Fifty Shades very weak in Japan, another good reason to love this country....

It's a stupid comment. I'm absolutely not interested in 50 Shades in itself, only its BO, but Japan also has weird or crappy movies which would bomb abroad and still we don't think we're superior..They're not interested in this movie for cultural reasons, they just can't understand it because it's very far from what Japan is in terms of love relationships and sex, they didn't say 'OMG it's crappy I won't watch that", no it's just a cultural deterrent.

Just to help you remembering : Japan was allowing the possession of child porn contents until a few years ago (under the US pressure they had to stop this), and most of Japanese fans of J-Pop idols such as the band AKB (most of these girls are under 20) are mostly men older than 40.

I like Japan but stop idealizing it like this in terms of taste, they're not superior or don't have better tastes, they're just different and also have their flaws and crappy products like anywhere else, you just don't see that.

For a stupid comment here is a reply even more stupid. No country in the world has only positive or negative aspects. Nobody ever said that Japan is perfect. In fact I like the Japanese box office and of course the dogs Akita in the same way I hate other aspects of the Japanese people.

Fifty Shades Of Grey generated an estimated $158m from 58 territories at the weekend via Universal to generate the biggest ever international launch for an R-rated or equivalent film. The worldwide tally already stands at $239.7m.

UNIVERSAL PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

The thunderous opening salvo scored number one debuts virtually across the board and obliterated the previous $117m mark set by The Matrix Revolutions back in 2003. This was also Universal’s second best opening weekend behind Fast & Furious 6 on $160.3m.

Saturday’s (February 14) $55.1m overtook $46.2m set by the sixth Fast film to secure Universal’s biggest single day at the international box office.

Universal claimed 60% of film-goers saw Fifty Shades Of Grey this weekend as the smash S&M romance set all-time opening weekend records in 11 territories including Argentina, new Universal marks in 30 and best-ever debuts for a film rated R or equivalent in 31.

The studio reported a company best $21.1m (£13.6m) in the UK from 586 venues in what was also the biggest February debut, the ninth biggest industry launch and the biggest opening weekend for a film rated 15 or 18.

France generated $12m from 785 locations for a Universal record, while Germany produced $15.2m from 741 for the studio’s second biggest debut and a new February mark.

Italy generated $9.1m from 530 for a studio and R-rated record; Russia $10.5m from 1,105 for a Universal and 16+ and/or 18+ record; and Spain $7.9m from 398 for new February and 18+ marks.

Fifty Shades Of Grey tore through Latin America, grossing $8.9m in Brazil from 550 for a studio and 16+ record, $8.1m in Mexico from 667 for Universal’s third best debut and a record C (R-rated) opening, and $3.8m in Argentina from 162 for that new industry high-water mark.

Australia generated $8.6m from 277 for record February, MA or R and non-holiday Universal debuts, while the Philippines delivered $2.2m from 85 for R-18 and February non-local marks. New Zealand produced $1.1m from 90 for a record February and R-rated debut.

There are five more territories to go including Trinidad this week, South Korea on February 26, the UAE and other Middle East markets on March 5 and India, where the date has not been finalised.
