chances this time. Especially with this one coming out the month before the American election. This will likely not be the last trigger warning attached to this movie.

If Mickey 17 is there I definitely think it's possible Marvel brings Cap 4 with Deadpool. It's not like it can go next year.

Disney has both D23 and possibly Comic-Con to contend with, so I wouldn't count on anything beyond a panel-exclusive clip for Deadpool 3. Minecraft will also be out before next year's CinemaCon, and yet Warner still decided not to show anything from it at all beyond a quick "we're working on it" mention.

  5. So I just caught up with Warner's showing, and I'm not going to lie, that was a lot lighter and non-eventful than I was expecting. The only major tidbit was, of course, the excellent Joker 2 trailer. Superman and Minecraft got tiny "we're working on it" nods, and the rest was exclusive footage we won't see anyway. I feel pretty underwhelmed. If this sets the stage for the rest of the panels, then we have a pretty lukewarm week ahead of us. At least I know better than to expect any major Sonic 3 news now.

Those are some crazy drops for Monday. What would be the reason exactly? Easter Monday really that big of an impact?

That's exactly what it is. As we've said before, a ton of people had last Monday off, and numbers were highly inflated then as a result. Now they're coming down to Earth. That's the gamble when opening on holiday frames.

I remember right after Sonic 2 came out that someone from the studio was teasing a big name for Shadow for the third movie that they were working on. They were really making it seem like a big deal. My impression at the time was that they talked about it like it was an A list celebrity type of thing. But it's been radio silence since that point.

It was especially weird since voice roles barely move the needle for audience interest these days. Almost every big name has taken a random animated role. The only person that I could see Paramount land that would legitimately be someone that makes headlines is Tom Cruise, and I don't think he'd take it on.

And isn't he with Warner now anyway? I have a feeling that he did not take Dead Reckoning's underperformance very well. Anyway, the Shadow voice hype seems more targeted towards the core Sonic fans than anything. The movie otherwise shouldn't be a difficult sell as long as it's on par with the previous ones.

Also, @Morieris, that rumour you mentioned is unfortunately not a new revelation, and has been circulating for months without a real source. And Campea sounded like he was simply speculating. I don't think he knows anything there. I'd temper expectations and not expect anything more than a quick exclusive preview for the attendees if I were you, as the movie just wrapped filming, and there is a big outside party in Sega who likely will want to wait until either Sonic's 33rd anniversary in June or Comic-Con in July to start marketing it.

Anyway, a quick Joker 2 preview just dropped, announcing the full trailer for 6:30 PM PT, after Warner's panel tonight:

Campea mentioned it. Like I said, he's the only one who mentioned it (but I do not hang around Sonic movie rumor sites except Twitter and here, maybe someone else did), but he's been right sometimes in the past, so grain of salt.

    Alright, thanks! I'll check later.

Anyway, the panels begin today with Warner's at 4 PM PT, in 10 hours and 3 minutes from now. Unfortunately that's 2 AM for me so I most likely won't be able to follow it.

Tbh, I thought this film would peak at $140m-$150m.

I didn't think it would outright bomb as we got closer, but claw its way to a profit (or break even at worst). This was before the budget was revealed and weeks before release.

It's crazy how well it's doing. A lot of people weren't giving this a chance. The ones who kept the faith absolutely should be praised.

I was confident in it from the start. I think people are really underestimating how good Minus One was for the franchise. Yeah, the fans are up in arms about all the unfair critical comparisons. but that movie brought Godzilla back into the spotlight in a big way. And that's not even counting the restored goodwill the first Kong crossover brought upon the character. The trailers have also performed consistently well on YouTube and the like.

I heard a rumor of who might voice Shadow and they might be announced on Thursday.

I won't say the source is questionable because they have been right, but they're the only one saying it, buuuut it would kind of tie in with some re releases happening. We shall see!

I know that's a large cocktease about information but I want to wait and see if they're right.

Also apparently Universal has two panels! How about that.

Where did you hear this rumour, may I ask? I just did a quick cursory search and couldn't find anything new.

Some advice this board should hear frankly

I don't know, the increasingly sloppy output of his studio these past couple of years isn't helping him at all. Betting against him isn't too unreasonable right now. But he could regain the lost trust over the rest of the decade if he makes the right decisions, so we'll see.

As for Robert, this pretty much guarantees that Marvel will at least try to get him back for Secret Wars. Maybe we can get that Superior Iron Man appearance that was widely rumoured for Strange 2 back in the day..

  12. So, out of nowhere a big Daredevil bombshell just surfaced. I'll hide it with the spoiler tag just in case:

    Spoiler

Ayelet Zurer, the original actress for Wilson Fisk's lover Vanessa, has seemingly been added back into the series with the rework. During the original version's making, she was not available, thus the choice to recast with Sandrine Holt. One way or the other, Zurer is evidently now available, so here we are.

I have to admit, Marvel's sheer commitment to course correcting here is impressive. While most of the footage from the original version being kept is keeping my optimism tempered, said optimism is very much alive. I just hope the final series isn't a Frankensteinian abomination outside of the new Benson and Moorhead+Scardapane wraparound episodes at this point.

So there will not even be a studio presentation until Tuesday with WB because Sony normally opens on Monday but they are not going this year. Funny though they are debuting the trailer for Fly Me To The Moon the Scar  Jo/Tatum movie tomorrow online.

