Black Panther opened at 470K on Valentine's Day. Justice League did 440K. They ended up with 7M totals.

Ant-Man 2 opened in the summer, so the OD was obviously inflated. IW and Aquaman's OD were holidays. Venom had mediocre legs but it still managed 8.5 millions.

Therefore...yes, it's breakout! Today, though, we'll see how much some schools being closed helped boosting the opening.

Black Panther and Justice League were both lower than AM2 if I am not wrong. So it's comparatively good but not breakout like in Asian countries.

IW and Aquabro opened on holiday. For a non avengers film is really good

Captain Marvel headed to 9-11 million euros. I don't really feel like considering a double-digit total locked, as the OD is probably a tad inflated, and Wednesday openings are tipically stronger than Thursday ones. For example, I2 opened slightly higher than Dory Wed-vs-Thu, but it finished 20/25% below on both OW and total gross. That said, Black Panther opened on a Wednesday as well, and if CM follows the same trajectory it will finish very close to FB2's 12.8M gross (currently #2 of the season).

 

Also, the holdovers will get absolutely mauled. Other than Captain Marvel, we have 2 Italian movies, 2 French movies (Asterix and Qu'est-ce qu'on a encore fait au bon dieu) and White Boy Rick.

Aquaman - 913,513 (-41%) OD was a holiday

Captain Marvel - 522, 212 (-32%)

Ant Man 2 - 336,598 (-33%) <- holiday so drop was a bit harsh

 

These are the only comps I have. The others opened on Thursday which meant their 2nd day fell on a Friday which wouldn't have been a good comparison.

This is actually a very solid hold. Initial frontloadness + schools not being closed anymore + Thursday being the weakest day of the week cost the movie only a 30% drop.

 

Black Panther dropped 50% on Thursday. This is how it behaved over the 5-day opening:

 

Wednesday (VD) > 473K

Thursday > 240K (-49%)

Friday > 374K (+56%)

Saturday > 818K (+118%)

Sunday > 840K (small increase I guess - it's a rough projection based on the weekend number and the fact this is always a little higher than the fum of each daily gross

Weekend > 2.348M (4-day), 2.822M (5-day)

 

It's also worth mentioning that while Black Panther came only third over the weekend (beaten by A Casa Tutti Bene's opening and 50 Shades Freed's 2nd weekend), Captain Marvel has eaten all the (weak) competition and stands among the other releases like a giantess.

CM Fri looking around 40% increase on Thu , so should be just over  700k mark

Since CM is just too ahead of Black Panther and Aquaman was released during Christmas holidays, I'm starting to compare it to Venom, which grossed 600K OD, 3.7M OW and 8.5M total.

 

Venom

Thu > 603K

Friday > 700K (+16%)

Saturday > 1295K (+85%)

Sunday > 1000K (est) (-23%) (3.72M OW)

 

I totally expect CM to increase by more than 90% today and drop just 15% on Sunday, as it's more family friendly. 4.5M projected 4-day opening.

Weekend was up 9.4% from the same weekend last year. 2019 losing to 2018 by 9.2%.

 

Not a single drop above 50% in the top 10. Saturday and Sunday recovered greatly (granted, when we're talking about films with 50K admissions over the whole weekend, that's not too difficult).

 

Captain Marvel has a great opening, Could have had a better IM, but at least it managed to pass the 4M mark over the 4-day weekend.

Comparisons:

Infinity War: 6.1M opening (9.05M over the 5-day frame) > 18.8M finish

Black Panther: 2.35M (2.8 5-day) > 7.2M finish

Venom > 3.7M (4-day opening) > 8.5M finish

Thor: Ragnarock: 3.0M (3.55 5-day) > 8.8M finish

Guardians of the Galaxy 2: 2.2M (3.75 6-day) > 7.1M finish

Spider Man: Homecoming: 2.65M (4-day opening) > 8.6M finish

Civil War: 4.7M (5.8M 5-day) > 11.29M finish

 

Using Venom and Civil War's multipliers, Captain Marvel will miss the 10M mark. However, competition is rather weak, so I guess it will eventually get there. Aquaman's 10.8M gross, though, looks out of reach.

 

Great again for Green Book, much better drop than the one Shape of Water experienced after its post-Oscar win boost. One more good hold and it may beat Captain Marvel's total. Amazing.

Mediocre-to-disastrous for all openers (a couple of them weren't even able to enter the top 10!).

Dragon Ball: Broly went from #1 last weekend to #11 (270K gross). Frontloaded as hell!

 

Next weekend: Boy Erased, Escape Room, The Hate U Give, A Dog's Way Home and a couple of Italian products. Captain Marvel will easily repeat.
