The Top 100 Movie Characters - Results (Results are in)

Recommended Posts

84: Ace Ventura – Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura 1+2

(19pts and 4 votes)

And it’s a double whammy for Big Jim with a second place in a row in the top 100. Starring in The Mask, Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura all in one year, 1994 was truly a break out year for the man who took over-acting to all new heights. Ace Ventura would split audiences down the middle as to whether it was a new breed of hilarious modern comedy or an abomination of over the top stupidity that needed to die. Whichever side you may be in that argument, it is hard to deny that fans of the style absolutely loved Ace Ventura and with Dumb and Dumber being filmed as we speak, who knows if even Ace Ventura 3 is not just a year or two away.

83: Harry Potter – Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Potter 1-8

(19pts and 5 votes)

It must have been a nightmare casting the first Harry Potter film. You have a bunch of 10 year olds lined up in front of you and you have to hope that whoever you pick will grow up into a great actor over the course of the next 8 years. Luckily with just a few misfires in the minor characters, the Harry Potter folks pretty much nailed it, the main three were almost perfectly cast and Radcliffe in particular makes you feel there couldn’t be any other Harry Potter (and especially makes you wonder what would have happened if Haley Joel Osmond had gotten the role.

82: Professor Fate – Jack Lemon, The Great Race

(20pts and 1 vote)

The second of the three single vote characters is a comedy character from the 60’s. Sadly this is not a character I know in great detail but Jack Lemon has played a great number of great characters in movies such as Some like it Hot, The Apartment and The Odd Couple. For this performance to come out on top of those other roles must lend some gravitas to its position in the top 100.

81: Superman – Henry Cavill, Man of Steel

(20pts and 2 votes)

Superman is one of, if not the most iconic character in comic books yet his transferal to the big screen has been met with differing results. Christopher Reeves may have had a successful debut as the ‘man of Steel’ but by the time Superman 4 came about, the character was drained of almost all box office credibility. Rumored returns came and went (Nicholas Cage one notable example) and even one big screen return with Brandon Routh didn’t hit the heights fans maybe felt it Superman deserved. Finally this year we saw the rebooting of Superman in Man of Steel, with Henry Cavill charged with giving the character the Nolan/Bale treatment. 81st on our list suggests that maybe Cavill will in future be able to surpass what Reeves started 25 years ago.

Also, I suspect at least one of the other two to make it on thanks to a highly-placed vote to be mine as well

Called it!

Also, how did MoS's Superman get this high over characters like Mulan and Sarah Connor? He was a fucking joke.

THE LOWEST BATTING AVERAGES (so to speak)

With bonus points available for receiving multiple votes, the general popularity of a character become more important than merely being hugely popular with one super fan. With these added bonuses only the most consistently low placed people would miss out on the top 100 if they acquired the backing of at least 3 or 4 voters.

In fact out of all the 555 characters who received votes only one failed to make the top 100 despite receiving 4 votes or more: Chewbacca. Everyone’s favourite discount Bigfoot could only amass 11 points from 4 voters combined. When you take out the 5 bonus points for 3 votes that is a measly average of 1.5 points per vote.

That isn’t the worst points average out there though, out of all the people to receive 3 votes or more, that honour goes to Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels – Dumb and dumber) who’s 3 votes contributed a total of just 9 points to his cause – A pre-bonus average of just 1.33. For Harry Potter’s 5 vote total of 19 points was the worst average to make it into the top 100 list (at 1.8 per vote).

80: Donkey – Eddie Murphy, Shrek 1-4

(20pts and 2 votes)

Shrek was the movie that showed Disney / Pixar that there was another big animation player in town. Shrek was also the movie that showed that when it came to comedy, Eddie Murphy could still deliver and deliver he did by the bucket load with a character portrayal that early 2000’s Disney animation would have killed for. Donkey was funny, witty and cute all in one, a true comedy great and a character that still hasn’t worn thin after 4 outings and counting.

79: Scarlett O Hara – Vivian Leigh, Gone with the Wind

(20pts and 3 votes)

And another lady joins the party. What did she do? Where did she go? Well frankly folks I don’t give a damn but what I do care about is that she was the leading lady in one of the most iconic films of all time. Depending on who you ask, the biggest grossing film of all time adjusted was an epic in every sense of the word and Leigh gave the performance of her lifetime right down to the very last lines of the movie. How could it not be on the list?

78: Puss in Boots – Antonio Banderas, Shrek 2-4, Puss in Boots

(20pts and 4 votes)

And onto Shrek’s second appearance in 3 spots. Shrek 2 had an unenviable task of trying to be a quality sequel to Shrek and not only that to build upon the great double act of Shrek and Donkey. Surely it was impossible yet somehow they did it. Shrek 2 introduced Puss in Boots, a character whose popularity was strong enough to spawn a spin off film and defeat Donkey in this list. Puss in Boots was a great character and you can tell Banderas had a whale of a time playing him.

