Where the fuck would he have fit into this plot that is set before he was born

I'm just as clueless as you are. Again, this was probably just made for fun by the artist, or perhaps Spidey here is a placeholder for one of the main girls, presumably from a more action-oriented version of the movie. But knowing Sony, I wouldn't put it past them at all to try and cram Spidey into this somehow.

Why is the internet/twitter/youtube not up in arms about how badly this new Ghostbusters is doing compared to the 2016 film?

    It’s all very convenient

Anyway, as a huge fan of only the 2016 film, it’s extremely satisfying that less people have seen both Afterlife and this. Justice IMO lol.

The reason is pretty clear to me: the big controversy surrounding that reboot drew the attention of a lot of casuals who otherwise don't have much investment in Ghostbusters as a franchise. Without it, the franchise only has its rapidly aging core fans to rely on. They could've expanded it like Radio Silence did for Scream if Sony had the imagination to, but as we've seen with Afterlife, they simply don't. And that is costing them big time with Frozen Empire. It's pretty fitting that it's getting destroyed by Godzilla, a property that is able to regularly reinvent itself and open up to even more audiences each time, and Toho and Legendary are both being rewarded for it with Minus One and now The New Empire overperforming in big ways.

Here's the thing...that's probably going to be a disaster. There's a reason Kong works as a protagonist - it's an ape. Giant, yes, but especially within the context of huge chunks of the runtime without any humans, that size is almost irrelevant. It's a very human performance. It's the same reason the new Planet of the Apes movies work so well. You can do a lot of actual emotion and non-verbal communication and expression with such a character. With Godzilla, it's not going to work.

Which means that "by delving deeper into the character", they're gonna end up having to rely a lot on some human characters doing the heavy-lifting. And they've clearly been unable to do good human characters in this series. I think that's a direction that might end up putting the breaks on the series again. It's Kong, not Godzilla that's carrying this franchise.

Why not? The Mandalorian managed to make its lead, covered in a helmet for 95% of the running time, display a surprising amount of emotion. Who's to say Goji can't show any emotions? His expressions notably soften and become a lot more relaxed whenever Mothra is around, for example. He even straight up laughs with a shit-eating grin in Godzilla vs Kong. Making him an actual character would be such a fascinating challenge, and represents the kind of risk Hollywood should be taking more of in an era where franchise fatigue is more potent than ever.

Wonder which next Kaiju villain you want either Kong or Godzilla to go up against in future Monsterverse movies, whether it be original ones exclusive to this franchise or using one or more of Toho’s monsters? Since the previous monster antagonists were pretty dangerous threats to each title character. 🤔

“Godzilla (2014)” had the two MUTO’s, “Kong: Skull Island” had that one huge Skullcrawler, “King of the Monsters” had King Ghidorah and then the previous film “GvK” had MechaGodzilla. Usually the evil monsters are the biggest threats in these films.

I think Behemoth, the mammoth-looking character briefly seen in King of the Monsters, would be a great match for Kong. As for Goji, I'd like to see either Gigan, Hedorah or Biollante as potential new opponents, with maybe Anguirus as a secondary foe like Rodan was. Ideally I'd want a King of the Monsters do-over that features the big Toho characters in an actually good movie, but Ghidorah being obliterated and his final remains being probably destroyed along with MechaGodzilla puts a big wrench into that. I guess they can do MechaGhidorah, but the studio might think that'd be too derivative.

  5. If you would've told me 5 years ago when King of the Monsters was flopping that the franchise would miraculously recover completely from that and find a brand new lease on life, I wouldn't have believed you in the slightest. And yet here we are, with the biggest opening for the series in a decade, 5 years after a movie that should've killed Goji in America for at least a decade. I guess now we know the path DC would've taken had Justice League been a great movie that was a smash hit.

Hopefully we finally get a proper Godzilla 3 out of this. If Minus One's overperformance didn't convince them, then this one most certainly should. Adam Wingard did indicate recently that the next movie will delve into Goji's character the same way this one apparently explores Kong's. So I hope we see that story told.

I can't wait to see this movie next weekend when it's out in my homeland! I really wanted to see it day and date with you all, but our distributor delayed it to avoid Ramadan as much as possible, as it hita moviegoing pretty hard here. All the impressions are leaving me more and more impatient by the day!

