Increases from Monday to Wednesday (which in Italy is the equivalent of a Tuesday in NA) are great for Bohemian Rhapsofy (GG effect) and At Eternity's Gate, weak for films attracting more kids, teens and families (Aquaman, Ralph, Mary Poppins). Local comedy Amici Come Prima is the only movie to be down from Monday - this weekend's drop will be brutal.

 

Today a bunch of new releases: Welcome to Marwen and City of Lies from the US front, and the local productions Attenti al Gorilla and Non ci Resta che il Crimine. None of them should be big, though the local comedies will definitely make La Befana Vien di Notte and Amici come Prima drop even more than they would normally do. Attenti al Gorilla may win the weekend.

Aquaman 20% below Venom's second Thursday, but it's not worrying as Venom only increased by 45% on Friday and grossed more than 1.6M euros on its 2nd weekend.

Ralph's dailies are too weak, it may lose the weekend battle with Aquaman.

In line with expectations for Non ci Resta che il Crimine (1/1.5M opening), solid again for BR and At Eternity's Gate. Welcome to Marwen was an announced flop. Mary Poppins out of the top 10, but it will retake a spot on Saturday and Sunday.

 

But the story of the day is Attenti al Gorilla's performance. You don't see the movie on the list because...it is NOT there. Epic flop, and from the director of many local hits, included the #8 and #14 grosses of all time (Benvenuti al Sud/Benvenuti al Nord). The premise was odd but...

Speaking of BR...Sub-20% drop (and possibly even sub-10%) on a post-holiday weekend. At this point I'm starting to wonder if Alice in Wonderland is still safe for the #1 non-Cameron Hollywood movie of all time. SW7 is toasted.

So it wasn't even that close, as Non ci Resta che il Crimine behaved a little like a family movie on Sunday, and slightly increased instead of dropping 10/15% like Aquaman did. Ralph was #1 in admissions on Sunday, but with an increase that was far from enough to beat Aquaman for the weekend (though it would have been enough with the good old 3-day weekend system). Both did pretty good I'd say for a post-Epiphany weekend.

You've probably noticed that Mary Poppins wasn't even able to get back in the top 10 on Sunday. Atrocious legs.

The weekend was down 12.62% from the same weekend last year (when local comedy Benedetta Follia opened with 3,5 millions).

2019 is so far up 5.03% from last year, but this is largely due to Sunday falling one day earlier this year.

 

The story of the weekend is once again Bohemian Rhapsody. Basically flat from last weekend's inflated gross, it is now half a million away from passing Star Wars 7 but it certainly won't stop there. In fact, it now has a solid chance of entering the top 10 of all time (#10 is currently The Da Vinci Code with 28.678.000 euros). Alice in Wonderland, #1 non-Cameron Hollywood movie of all time with 30.385.000 euros is now sweating.

 

Aquaman and Ralph both lost the battle for the top spot of the weekend, but their holds are solid. Not sure whose total gross will be higher when it's all said and done, but they're both big winners: the former because SH movies have never been that popular in Italy and even many big ones usually stop at the 7-9M range; the latter because it came 7 years after an original that only reached a poor 6.7M total during Christmas holidays, and it's going to finish within less than 10% behind HT3 and Incredibles 2.

 

Attenti al Gorilla will be pulled out of theaters in a few days. By far the worst PSA in the top 10. The other local comedies held poorly as expected.

 

Mary Poppins has YET to reach the 12M mark, and finished at #12 with an anemic 236K gross, for a drop above 75% from last weekend. It isn't even certain to beat HT3 for the #3 spot of the season. It was #1 two weekends ago (3.26M for a 9.29M total and a full week of holidays yet to come). Awful.

 

Welcome to Marwen debuted at #11 (280K).

 

This week: Glass and Mary Queen of Scots, as well as two of the usual unnecessary local products. Glass will likely be #1 with at least 1.5M (Split did 1.9M).

AN IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION ABOUT BOX OFFICE NUMBERS

 

A couple of weeks ago titanic2187 noticed there was a discrepancy between the sum of the daily numbers and the official weekend actuals.

The reason is that box office tracking isn't that simple in Italy. The daily numbers I and other users post here are the official ones released by Cinetel, but they aren't complete. A small percentage (usually a very small one) is missed, meaning - for example - that Bohemian Rhapsody most likely did make more than 100K yesterday, instead of the 99.5K reported above. Also, these are still Cinetel datas, and Cinetel only covers 19/20 of the national theaters.

What does that mean? It means that Bohemian Rhapsody currently stands at 25.2 millions by Cinetel datas, but if all theaters are counted (and that's the duty of SIAE, Italian Society of Authors and Publishers, which releases the 100% accurate numbers, but it does it very late) the number would probably be above 26 millions. Still, all sites always use Cinetel numbers to make all-time lists or analysis.

 

As of now, not a big deal. The problem is that Cinetel has been covered pretty much all theaters just for about two decades. Back in the 90s, it covered only half of the theaters (and in a era with no multiplex), meaning the official Cinetel numbers highly underestimated the real gross. For example, Aladdin isn't in the all time top 100 using Cinetel as a source (as pretty much everyone does), yet it sold twice the number of tickets Bohemian Rhapsody has sold so far. Same about Jurassic Park. So when I say that Bohemian Rhapsody has a solid chance of entering the top 10 of all time, I'm referring to the usual incomplete Cinetel numbers.

About movies released before the 90's, everything is covered by the fog. No reliable data excluding the biggest hits (ET above all).

Considering I didn't take the list from a site but I made it by checking the gross of each movie individually, I may have lost some films. Let me know if something that should be there just isn't.

The partition is valid for recent movies, but an older movie obviously belongs to a higher category. A clear example is Beauty and the Beast: it falls in the "Top Choice" category, but it's the third most attended animated movie of all time (pre-80's releases excluded, as it's impossible to do even a very rough estimate of the number of tickets sold by the Disney classics like Snow White or Jungle Book).

Madagascar, Ice Age and Shrek are (unfortunately, I must add) the biggest animated franchises. They took immense benefit from being immensely accessible in a decade when: a) the tridimensional animation exploded and Disney just didn't know what the heck it was supposed to do. b) the boxoffice produced a lot of hits (as of now, the top 50 grosses is still dominated by movies released in the first decade of this century).

Well, The Lion King will be released on August, 21st...perfect release date. Also, a big family movie always open in the second half of August, and there's no other available option as Pets 2 will come out on June and TS4 in July. And there's so reason to think Disney would be so dumb to put in danger (='deep summer' release) its best horse.

Because summer is box office poison in Italy. Theaters closed, everyone prefers to roast on the beach.

Movie chains are trying to change the habit this year...at the theater, along with trailers, there are already ads promoting the pleasure of going to the cinema in the summer, and most of the blockbusters released in the May-July period will find place in the June-August period in Italy. Let's see if it works.

That's quite a staying power for BR. Do movies usually have long leg in Italy? I remember you said most movies lost steam after week 4. Were Queen very popular in Italy before the movie?
