The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo
Borobudur replied to grim22's topic in Numbers and Data
Deadline projecting 20-30m 5 days opening https://deadline.com/2021/03/godzilla-vs-kong-opening-weekend-box-office-record-1234724112/ the Legendary monster mash is expected to deliver the biggest domestic debut for a major studio movie during this span (since late March 2020) with an estimated $20M-$30M over Wednesday through Sunday. In regards to when Los Angeles moves to 50% capacity for indoor cinemas, we’ll hopefully know more today; the expectation is the benchmark won’t be notched until after Easter weekend. The only exception to that is if California hits 4 million vaccinations in disadvantaged communities. If that happens, the state will elevate to the Orange tier, which could be before this weekend. On the upside for Warner Bros, it will have full control of Imax and PLFs for the month of April between Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat. Of the former’s theater count, 285 sites are Imax auditoriums, 650 are PLF screens, over 700 are 3D, with another 150 drive-ins. -

If Unhinged and The marksman are any guide, 30m total for Nobody is possible, meaning domestic market can now produce 30m grosser consistently , including GvK next week

But is GvK worth 8.4 even in the first place? 2nd, IMDB is no longer as irrelevant as it used to be -

You mean frame by frame remake? It would be soulless -
If even a high profile tentpole like GvK failed to draw reasonable massive crowd, theater during summer holiday will be gone

I don't think their enthusiasm towards Hollywood product have not been diminish, they are just lag behind the overall market growth. This is reasonable as China film industry were first grew in coastline big cities where people are more receptive to foreign product . As market continue to expand toward inland cities in recent year, the demand for Hollywood films didn't pick up proportionally. Overall effect are Hollywood share decreases. That probably explain why you have Hollywood films dominated the chart in the first 20 years of liberalization but quickly reversed shortly after. As for boycotting, Erm...China basically boycott things on the daily basis. There is even a joke on their "daily boycott schedule"

The first major drop of DS finally happen, still 14m should happen. Didn't expect this and Soul could come so close to each other after Soul did so well over the holiday
-
Last Wednesday number was a bit unusual. 50% over Tuesday without cultural day.

31Mar is a state holiday in California, it should have some decent overperforming -
Seem like DS will finally have a serious drop this weekend with GvK arriving
-
Couldn't it be the service booking charge that Fox decided to include them just like how China include them after 2016.

I don't think they are tepid, in fact it is quite solid so far although we know early reaction tend to be more positive but I didn't remember KoTM have this similar solid reception at first. -

That probably explain relatively short run time of GvK. They waste no time on human drama as if no one is coming for IT clown -

The holiday has short history, and most of the time the holiday were fallen on weekend so I can't really see significant bump on 31Mar in these past few years. But when it was on Thursday in 2016, I did see a lot of movies having unusual bump collectively. -

GvK is also kind of family movie with more action sequences and VFX packed. Should have big screen value
