Business cut in half by the end of CinemaDays, but the return to normal ticket prices allowed most movies to experience some slight increases over Thursday. Five Feet Apart is once again one of the strongest performers.

 

With bad weather and the inflated Thursday we may see some nice holds. Dumbo should drop in the mid-low 20s.

 

Captain Marvel now basically locked to reach a double-digit total.

Looks like they're trying to reverse the trend. This year we have this new project of "rebuilding" Cinecittà, we have at least 2 CinemaDays (the second one being in the summer), and the effort to start turning summer into a theater-friendly season (the ads for this are before the start of every damn film and every damn showing).

So far, 2019 stands in disaster territory, but considering it's been a very weak start of the year for pretty much every country, it doesn't look that worrying. Plenty of room to grow.

 

Problem is - the mid-grosser are vanishing. A few years ago you could find about 30 movies between 550K and 850K admissions. This season we only have 11 of them, and we're into the 8th month already. In Usa something similar is happening (grosses becoming more polarized), but the biggies there are really big (top 3 last year combined for almost 2 billions) - in Italy, aside from Bohemian Rhapsody, we haven't had a movie passing 2M admissions (Cinetel numbers) since ...Infinity War?

Weekend was up (OMG!!!) 57.8% (OMG!!!!!!!) from the same weekend last year. 2019 losing to 2018 by 8.70%.

 

Dumbo did great, thanks to bad weather, CinemaDays boosting its Thursday, competition being weak...and apparently some nice WOM. At this point it's comfortably ahead of The Jungle Book at the same point of the run:

 

Jungle Book: 2.7M (-10%), 6.50M cume

 

Since JB made 10.4 millions and its following legs were nothing more than solid, I'd say the lead Dumbo built should be enough not only to beat Mowgli, but also to reach the top of the yearly chart (currently lead by Ralph 2 at 10.83 millions). It will also enter the top 10 of the season, and by kicking out of the chart another Disney tale (Nutcracker).

 

Shazam! took advantage of the weather and the lack of other options and managed a respectable opening. It will still be one of the lowest grossing SH movies ever, but at least it won't be the failure that Wonder Woman unfortunately was.

 

Five Feet Apart is becoming a very nice hit, mostly thanks to its wonderful holds (-21% and -14%). Considering the nature of this weekend, I don't think there will be another great hold next weekend, but the movie already did 3 times what it was supposed to do.

 

Disappointing openings for Us and Book Club, especially when considering the weekend was inflated. They'll be forgotten in 2 weeks.

 

Captain Marvel took advantage of the good weekend and experienced a 44% drop (vs the 65%+ one that SH movies tend to get so "late" in their run). Not enough to reach Aquaman at 10.75M, but more than enough to push it past the 10M mark...and maybe even for passing Aquaman in admissions.

 

This Thursday:

* After > 50 Shades were huge blockbusters here, I think this one will fail, but...you never know.

* Hellboy > advertised pretty heavily, but it won't do much more than beating Shazam!'s 2nd weekend

* Wonder Park > likely the usual performance for C-level animated movies (0.5/1.0M opening; 1/2M total)

 

Dumbo should threepeat.

Yes. Sunday was 16% higher than previous Sunday and just 20% lower than the FIRST Sunday of The Incredibles. Also quite close to Captain Marvel's FIRST Sunday.

Dumbo will most certainly beat Ralph in admissions, and has a solid chance at beating it in euros too.

Aquaman, Captain Marvel and Green Book will finish extremely close in admissions, but Aquaman had the advantage of ticket prices boosted by Christmas holidays.

HTTYD3 dropped around 10% for the 2nd chapter. Not bad, but the legs were disastrous (2.2x).

A little disappointing for The Mule: reception was not too good and Green Book's unexpected success overshadowed it.

While we're waiting for Endgame, some at Universal Italia are raking their brains to decide what the right Italian title for Secret Life of Pets 2 would be. So far the best options are:

 

La Vita Segreta dei Peti 2

Pets 2 - Pets di Merd

Pets 2 - Ancor sti Chezz di Pets

Pets 2 - Solo Per Petsenti
