Well, nevermind. A slight increase. At this point it may just get above 2 millions today.

It's really unbelievable that with this kind of weather it's doing more than what Minions did on a very very rainy Saturday. New cume is 17.693.423, which is also its opening week.

Wow, just look at that affected business. Couldn’t even hit 1.8. Sad :sadno:

I'd like to know what kind of weekdays the movie would have posted with bad weather. 2.5M a day? More?

Another rise. Increases on Wednesdays are quite common (cheaper tickets) but in the summer they're usually fairly weaker. Yesterday, however, most movies have dropped (because of Angel Has Fallen opening) so that makes LK's 8% increase more impressive.

The "Fallen" series is is continuous decline. 3.7M total for Olympus, 2.8 for London - and with this kind of OD Angel will be lucky to pass the 2M mark.

30% drops for FFH and MI6, which countinue to run extremely close to each other.

It's not uncommon for movies in Italy to get drops from OD that are greater than the weekend drop afterwards. Inside Out for example was up from its OD but down over the weekend. Aladdin behaved even worse. 1st Thursday drops are better than 2nd Thursday drops pretty much every time for Wednesday openers, and it's still probable for TLK to do something like 1.25M today, 1.4 on Friday and 4M from Sat + Sun for a weekend drop around 40%. To get sub-30% it needs bad weather to come earlier than expected (which right now is Sunday evening/night).

The Lion King is a tank. -27% from Wednesday, best drop in the top 10 by far, and even a better drop than Minions on the same day.

Minions did -40% on Monday, -2% on Tuesday, +20% on Wednesday and -37% on Thursday

The King did -41.5% on Monday, +2% on Tuesday, +8% on Wednesday and -27% on Thursday.

LK is already above 20M euros and 3M admissions. Endgame is still slightly ahead thanks to its first 2 days, the daily comparison work totally in favour of the Disney LA: 1.39M vs 506K. EG's 2nd Thursday was, in fact, its first day not boosted by a holiday.

It will be fun to see how it performs this weekend. If bad weather started on Saturday instead of Monday, I'd even put a sub-20% drop on the table.

About the rest, the huge amount of small openers hurt the weaker holdovers greatly. MIB and FFH are now out of the top 10, and for the latter (11.704.082) it's not sure if it can pass the total gross of the Amazing Spiderman (11.77).

First disappointing day for the King, as it dropped from Thursday in an overall decent Friday (the lowest rise is Angel's +12%). It fell below my (slightly pessimistic) prediction, and is now on course for a 6.5/7.0M weekend (or a 40%- from OW). Let's hope Saturday is stronger than expected.

New cume is 22.507.164, with 3.37M admissions. It will pass Endgame before or at the beginning of next weekend.

And after its first disappointing number, we have the first bad number for the Lion King: just a 17% Saturday rise, for a 1.55 Saturday that is behind its Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and even behind Minions' 2nd Saturday (1.63M), despite the fact the LA has run way above the yellow bananas through the week. This number kills every chance LK had to reach 40M euros.

Are we going to need that director's cut over here to beat TASM, or no?

Definitely. I thought it would recover over the weekend, but it has made around 12K on Thursday, Friday and Saturday combined after grossing 14K on Wednesday alone (and 55K over the 3 weekdays - unbelievable). One hell of a freefall. It needs almost 60K to overtake TASM, and it may just disappear next Thursday.

It shows how much Spider Man and MIB benefited from the lack of movie options. As soon as a pack of small movies opened, moviegoers said adieu.

BIGGEST STANDOUTS OF THE SEASON

naomi scott walk GIF by Walt Disney Studios

1. Bohemian Rhapsody
It delivered one of the biggest openings of the year (5,4M, as much as MI6’s entire run)and after that managed almost a 5,4x multiplier, something that in Italy movies usually achieve only when/if they open before Christmas. Released at the end of November, it perfectly survived the Christmas pack (Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman, Bumblebee, Ralph 2, 2 local hits,...) and once the holidays were over, it was still in the top 5. In its 10th weekend it was still in the top 10 chart, and while being a November 2018 release, it’s still in the top 10 movies of 2019 solar year. It was beaten by Endgame in total gross, but won in admissions. It would have been the craziest Hollywood run of the entire decade if not for Avatar being a 2010 release here.

2. Avengers: Endgame
The final chapter of the Avengers shattered all opening records for a Hollywood blockbuster. More than 5M on OD, 5 consecutive days above 2,5M, Infinity War and  the title of highest grossing sh ever reached in just around a week. First non-Raimi sh movie to have reached uber-blockbuster status. The insanely rainy weather in late April/May helped it a lot, but the actual number is what really counts, good luck or not. Despite the huge gross, it still trails Lion King (5,000,000+), Inside Out (4,290,000) and Bohemian Rhapsody (4,140,000) in admissions among this decade’s non-Cameron Hollywood titles, and it failed to beat Alice in Wonderland (#1 non-Cameron Hollywood movie in the official charts) by an extremely annoying 0,2%. It will be beaten by The Lion King this year, but I don’t think we’ll see a Hollywood movie beat its OD or its OW or its opening week until maybe the second half of next decade. And that’s a big maybe.

