Hopefully I won't start WW3 by asking this but does Israel box office also include the West Bank, Gaza Strip (are there any cinemas there?) and East Jerusalem? I assume East Jerusalem is included.

I don't know. I would expect that anything from the Arab areas of the West Bank or Gaza, would be counted elsewhere, but I really have no idea.

Dragons 2 hold.

I don't want to be too much of a downer, but that drop isn't very good considering the type of film and time of year.

Looking at previous films to open during the first week of summer holidays like this one:

Wk Toy Story 3 Madagascar 3 Monsters U HTTYD2
opening date 17/06/2010 21/06/2012 20/06/2013 19/06/2014

1: 391K/391K 381K/381K 257K/265K 225K
2: 413K/898K 377K/883K 234K/577K 204K/488K
3: 398K/1.49M 418K/1.33M 228K/1M
4: 341K/2.02M 331K/2.14M 151K/1.29M
5: 308K/2.51M 287K/2.61M 120K/1.5M
6: 218K/2.86M 221K/3.02M 116K/1.7M
7: 190K/3.31M 214K/3.4M 69K/1.86M
8: 142K/3.6M 161K/3.73M ??
9: 84K/3.78M 141K/4.03M 46K/2.08M
10: 97K/3.96M 129K/4.31M 47K/2.17M
TOTAL: 4.42M 4.51M 2.17M 488K
PROJECTED       2M
Weekend 2 change 5.60% -1% -8.70% -9.40%
Weekend 3 change -3.40% 11.10% -2.10%

As you can see, HTTYD2 opened the worst of these and had the worst drop, so not very impressive.

I know.

But I prefer a hold, than a 50% decrease.

Certainly, but Israel isn't like some other markets. A drop of 30%, much less 50%, would be completely unheard of for an animated film in this time of year. A drop of 50% for HTTYD2 in Israel would be like a drop of 85% DOM, it was never an option in the first place.

You should remain happy about its run for a long time, as next week will probably see a better hold than this week (hopefully an increase), and there is no reason for it to ever drop 50%, unless it lasts until September when the school holiday ends and it will drop 70-80%.

Looking at BOM, Dragon 1 dropped 80% the weekend after Passover. It actually made half of its total gross over the Passover holiday (it increased almost 100% in its second weekend!)Two questions: Has the exchange rate changed since 2010, and have 3D percentages gone down? Even over Passover in a Jewish country, the $1m USD that HTTYD1 made in only 2 weeks looks kind of insane compared to the Israel numbers I'm seeing here. (Was it the 3D effect? Were 3D premiums higher relative to normal ticket prices than in the US? Avatar did huge numbers, of course, but so did Alice. Nothing else in 2010 seems to compare to those 3.)Do you know how the two Dragon films compare admissions-wise up to this point in their runs?

Having huge increases for animated films is the norm, the two Dragon films will probably have pretty similar totals in the end, but their way of getting there will be completely different because of the different release dates. Don't really know about admissions or 3d percent, but I believe that 3d is down. As for exchange rate, the Dollar is a little weaker now, so it would give a small boost to the second one, but it's not a big difference. There is nothing special about 1M after the second weekend, HP8 made 1.2M just in its opening weekend, and was over 2.2M after its second weekend, and there have been plenty of other films to go well over 1M after the second weekend. In fact you can check out Alice that opened a week before HTTYD and had its first three weekends go 875K-817K-717K, or Smurfs with 958K-861K-652K-557K if you want huge runs by Israeli standards. One of the higher openings for a Sandler film, comedies are doing really well this year. Sabrina should be happy, this really is a good increase for HTTYD2, interesting to see where this winds up. Relatively high drop for 22JS but it's still OK. Transformers 4 drop is a little worse than the last one, unlikely to make a million.

I'm happy!  :D

Go Dragons!
