Dredd (September 21, 2012)

Recommended Posts

Well, what else made it a success? It wasn't a well liked movie, and nobody knew what the fuck a Judge Dredd was. It was big because in '95 we still had universal stars like Stallone, unlike in todays fragmented celebrity culture

I don't think you got the joke.

Where is Judge Dredd most popular? The UK, where the true 2000AD fans are.

Judge Dredd: £7m

Dredd: £3.6m

I guess the bad the WOM really hurt it in 1995 (y'know, everyone hating it and all), and the good WOM really helped it in 2012. Even with 17 years of inflation, Dredd could only muster half of what Judge Dredd earned. You guys, lol.

It did so much in 95 because it had Stallone. Nuff said.

Judge Dredd's WOM was so toxic that when released on VHS rental and for sale on Laserdisc, it topped the charts. Now lets see if Dredd can do the same on anything, in any market. Doubt it'll even feature in the top 5, and for such a loved movie, well we'll see.

...and this new Dredd is so loved, so why the severe decrease? £3.6m is not very good at all for a British movie of a British character and with 17 years of inflation. Pitiful. It didn't even put up a contest.

In that time WOM didn't spread like today. It was a different era. Stallone in the cover was alone to put people renting the movie.

There was no interest in a new Dredd movie, even if people are hearing good things, they will just download the movie and save the money for other stuff. Dredd will be huge in number of downloads.

CJohn, your 'cut and dry' answers are very childish. You think there is one answer to everything you see. The world isn't that simple, man.

Judge Dredd did not make £7m in the UK purely because Stallone was on the cover. Assassins didn't make that much, neither did The Specialist, heck neither did Demolition Man!

People actually liked the movie, that is why it also did well on VHS rental. In the 6 months between theatrical and rental, don't you think that if it had such toxic WOM that people wouldn't have bothered to rent it? I am sure people also disliked it, and I am not trying to hide that, but for a film to make that much money, it could not have been hated. The UK is a tough place to make any sort of money, and £7m is a great achievement. Dredd on the other hand, can only make half of that. So, if a film that was universally hated made £7m, what does that say about a film that only made half of that? Doesn't say much for its WOM, that's for sure.

The reason why I think pretty everyone who has seen this movie liked it so much was because it wasn't just an action movie. It was gritty, suspenseful, and had quite a few jaw-dropping scenes in it. To me, the most surprising part of it was how artistic it was, the makers were clearly aiming above the fray with this film and it definitely payed off. Also, the 80s style deadpan humor in it was some of the best I've seen.

Also Algren, you admittedly haven't even seen Dredd yet. Posted Image

Some of my favorite humorous moments:

When Dredd pulls out the stun grenade and tells Anderson "Lets gives them the good news" By giving them

"Good News" he meant "I'm giving these perps 30 seconds to clear out before I blow them all away"

Another one was at the end after the shit hit the fan inside the building for 2 hours and the boss asks Dredd "What happened?" His response "The perps were uncooperative"

What a fucking badass movie. Posted Image

JD was a giant BOMB, considering its budget. What better way to show it's a dumb movie, than BOMBING!! It was not a success, it was a BOMB!!And it bombed so bad it made it very hard for the new and vastly superior movie to gain attention. Because JD had already shat all over the Dredd name.Still, BO doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is that there's a REAL Dredd movie now, so the old garbage can at last be put down like a knackered horse and forgotten. Dredd 3D is dozens time better than JD in every way possible - and they made it with what amounts to a quarter of JD's budget! ;) LOL

Anyone who actually lived through the 80's wouldn't say that. So I assume you didn't. NOTHING about Dredd reminded me of the 80's at all. Well except that maybe when I was TWELVE all the ultra violence would have been enough to hold my interest.