Wowie zowie, that is crazy. I had absolutely no clue. Truly. I was for sure not intentionally ignoring a fact I already know to find an excuse to thirst for Timothee yet again. Thank you so much for the help, chief.

That text in the bottom right was the first time in ages I was reminded that this guy was a cannibal once. It's almost as crazy of a time as the one where he made love with a peach...

Honestly, it's a little surprising GxK OW will likely be under 80M.

People were expecting more after Friday.

It is Easter, so it makes sense why its Saturday and Sunday drops would be steeper than usual. Most of the business is shifted to the preceding Friday, as most people spend the remainder with their loved ones as one does during any given holiday.

Canadians love Timothee. After all, he is super fluent in French.

What I would give to have this man speak beautiful (or dirty 👀) to me in French. Won't understand a word he's saying, but he's so....so sexy when he speaks French. 😍

I think it's moreso that they love Denis. But Timothee has shown himself to be a sufficient draw these past few months, with both Wonka and Dune 2 combined likely reaching a billion.

    ~$26.25M SAT. ~$63M 2-days.

$80M need 35% drop on SUN.

    Mario dropped 39.3%
    Fantastic Beasts 40%
    GvK 45%

Missing the $80M threshold is a shameI know Warner will probably report the weekend at that, but it'll most certainly drop with actuals, but $78M-$79M or so is still a terrific number. I wonder how well it would've played in its original mid-April window. Either way, with April being free of any major blockbusters as well as word of mouth being great, this should have staying power on paper. Onward to the second weekend, as that'll determine if this surpasses the 2014 reboot to become the biggest movie in the franchise, at least domestically.

I would actually argue that with GxK and Minus One, were witnessing the most popular Godzilla has been - probably ever.

We definitely underestimated how much Godzilla vs Kong rejuvenated the brand. It was on the brink after how poorly King of the Monsters performed, to the point where the former got pushed back by almost 9 months. I wonder how everything would've played out had the plague never happened.

I can only speak for myself, but KOTM seemed like a complete misstep due to a complete mishandling of tones and a general lack of identity. Following the serious, at times plodding (due to the shit human characters), Godzilla-lite 2014 movie and then the absolute blast that Skull Island was, KOTM seemed to not mesh the two well or even decide on a specific track to follow. You have this HUGE sci-fi leap with the Monarch flying fortress whatever, and hollow earth, and Atlantis (?) but then you tack on overwrought human drama again and slap it all across the face with a muted aesthetic and it's just such a head-scratcher.

I hate King of the Monsters too. It's utterly pretentious drivel, made by people who don't understand the themes they're trying to present. The infuriating thing is, the kaiju themselves are fantastic, and all have distinct and memorable personalities, but even they are marred by the overwhelming weather effects and the surrounding story being atrocious.

  11. The tone of this thread feels wildly different to the one for King of the Monsters 5 years ago, where the steep decline of the projections with each passing day was a gut punch to the Goji fans in the site, to the point where some of them even quit the forums altogether for a while. I have a hunch they'll be feeling a lot differently this weekend.

I also wonder where we'd be had Godzilla vs Kong not already started filming, or not been in the can by the time King of the Monsters failed.

I mean it still did well above the mid-30s most here expected, and the focus on the original cast as the main hook was arguably a detriment. The audience who would care don’t go to the theaters anymore, and Afterlife emphasized the new cast and Stranger Things vibes to bring in new, younger crowds. I doubt a third movie would do well, but this is fine enough imo.

That factor is especially going to bite Scream 7 hard when it eventually is released. The big reason why Radio Silence was able to rejuvenate the franchise was because their new characters connected deeply with today's youth, and convinced them to go see a movie they otherwise might not have. Now both of the big ones are gone, and they're going back to heavily relying and focusing on the original cast, which did not help Scream 4 at all. At this point I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this new one does even worse than that

Nah, i can only support the film in Germany. I dont have the money to buy plane tickets just to fly to the US to see it there 😶

Let me guess, they delayed it there too? It was delayed here to the 5th because releasing a big movie during Ramadan in a majority-Muslim nation is financial suicide, as seen by Mario actually performing less than Sonic 2 here, despite tripling it worldwide.

King of the Monsters had the issue of being largely rejected unseen by the casuals as a result of the stench of the 2014 movie and the poor reviews, so only the diehard fans showed up, hence the aforementioned low internal multiplier and the steep second weekend drop. It'll definitely be a nailbiter to see if the casuals actually show up for this one.
