Gokai Red
Lately, whenever worldwide box office figures are being discussed, I often see people say things like "China to the rescue" or "overseas picking up the slack." It is true though; a very large percentage of a movie's (or at least modern blockbusters) gross usually comes from just the North American, Chinese and Japanese box office. So that got me interested in what the standings would be if we took out these three markets' grosses. And so I took the liberty of figuring out, to the best of my ability, every 400m+ grosser outside the three aforementioned markets and wanted to share. Hope you guys are as intrigued as I was. Also, sorry if this belongs on a different subforum or anything. All releases of movies are counted in their totals. 1. BadAtGender
It might be interesting to construct a chart that removes the top three markets for each individual movie. That would give a better sense for which films play broadly outside of their dominance areas, regardless of which specific areas those are. Incarnadine
It makes a huge difference for Frozen. Yes, but every market has a movie that massively over performs. Just look at Skyfall in the UK, at 161m it is nearly double the next biggest market outside North America. Same goes for Transformers: DOTM in China, at 165m it was nearly 100m higher than the next biggest overseas market. Edit- I just realized Mamma Mia is probably a better example than Skyfall for the UK, i did 132m in the UK, more than 3.5x the next biggest overseas market at 39m and not for from the domestic total of 144m.