77: Morpheus – Lawrence Fishbourne, Matrix 1-3

(21pts and 2 votes)

One of the coolest characters ever and a man who drove millions of teenagers to take as many red pills as they could find (little knowing that one day they’d be disciples of the blue pill :P ). As mentioned earlier, Morpheus in the original Matrix is a near perfect character and great to watch. One can only wonder whether the less than stellar sequels hurt Fishbourne’s character and mean that Morpheus may be lower than some feel he should be in proceedings.

76: HAL 9000 – Douglas Rain, 2001: A Space Odyssey

(21pts and 4 votes)

Well we’ve already had donkeys, cats, dogs and rats so why not a computer? Cool, calm, calculated and c…menacing, Douglas Rain brought this artificially intelligent monstrosity to life in a way that captivated and haunted audiences alike.

75: R2D2 – Kenny Baker, Star Wars Episode 1-6

(21pts and 5 votes)

And another robot, albeit a far less sinister one… Sharing most of his screen time with life partner: C3PO, R2D2 was the scrappy squeaky little droid that could. Built by Anakin Skywalker R2D2 provided both aid and comic relief to our main protagonists. However I can’t really talk about Star Wars too much at this point as one or 2 other characters may be showing up later. J

74: Catherine Tramell – Sharon Stone, Basic Instinct (Yes I know there was a sequel but none of you were really thinking about that right?)

(22pts and 3 votes)

See ladies, all it takes to make the list is showing off everything that makes you a woman on the big screen; even if it’s only for a second or less. A serial killer and a sex symbol, Stone’s character is one of the best villains of modern times and that classic cinephile’s favourite of a character you both love and abhor.

73: Ferris Beuller – Matthew Broderick, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

(22pts and 3 votes)

Back when comedies were allowed to just be funny and not crude, Matthew Broderick spent a day off from school getting into the kinds of japes and hijinks the 80’s expected of you. One of a small number of films considered to be both a funny comedy AND a good film to boot, Broderick revels in his role as a college kid just wanting a day off and it’s a film and character which have stuck long after many others have fallen by the wayside.

Sad Chewy missed out on the list. :(

While I didn't vote for him, he deserved a place a lot more than MoS's Superman.

God knows, when all this is over, I'm going to compile a huge list of characters who should've made it on this list over him.

72: Norman Bates – Anthony Perkins, Psycho

(22pts and 3 votes)

A heartwarming story of a boy, the love he has for his mother and a brief shower that created one of the greatest horror movies in cinema history, A film and character so perfect that the director charged with doing a remake felt the best thing to do was just re-film the whole thing exactly the same as before. Playing two personalities in one, Perkins flips from mild mannered to murderous as the story progresses and brought with him a character that is still relevant today (Seymour Skinner will attest to that).

71: Anton Chigurh – Javier Bardem, No country for old men

(23pts and 3 votes)

An unstoppable hitman, a killer both ruthless but also maintaining a sense of sporting chance – heads you win, tails you die – Javier Bardem received almost limitless praise for his portrayal of a character lacking remorse, compassion or regret, so I’m sure he’d feel none of those emotions in knowing that he’s has won a place on this list at the expense of another.

70: Bane – Tom Hardy, The Dark Knight Rises

(24pts and 4 votes)

Oh it’s that film isn’t it? The one that splits opinion all over the site, is it great or is it awful. Is Bane a menacing, calculating villain that more than rivals Dark Knight’s Joker, or is he an easy to parody, joke of a character that one needs subtitles to even understand. It seems that the forum has voted overwhelmingly… down the line. Like many things that the masses either love or hate, Bane has his fans and has his critics. Now if only they didn’t screw him up in the final 20 minutes eh? Eh? Eh?

69: The Little Tramp – Charlie Chaplin, City Lights

(25pts and 1 vote)

Our second mute character on the list (3rd if you consider R2D2 a non-speaking character), and possibly the oldest character on the list, Charlie Chaplin is so synonymous with modern theatre that it would almost be a crime for him not to feature on our list. Despite him being the third of our 1 vote wonders, City Lights’ mention in Walt Disney’s best films per year thread suggests that this role has more fans that just the single official vote. Now to see if Youtube goes that far back in time…

68: The Wicked Witch of the West – Margaret Hamilton, Wizard of Oz

(25pts and 3 votes)

The Wizard of Oz was the big budget blockbuster of its day, shot in glorious technicolour, Margaret Hamilton was charged with bringing wickedness to life on screen. In a performance that witches have been copying ever since, the only question one has to ask is what kind of idiot thinks up an enemy that can be destroyed by mere water?

67: Tyler Durden – Brad Pitt, Fight Club

(25pts and 3 votes)

In respect to the first rule of fight club, moving on…