3. Green Book
A movie that came out of nowhere. #10 movie of the season in admissions, ahead of Aquaman and Captain Marvel, twice as big as MI6 and Ant-Man 2, more than 10M grossed without any recognizable name, a 6,6x multiplier, which is even higher than Bohemian Rhapsody’s. An insane success that has continued during the summer, when the movie was played (and is still playing) here and there every week with great results (40K+ admissions added).

4. Hotel Transylvania 3
Highest grossing animated title of the season (which also shows how poor this season was for animated films), above Incredibles 2 by 200K. 5-day opening above 5 million euros (and I2). It opened right after Ant Man 2 and right before MI6 and grossed more than the two combined. Along with Ralph 2, it’s the only animated movie this year that exceeded expectations. It’s also a 26% improvement over the already very solid result of HT2, which improved quite a bit from HT1 too – hard to find such a progression in a stagnant market like Italy.

5. The Nutcracker and the 4 Realms
Yes. The movie was a flop everywhere, but it turned into a strong grosser here. It opened in a pretty bad slot – 2 months away from Christmas, right on the Halloween weekend – and it went on beating Venom and A Star is Born (both opened before Nutcracker and both met/exceeded expectations). Further proof that a Disney princess (or semi-princess) movies just cannot fail here.

BIGGEST FAILURES OF THE SEASON

1. The Secret Life of Pets 2
Honestly, I’m very happy to put this junk at the top of the list. Not a biased choice, it’s really a no-brainer. It’s the sequel that saw the highest drop from its predecessor both %-wise and in absolute terms. It opened just above 1M and couldn’t even recover the weekends after. It will barely pass the 3,7M mark, meaning it will finish almost 20% lower than the original’s...opening weekend (and 74% lower than its total gross)! Out of the top 40 over the season, beaten by Five Feet Apart and a Van Gogh movie. Incredible.

2. Godzilla
Without Pets 2, Godzilla 2 would have been the clear King of the Failures. Its total gross is just 2/5 of the reboot’s result (2,2 vs 5,2) and its legs were atrocious to be generous (barely reached a 2x multiplier despite summer weekdays starting from week 2. This second chapter felt like it had nothing new to say (in fact, it didn’t) and looked bad (but it’s even worse), so not even the strong marketing campaign could save it.

3. Rocketman
250K tickets sold (1,6M total gross) for a movie that was supposed to benefit at least a bit from Bohemian Rhapsody’s insane success, that had strong awareness (trailer shown before every damn movie in May) and that was about a very popular (and peculiar) singer. The result is proportionally way worse than its already poor performance in other european countries. For example, it’s 1/3 of a somehow comparable country like Germany and even below Norway and Sweden.

4. Mortal Engines
For a big production with a big name attached, to open below 800K and get just a 2.3x multiplier despite opening a week before Christmas holidays is just terrible. Okay, the movie had bomb written on it even from the first trailer, but it’s outside the top 80 in admissions and was even well advertised.

5. The Grinch (tie)
All conditions were perfect. Ralph 2 moved to the 1st of January, there was a void among kids titles that needed to be filled, no competition for 3 straight weekends and a very good release date (a weekend that started in November and ended in December). It also received a ton of showtimes, as a Christmas movie opening before Christmas and released by the studio behind DM and Pets was supposed to do great numbers. It was also heavily advertised. Result: sub-2M opening and sub-6M total gross, less than what The Good Dinosaur did with the same release date. Even the legs were pretty poor given the theme and the lack of competition (and its 2nd weekend behind inflated by a holiday). Just a bad season for Illumination.

5. Toy Story 4 (tie)
55% decrease from TS3 and 40% drop in admissions. The drop from TS3 isn’t even comparable to the one experienced in other European countries, and the previous chapter was released in summer as well. I can find 3 main reasons for the failure: first, the 3D boost was even more noticeable in Italy than it was in the other European countries; second, in 2010 Toy Story 3 was the big title in an overall empty summer, while this time it was just one of the many options; third, Woody’s voice changed because of the unfortunate death of his dubber (Fabrizio Frizzi, highly beloved showman), a death whose effect on media and people was really something unprecedented. That said, while signs were there, having a Toy Story barely below 1M admissions (though it will go above with Siae's complete numbers) and barely above The Good Dinosaur is still something sad.
