  1. Um one is a PG family movie released on Thanksgiving with a pretty straightforward trailer and the other is an R sci-fi epic released around Halloween with a confusing as hell trailer. Not that hard to figure out. ;)But I was worried Pi might end up going the Hugo route though. Glad it hasn't.
  2. Well I'd slightly rank SM3 over TASM solely because I still prefer watching a mediocre new movie to a decent retread. TASM brought nothing new to the table for the franchise. At least SM3 had some interesting ideas, even if they failed.
  3. I found the film to have so many strokes of subtle brilliance on the second viewing I upped it from an A to A+. I recommend seeing it twice to appreciate everything.
  4. Without totally spoiling what it's really about, I'll just say it's a character study movie. And definitely not really about what the trailers make it look like.
  5. I can't wait to see how close Wralph ends up to it for the 5 day. Annoyed though that Wralph couldn't have gotten Guardians release date now.

  7. I never said that, so hope you weren't addressing that at me.
  8. That is admittedly a very strong Sat for BD2. Still sticking by it being the most OW frontloaded though. I think the core fans are seeing it over and over this weekend, hence the better than normal Sat hold.
  9. Except it didn't even have a $100m OW, let alone a $150m or $200m one like the movies you mentioned. Don't get me wrong though, near 50% is a very solid hold for it. Amazing though would have been more along the lines of 40% given its OW number.
  10. Yeah, I really don't see how not at least matching BD1 can be called anything but disappointing for it.
  11. But at the end of the day the movie didn't stick for me. I saw it a few times when it came out and now I can barely remember much about it, aside from a few witty lines and delivery from Eisenberg. And I felt Fincher was trying to encapsulate what an entire generation was about and he didn't really succeed on that front.
  12. I'm with riczhang on this one. I was one of the few who wanted Hooper to win and thought TSN was overrated in every aspect, including direction. Aronofsky would have been fine by me as well but it never would have happened.
  13. Exactly, which is why I don't think Hooper will get Director. He's too new for the Academy to give it to him twice, especially practically back to back. Affleck also hasn't really "earned" his stripes with the acadmey yet either. It's only his third movie and his first director nomination. I doubt they give it to him. It's been long enough and he's old enough that I could see them giving it to Spielberg one last time and putting him up there as one of the handful of directors to win 3 times.
  14. I expect Les Mis to be its main BP competition. So if that disappoints then I think Lincoln will take BP. I think Spielberg actually has a good chance at winning director as well.
  15. I loathe Field as an actress in general. However I thought she was near a revelation in Lincoln. It's the first time she's even come close to award worthy to me. I really am unsure if I've ever seen a more nuanced performance than DDL in this one. He didn't have the hysterics or dramatics he got to show in There Will Be Blood, but I was just as captivated by this performance as that one, just in an entirely different way. He really is deserving of that "best actor alive" title TIME plastered him with. And yeah the movie was definitely slow and dialouge heavy, but I thought it was a fascinating study of the politics and people of the time period. For some reason it never bored me despite its slowness. In fact some of the moments of silence in it were more engaging than anything else. I just found it remarkably well done and like I was actually able to step into a time machine and see how a part of history really unfolded.
  16. I thought it was an acting tour de force and subtly poignant. I'm so glad Spielberg didn't go the sweeping bombastic route with it. By showing restraint for once he made his best movie in 15 years, imo. And I'm ready for DDL, Field, and Jones to all get their Oscar right now. Astounding performances right there.
  17. See, those two movies looked like adult audience gold mines to me all along. Never did understand why either one were being treated like little indie films no one would see. Both should've been given 3000+ TC wide releases.
  18. That would be a fine hold then. Yeah I guess Lincoln would steal some audience.
  19. In a bad way. With the great WOM it was supposedly getting 65% drop is pretty bad. That big of 2nd weekend drops are usually reserved for $120m+ OWs.
