With Bond 25's international release set for that date, I wonder if Sony will give those markets an early release. If that happens, it would be the weekend right before the start of college for me. I hope it happens.

I still think Afterlife is going to pull a Dark Fate/The Suicide Squad and bomb, but @EmpireCity isn't someone to be taken lightly. He fully backed Free Guy and that was a hit while he winced at Reminiscence and Respect, which both bombed hard (the latter's theatrical window was cut short as a result, being dumped on PVOD only two weeks after its release).

EmpireCity has this to say for Sunday as of now:

Nah, I didn't make the same math error today. $23.2m at least.
Right in line with Jatinder's projections. Very good. How much further than $70M can this movie get over 3 days? Because that's the floor at this point.

This is definitely bombing. A theatrical exclusive launch while a new, lethal wave of COVID begins? Sounds like a mess that is being dumped much like New Mutants (ironically that also was an August "release").
Disney probably wishes they made this movie themselves so that they could legally send it to Disney+ Premier Access and at least make some money off of it.

Snake Eyes, a movie that was moved up by three months in an era of setbacks and delays, crashing and burning as hard as it did is damn near lethal for a studio as unstable as Paramount. It makes perfect sense for them to bow out for the year and save their marketing money for later down the line.
Although, in hindsight, maybe moving Jackass Forever up to September (which now belongs entirely to Shang-Chi) might have worked out. That IP is an inexpensive one, which makes it a safe investment under any situation.

This might have a decent opening courtesy of curious Conjuring fans, but I'm fully expecting this to drop by at least 70% in its second weekend. It sounds borderline insane, and I'm not sure people outside of avid horror fans are going to be into that. After all, we saw what happened when The Suicide Squad, a Troma shlockfest disguised as a blockbuster, bombed as hard as it did. We'll see.

Is Shang-Chi seriously about to outdo Black Widow?

Damn, that is a great number for Shang-Chi! Well deserved for an awesome movie like it! I don't like ranking things, but if I did this would easily be in my top 10 MCU ranking.
This was also my first premium format experience, as I saw it in IMAX. I just so happened to be seeing some family in another big province, which just so happened to have IMAX screens. Wonderful experience, to say the least. For those of you wondering: yes, the copy of the film that has been given to IMAX operators does fill the whole screen since it was fully shot with IMAX cameras. No black bars. I believe Eternals is the same as well.
For the 3 day, is $70M happening now? Or even $80M?
-
I wonder if that low Friday is also partially because of Ida.
-
Damn, this is going to pull a Black Widow, isn't it?
The train for Eternals Premier Access will be departing soon. Hop on aboard before Disney pulls the trigger!

The Deadline projections actually pan out and the movie barely makes $45M over 4 days
-
I'm honestly expecting the film to somewhat underperform because of all the flooding happening in the US. All we can hope now is that studios don't panic and start delaying movies again.

I kind of want them to swap Ghostbusters and Venom 2 now. The former's pretty much the equivalent to Heath Ledger's Joker burning a giant pile of cash, and dumping it on October will at least ensure it bombs quietly. Venom 2 will benefit greatly from being in a far less crowded month, only truly butting heads with Eternals instead of Halloween, Bond and Dune. The trailers indicate buzz is strong.

Thanks, Henry! This is what he ended up doing to Paramount's 2021 slate.

Calling it now: Matrix 4 opens big but also drops big (maybe even bigger than The Suicide Squad).
And Sing 2 outright flops. Pets 2 came out a mere 3 years after the first one-a short gap for animation-and its revenue got melted by half. Sing 2 not only has a longer 5 year gap (which contributed to Godzilla 2 and TSS both bombing) but also a pandemic to deal with-a pandemic starring unvaccinated kids.
Of course, both of those movies are holifay tentpoles and there is a certain... megaevent happening right around that time that I haven't even begun to take into account.

In the meantime, we can count this as a win for @charlie Jatinder since his main competition in numbers is gone for September.

@EmpireCityhas no one to blame but himself. He really shouldn't have prolonged this at all, but he did.

Holy shit, that's a 26% drop for Free Guy!

Very nice result for Candyman. Hopefully it'll also have at least decent staying power, especially with Shang-Chi on the way.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Malignant bombs and Warner decides to meddle with Aquaman 2 much like Josstice.
