The Box Office Buzz, Tracking, and Pre-Sale Thread
Vector Sigma replied to Shawn Robbins's topic in Box Office Discussion
I don't think the DCEU dying is a good excuse anymore. I know a few people with gigantic comic-book collections who were completely unaware DC was getting a new universe. At some point I just wonder, are people just not interested in superhero movies anymore? Of all of my students, the only superhero movies they saw recently were No Way Home and Wakanda Forever. -
I think this is what's happening to Hollywood movies across the world. I'm at the point where I mostly watch foreign movies/shows and the production values have shot up. I guess the logic is why watch a Hollywood movie with a meh story when you can just watch a local movie with similar production.

After learning about how they didn't know if Tobey and Andrew were gonna be in No Way Home and they still started filming, I'm beginning to think the MCU was based on luck. They've made some great movies, Endgame, Black Panther, Guardians, but the new book is exposing how unprofessional the productions are. Perlmutter was an idiot seeing as his refusal for a Black Panther movie almost resulted in them missing out on 2 billion dollars, but I can't help but feel he kept a leash on Feige. I'm not ready to say the MCU is dead, but I do believe Endgame was the peak.

I know it sounds nuts but just because a company sets a price it doesn’t mean they’re gonna get it. I look at WWE as an example. Should have went for 6-7 billion like they wanted but nobody wanted it for that price even though it was technically worth it. If the strike lasts past August theaters are cooked next year. Let’s assume today you purchased DC for 6 billion. Thanks to the strike, you won’t be able to write until at least August so any non Superman movies have to wait until 2026. Video games can be delayed (The new Suicide Squad) so you can’t necessarily count on them. Streaming is gonna pop so there goes that money. Then there’s the fact that physical media is practically dead along with comic books. Considering how they botched half of the Justice League you probably can’t even get that movie running until 2030. It would take a long time to get that cash back and it might scare people off. I’d be inclined to agree 4 billion is more reasonable but I don’t think anyone would wanna go higher.

WGA/SAGAFTRA Strike Discussion Thread | SAG Ratifies Contract
Vector Sigma replied to Eric Loves Rey's topic in The Speakeasy
I’m 110 percent in favor of the strike but I think no matter what not everyone can get what they want. I feel like the studios know they messed up going to streaming and there isn’t as much money in it as they thought. If we found out how many people are really watching these shows stock prices are gonna tank. Universal will be fine thanks to their parent company but studios like Paramount and WB might have to be bought out. We’re gonna have to get used to less blockbusters a year and be open to animation. Hollywood is gonna be hurting for money soon. -
Just saw it. Snooze fest. I could see an A- but I’d say the CinemaScore is a B+ or maybe even a B. Lighthearted movie but not many jokes. Some set pieces were just copied from Raiders. My biggest issue was how disrespectful the female lead was to Indy. I came around to her by the end but this movie is gonna give go woke go broke nerds ammo. This era of deconstructing icons has to stop.

I have a friend who manages a theater and he told me recently that he's dropping premium screens for Indy the moment he gets the chance. I would have thought middle America would have been kinder to Indy but if they're not going crazy I don't think urban Gen-Z kids are gonna turn out either. Judging by how bad he said sales were, I personally wouldn't be surprised if this opened in the 50 range. I know I'm just a random guy on the internet, but if I were you I'd be careful with the predictions.

2022EN_fact.pdf (bandainamco.co.jp) [Edit: Page 03-04] Sorry my math was wrong, it's 205 million USD for 2022. I'm a translator, not a mathematician lol. Bandai Namco posts their yearly reports openly. Kamen Rider movies don't seem to make more that 15 million, I guess this is a Cars situation where the toys make more than the films.

Can anyone explain wtf happened to Shin Kamen Rider? Those numbers are horrific. I don't recall seeing any buzz for it on social media and I don't know any of my Japanese friends that had an interest. There were some big stars in there and the movie was at least decent. Kamen Rider brings in like 350 million USD a year in merch alone. I'm shocked.

I saw a woman from Japan post on Instagram how much she loved the movie and it was filled with racist comments (from English speakers too lol). I despise these kinds of movies but gave it a shot after reading those comments and was pleasantly surprised. I loved the movie. Bailley has an innocent charm to her and even her cadence is like Bailley. They didn't advertise the movie well. Lots of people don't even know it takes place in Jamaica. Makes way more sense to have a Black Ariel. I'm a Jamaican and we have plenty of folk tales about mermaids, so it felt natural to me. Most of the movies that have flopped this year have been with White leads. Do we stop giving White actors roles because of this summer? C'mon man.

B+ close to being locked. Wouldn't be surprised if it got a B. People are uploading big parts of the movie online and proudly proclaiming that they pirated. At a certain point you have to figure that WB shot themselves in the foot with all of the hype. Ezra's actions are also clearly having an effect too.

The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)
Vector Sigma replied to Cap's topic in Numbers and Data
Yeah that's it, Flash is DOA. China's not coming to the rescue either. Utter disaster for WB. None of the Snyder actors can return. If it weren't for the December release date, I'd have Aquaman 2 under 500 but then again, it's not impossible.
