  1. Insane for Journey, Vow, and SH. Little disappointing for TPM (by my expectations at least), but this weekend is amazing.
  2. If 3D sticks around, I can't wait to see what numbers the OT re-releases can pull if TPM can manage a $30m+ OW.
  3. My point is that if some genric February thriller can hit $40m OW, a tentpole film with tons of hype could easily double that.
  4. Safe House, OMG. Denzel has to be as big of a draw as any other actor out there to take such a generic film as SH to a $40m OW. Can you imagine if he ever does a blockbuster type film? If he does, look out Depp and Smith. This weekend is crazy amazing. If this continues into next month when we actually get some big name films hitting, we're in for a record March. And my $90m Hunger Games OW prediction suddenly is looking very attainable.
  5. I literally got a rush from that flying sequence in Imax 3D. Felt like I had a buzz going, lol. Damn I'd kill to get the chance to see that again like that.
  6. Yeah that would be my third. For me the top 5 best 3D I've seen would be:1. How to Train Your Dragon2. Avatar3. Hugo4. Coraline5. Beowulf
  7. The best 3D I ever saw was hands down How to Train Your Dragon on Imax. It was truly breathtaking aesthetically and the "in your face" effects were phenomenal. That's gotta be in my top 5 movie going experinces ever. Avatar's 3D is easily 2nd, but HTTYD's was just in another league. I was disappointed in TF3's 3D. I saw it in Imax expecting the 3D to lend itself amazingly to a movie like that, and to me it was like so many of the live action 3D movies where you can barely notice the effect at all.
  8. No, Hugo is certainly a box office bomb, no matter how acclaimed. Such a shame too. I'd at least be happy if it could hit the $80m mark with the awards season, but I doubt it.
  9. If Descendants can hold steady through the Oscars it might be able to leg itself to $100m.
  10. Pretty boring weekend. At least The Artist is guarenteed not to be the lowest grossing BP winner now.
  11. Who knows what the 10th film was (it better not have been Potter or I'd REALLY be pissed EL and Tree got in) but one thing I do know is this BP new rule this year proved to be entirely pointless. Here we had a craptastic year (for the oscar baiting films) and they still nominated 9 of them. They may as well just keep the rule at 10. It's more consistent.
  12. Yeah, I believe the sweep he's looking for would be Hurt Locker's.
  13. I wholeheartedly disagree. This was one of the few years where blockbusters were far stronger overall than the typical Academy baiting smaller films. Blockbusters like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Potter, and First Class were easily superior films to the likes of "Loud"(obvious reasons), "Midnight"(nice little rom-com, but BP material? No.), "Tree of Life"(apparently BP's don't need to make any logical sense), or "War Horse" (oh so been there, done that Spielberg).
  14. Those are by far the two most deserving of the 9, imo. I'd love to see Hugo win out of those, but it won't.
  15. To this day I still can't fathom how they could nominate The Reader that year but neither The Dark Knight nor Wall E.
  16. Watching a Lifetime movie is less painful than Extremely Loud. I hope no one lets its joke nomination persuade them into seeing it.
  17. I really am getting tired of stuff like Apes, Potter, and Drive getting snubbed because they don't fit the certain genre the Academy thinks a best picture/director/actor has to come from, while meanwhile Lifetime caliber movies like Extremely Loud vie for Best Picture. There's just so many things wrong with the noms this year, I really wish we could just get a whole new comitee on the Academy and get rid of some of these old farts that are stuck 2, 3, and even 4 decades in the past.On the few plus sides, I'm happy to see Hugo score so many noms (all deserved) and Nick Nolte score for Warrior. That movie was so overlooked in so many categories this awards season.
  18. It got a better average rating, but TS3 still has the higher percentage and won the Golden Tomato for the best reviewed film of the year.
  19. Considering the #1 grossing movie of the year and the best reviewed movie of the year have been the same 2 years running, I'd say fairly often.
  20. I for one love seeing classics on the big screen again. There's nothing like a movie theater to watch a film and there's absolutely nothing wrong with giving people a chance to do that with some older favorites. As far as unoriginiality, these 3D re-releases really have nothing to do with the studios not having new ideas. For example, this one was a fairly last minute call by Disney after TLK's success, and it's not like BATB3D wasted any creative resources that might have prevented Disney from putting some other new movie out instead. That would be called a remake, and I'll take these 3D re-releases over most of the crappy remakes anyday. Maybe you could call these things cash grabs, sure, but they really have nothing to do with the lack of ideas in hollywood. And speak for yourself on the "inherently bad 3D", since both TLK and BATB shocked me with how well the 3D worked. Speaking of things inherent, animation inherently lends itself to 3D technology irregardless of the style of animation. So I especially welcome these 3D animated re-releases because not only are they back on the big screen, there is something new added to them as well. Now Titanic and TPM are the ones I would be very skeptical about 3D adding anything, since it only ever has in a handful of live action films to date.
  21. The only bad thing about all these movies that have exceeded expectations so far this year is that none of them are any good.
  22. Wow, absolutely phenomenal start for 2012. I'd love for this to be a sign that the B.O. slump is over this year, though that's probably just wishful thining. I can't stand that garbage like TDI of all things had to be the one to break out and beat the OW of so many good movies from this past Holiday season, but then again it's total won't be anywhere near most of those anyways. I'm in awe of Mission's run. Even as recently as last summer I had totally written that one off as a surefire bomb, and here it's the clear box office champ of the post summer season of 2011. Of course I had no clue it was going to be such an awesome film either. Totally desrves its success. Impresively enough it will be the first $200m film since My Big Fat Greek Wedding to never have a weekend of at least $30m.