Even funnier is that there's a poster for Garfield up on the showfloor despite its distributor, Sony, not going. Then again, it is an Alcon production, so I guess they decided to put it there.

    First Trailer of Gladiator 2

New Trailer of Quiet Place : Day One

    First look of Smile 2

    First trailer of Transformers One

    Disney :

Just maybe a trailer of Mufasa and/or Moana 2

There's also an outside shot of the Minecraft movie and Mission Impossible 8 being shown in some form, as while neither of them have finished production yet, they both have been filming for a bit. Justice League was in a similar position back in 2016, and Warner did show footage of that at that year's Comic-Con despite the movie being a 16 months away.

I FINALLY got to see GxK and i unsurprisingly loved it!

This is the movie where the MonsterVerse finally abandons all ties it its realistic roots (yes, GvK was somehow a bit more "grounded" than this one) and goes full Showa-ish fantasy bullshit that is really fun in my opinion. They fully comitted to this route and i can very much respect that.

What really suprised me was Kong and how good he functions as a protagonist. Godzilla is a glorified grumpy buddy but it works, especially towards the end. The fights are phenomenal in their stupidity. The humans were tolerable, Dan Stevens was the clear highlight.

Overall, id say this is the same level as GvK for me but for a bit different reasons. Cant wait to watch it again and cant wait to watch it after drinking a bit of good old german beer.

    9/10, masterpiece.

I was just wondering if you'd seen the movie or not. I actually preferred this to the last one, which I loved too. But the last movie had a messy, uneven story that was clearly heavily reedited after how poorly King of the Monsters fared. This one flows a lot better, and has a more consistent, even tone than the last one. There's also so much great visual storytelling here, with long stretches of setpieces without any dialogue or actual actors at all. And yet you can tell exactly what story is being told in them. That's what makes this one especially good to me. Skull Island has finally been topped for me, and this is now my new favourite. Onward to more movies!

If TFOne is getting delayed, it's possible it may be because Paramount is in such dire straits they can't actually market their movies until a buyout occurs.

Seeing as they're seemingly kicking off the marketing for Gladiator 2 next week despite it being due for a month after TFOne, I don't think matters are that bad yet. But I do think that these merger plans might cause them to decide to push off some of their less appealing movies far enough that they'll be in the hands of the next regime by the time they're finally out so that the current one can save marketing money, akin to what Fox did with their leftover X-Men movies before Disney came in.

I am wondering about TFOne, I assume if we don't hear anything about that by IF it's getting delayed.

I wouldn't complain, need open market for Wild Robot

I wouldn't be surprised if they're running into trouble deciding how to sell it after how Rise of the Beasts underperformed last year. Their similar Turtles relaunch was marred by the stench of its own big budget precursor, and that one was after a 7-year hiatus, while One is due for just a little over a year after Beasts. For now, unless we hear about it at CinemaCon this coming week, I highly doubt it'll make it to its September date. I'll be surprised if it's out any earlier than next summer.

I'll also lower my expectations considerably for Fall Guy after how Monkey Man just utterly collapsed. Even $300M worldwide seems like a stretch to me for that one, but we'll see.

It sucks that GxK isn't going to finish above Godzilla 2014. After all the hoopla from it's opening weekend. I wanted another movie above 200M DOM, boo!

I hate that that snoozefest of a movie will always remain the biggest one just based on the novelty factor alone. They finally got it right with these Kong crossovers, and they should be rewarded with new franchise highs for it. I just hope it at least takes the worldwide throne at this point.

  18. Also, Godzilla x Kong has toppled Skull Island and is now my new favourite of this franchise. It does almost everything right, and gave me everything I ever wanted out of such a movie. You can definitely tell that they didn't have to edit it down to the bare essentials this time like they did for the last movie, as it feels like a more well-rounded, robust story than that. And the movie greatly benefits from that. As my first Godzilla experience on the big screen in almost half a decade, it did not disappoint!

Marvel going back to mostly white cast again seems interesting

I'm going to assume the choice to make the traditional Surfer's wife into the Surfer might just be to add some diversity to the cast, since the Fantastic Four is kind of a sausage fest. I don't think that has anything to do with Pedro being Reed though. That choice is likely because he is a popular and highly capable leading man who can pull off a fatherly aura effortlessly whenever they decide to bring the Richards kids in.

As for this Surfer choice, while I am perfectly willing to go in with an open mind, I am pretty disappointed we're not getting Norrin Radd, as I feel the character has never been done true justice on film so far. Making his lover the Surfer instead comes across as weird to me, especially since apparently she was only ever in the role in one panel in an alternate universe story.

Granted, the movie is all but confirmed to take place outside of the proper Marvel universe, and that Surfer mention could just be speculation on Deadline's end. But if she is actually the Surfer and gets all the elements associated with that, then that'd make Norrin a lot less special, and it'd probably make a lot more sense to just make Garner the main Surfer of the MCU to avoid audience confusion. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

On a side note, this is a decent indication that Mila Kunis really was considered for The Thing at some point. I also wouldn't be surprised if they give Wolverine the similar treatment and start off with his daughter Laura instead, in order to differentiate and distance themselves from the overwhelming presence of Hugh Jackman's Logan.
