    This isn't moving.

Sonic 3 with Jim Carrey back is going to make BANK over the Christmas break.

Paramount will likely reboot to fully animated films like the recent Mario after Sonic 3. Being fully animated would give the next Sonic movie a much much higher boxoffice ceiling, especially in a post Mario film world.

That's what I want too. Let this story end on a high note, as a trilogy fondly remembered by the fans for years to come alongside the best of the games. Then, get Marza to do an animated reboot in the style and spirit of the fantastic opening setpiece in Sonic Unleashed. I just hope they don't turn it into an emotionally hollow jukebox like that Mario movie was, and they prioritize actual character work above all.

No way. If it moves out of December, I don't know what they'll do, but I just can't see February being the month they choose. February would show lack of confidence, especially since this is the exact kind of film which would do gangbusters over that Christmas-New Years break.

The first movie did well in that window, at least before the apocalypse commenced, so I think that's why he suggested that. The strikes caused filming to start a lot later than they'd wanted it to as well.

Think this will move to February 2025

If they can't get the effects done on time, then they'll likely push it off. Otherwise there's no reason for it to vacate that lucrative holiday slot. Moana 2 will open big but likely lose steam quickly and be pretty much done by the time Sonic 3 arrives. And who honestly sees Mufasa, a prequel no one asked for to a movie no one wanted a followup to, as a serious threat at this point?

Huh... could this dilute the brand a bit?

I don't think so. If anything, it'll actually help it. Knuckles is actually a popular character who can easily carry his own story, unlike most of the characters Marvel handed spinoffs to like candy. Also unlike the barrage of Dragons TV series it seems to be distinct enough from the main movies to not dilute their value.

Yeesh. Really terrible numbers all things considered. Will likely find a cult audience later on but it definitely won't be a box office hit. Definitely won't open even in the teens.

I'm honestly kind of surprised they even bothered with a theatrical release. It seems like an uber-nice artpiece that likely would've been dumped on Peacock if it weren't for the strikes depriving exhibitors of content. It being placed on the lethal Super Bowl weekend was, in hindsight, a sign of their lack of faith in it.

So she got cut out of the actual story. Honestly I'm not surprised. Alia as presented in the book just isn't filmable. She just isn't. It makes sense to shelve her for now and introduce her in the Messiah movie if it gets made. The book is apparently set 12 years after the first one, and Denis can easily add another 10 years to that in order to have Anya reprise the role, if you're right. That change can also push Paul closer to Little Timmy's actual age when filming begins for a third movie.

Very glad to hear this! Hopefully being given more room to grow gives them the opportunity to turn this into a truly great story. I still enjoyed the first season, but the overreliance on exposition and weird pacing prevented it from being truly great. I'm hoping for the best!

Oh, absolutely. It seems like reactions will point out if you loved first Dune you'll love this one even more and if you only liked it you'll love this one. Also lots of mentions of it being more action-packed and apparently a surprise that hasn't been mentioned or at least as much spread.

    Spoiler

How much do you want to bet it's Alia, considering that she hasn't been shown once in any of the footage released, and that she's an outright unfilmable character in the world presented in the last movie.

That'd be financial suicide. I know this community is very defensive of this reboot, but the matter is, everyone just shrugged it off when it was released and forgot about it. A sequel to that would make less worldwide than Afterlife did in its domestic opening weekend alone. Sony went back to the original continuity for the exact same reason Paramount redid Sonic's design: it just made business sense. It's not a "cowardly move to appease the nasty fans". It wasn't just the fans that felt, at best, apathetic towards it, you know.

At least now I know the Frozen Empire weekend thread is going to be insufferable if it even slightly underperforms, so I'll be ready for that scenario if it comes to pass. And at least Goji will be here the week after to cleanse this board.

Sort of a given. Though I wonder if a full red band might wait till there's an actual related movie to play it with.

The movie just wrapped filming so I'm not expecting anything beyond a 30-second spot focusing on a practical scene without much in the way of effects. They can get such an ad done on time. But I do agree that we likely won't be getting a full trailer for a couple more months yet. If I had to guess it'll be May with Apes.

  11. Argylle... I just finished watching itthrough a theater recording since it isn't playing here, and that was one of the stupidest, most nonsensical movies ever made. And not in a good way like Malignant. It was pretty bad and infuriatingly dumb. What Apple saw in that script is beyond me. The twists are all just as bad as everyone online is saying. The acting was generally hokey and phoned in. The action was largely forgettable. And it just looked atrocious, especially when that cat became CGI. It was also a tonal mess. It's not objectively as bad as Apple's last movie Napoleon, and there are a couple of cool, if rather artificial-looking, setpieces in the third act. But I thought it still was really bad. No wonder why word of mouth is so toxic for it, and why it flopped so badly this weekend. I really hope Apple's other two tentpoles for the year are better.

Even Argylle's benefiting from there being nothing out. There's no way a film with WOM as toxic as this is rising from projections like this and getting to almost 20M if there was actual good food to eat. At this rate, Madame Web's gonna open to 200M lmao

That second weekend drop is going to be legendary, between the awful word of mouth and the Super Bowl. Could it get to a 90% drop?

Is it just me, or has this film developed some impressive late staying power? Last month we were doubting if it'd cross $200M. Now, not only did it cross that, but it's still making nearly $5M on a weekend a month and a half into its run. I wonder where it'll ultimately end up in the end. Great for both Paul King and Little Timmy though, and they'll likely return to Warner in the future as long as Zsasz reigns himself in. Let's see how many tickets your husbando sells next month.

A streaming film that should be released in theaters is Beverly Hills Cop 4. Trailer is getting great viewing numbers and the original shot to the top ten in Netflix after that trailer released

After a year where most nostalgia tentpoles either underperformed or bombed, that one is best suited for Netflix. People won't pay up for them anymore, but they'll be happy to watch it on a service at home that they're most likely already subscribed to beforehand. I feel like Beverly Hills Cop 4 wouldn't do all that much better than, say, My Greek Wedding 3. It'd be lucky to even make half as much as The Flash.

Godzilla vs Kong was smart editing. They cut out unnecessary backstory for a number of characters. IIRC, Eiza Gonzalez was supposed to have some daddy issues backstory, similar with Serizawa's son, same with the evil corporation, and more mumbo jumbo with the skull and stuff. Someone along the way realised that no one cares about that stuff and inserted a big fight every 20 minutes instead.

Yeah, I remember hearing reports about it being heavily cut down after King of the Monsters failed. Thankfully, unlike many other situations like this in Hollywood, Adam Wingard seems to have had a decent seat at the table through it all, as indicated by him gleefully returning for this one. And this time they went in with the knowledge of what the fans truly want instead of having to retroactively change the movie after filming, so hopefully the movie is great and it pays off next month.

Remember when Batman v Superman was seen as a special event because of just how bad its word of mouth was? Good times. Now we get a sea of BvS'es all year round. The deterioration of Hollywood this decade will be one for the history books.

The audience does not care who the real Agent Argylle is.

Everyone already knows. In fact, it was out in the open for years, as early as from back when the movie was first announced. In the social media age, word spreads faster than light. And with their friends digging the old announcement up and posting on Twitter and TikTok about it, why should people fork the money to see a movie that can't stand on its own without that surprise factor?
