Spoiler

The "Worldwide", "Domestic", and "OS Total" show the original unadjusted gross. The "Tracked" column shows the unadjusted gross in territories that have individual tracking and therefore can be adjusted based on their exchange rates. To adjust the untracked gross, I take a weighted average of the USD exchange rate in the tracked territories, with the weight determined by the proportion of overall gross from those territories. This is just an approximation, but one that I hope is more accurate than no adjustment at all. The "OS Adj" column shows the adjusted OS total combining the tracked and untracked OS gross. The "WW Adj" column combines the adjusted OS total with the original domestic total. All figures are in US$ millions.

Great job as always :)

But just a suggestion. Would not be more clear to order the new table by the new WW gross instead with the original? Just saying...

Hmmm. Honestly, I didn't think about that, it's listed by original WW because that's the order I add new films to the table for the most part, and it's pretty trivial for me to sort using a different column in the Excel file when I want to.

I just added a table sorting by new WW gross instead of original, in a spoiler tag (for now, anyway) so that the post isn't too large.

I just suggested it to know what would be the real order of the WW list with the ER adjusting. But please, do it as you want. I do not pretend to change anything :)

Awesome list as always. I know you're busy but could you do the same list and add inflation to it? I'm waiting with baited breath for the inflation adjusted list on page 6 to be updated with this years titles plus the original Jungle Book and the other movies you wanted to include.  Not to mention updating the WW list adjusted by inflation without China figures and adding a 10% of 3D for 2D films list as well. But thanks a lot Peludo and now Jason for adding actual analysis to the boxoffice forums and not just constant sports team bickering about my movie is better than yours, because of its gross, nonsense.

I love this project, but I've had a thought about the requirement of constant bookkeeping. Because the exchange rates are always in flux, the numbers constantly need to be updated. That's useful if we're comparing to brand new films, but it feels like a lot of excess work.

What if instead we just picked a baseline exchange rate time? Peludo did some work of that by comparing films that, say, had Avatar's exchange rate instead of more current ones. And, actually, since it is the biggest WW film, using Avatar might not be so bad. It establishes a clear baseline and there's a historical reason for doing it.

I think if this were done, by converting all the films to what their gross would be in the exchange rates of December 2009/January 2010 (say, January 1, 2010?), it would  mean that once a film's release is finished, it's data can be static in the table, and then the only work that would need to be done would be for new films as they are released or for older films as information about their grosses is found, and then it's just converting by rolling back the exchange rates to that point (and, again, it might even be easier since we can just save a historical archive of the exchange rates of that point in time.)

Or am I not understanding the process that Peludo and Jason are doing for their calculations? It's possible I'm entirely off base in this. It wouldn't necessarily answer the "how big would x film be if it was released right now?" question, but we could see things in the Avatar Exchange Rate Index, so to speak, which ultimately would be just as useful if we're primarily looking at the "what film was bigger" question.

I can't speak towards Peludo's methods, but it's actually extremely trivial for me to update the current exchange rate. I have one master column of current exchange rates that when updated instantly updates every single other film in the spreadsheet. I can pretty much do any date that someone is interested in, as long as it's after 2002-ish. Further back than that it gets more challenging to produce accurate numbers, because of spotty availability of currency data, as well as the changeover to the Euro.

I actually could update the master list more often, but day-to-day fluctuations aren't very meaningful. I've decided on every two weeks-ish only because if I did it less often than that there's a risk I'd forget about it completely.

As @Jason has said, it is easy for me to change the ER. I have just to collect the current ER (or whenever ER) and change one single column. That is maybe 5 minutes. I do not have to recalculate everything again ;)

To adjust with current ER is precisely to give a better view of the magnitude of each film with the current context (if we do not take into account inflation, of course). And people tend to forget very quickly and just live present. We live in a YA society. For that reason I think it is more useful to know that with today ER Civil War would had beaten IM3 than if we say that if Civil War had had 2013's ER it would had made about 1.3b. Although that is just my opinion. I can give lists using certain ER and if some of you prefer it, I can fix a historical moment (as Avatar release being the biggest film ever). We can do it as people prefer.

I've managed to find ticket price data for a total of 57 countries (excluding US + Canada) that account for about 96% of overseas box office gross. The data I have mostly goes as far back as 2005, there are a handful of markets that go back further than that, but not enough to be useful for the purposes of box office adjustment. Data has been compiled from multiple sources, for many countries I have calculated the average ticket price by dividing the total box office gross by the total number of admissions.

Average ticket prices are shown below in US$, but in some cases I have converted from local currency using the average exchange rate for that year. For countries where I have both US$ and local currency figures available, conversion using the average rate for the year gives figures that agree to within 1%.

I have data from 1998-2004 for a limited set of countries, this data is shown below in local currency (I have no need to convert it for reasons explained in the following post).

Quote
Country 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004
Australia $7.87 $8.00 $8.41 $8.88 $9.13 $9.62 $9.91
China ¥13.32 ¥13.50 ¥14.00 ¥5.33 ¥8.27 ¥8.55 ¥11.19
France € 5.38 € 5.36 € 5.39 € 5.45 € 5.59 € 5.74 € 5.82
Germany € 5.46 € 5.42 € 5.41 € 5.55 € 5.86 € 5.70 € 5.70
Italy € 4.96 € 5.15 € 5.24 € 5.30 € 5.58 € 5.56 € 5.68
Japan ¥1,264 ¥1,263 ¥1,262 ¥1,226 ¥1,224 ¥1,252 ¥1,240
South Korea ₩5,149 ₩5,230 ₩5,609 ₩5,861 ₩6,018 ₩6,003 ₩6,287
Spain € 3.58 € 3.78 € 3.96 € 4.20 € 4.45 € 4.65 € 4.81
United Kingdom £3.70 £4.00 £4.02 £4.14 £4.29 £4.44 £4.49

This is the data I am using to adjust films in my master table by ticket price inflation. If you know of a source for data for countries not on these list (at least admissions and gross box office) let me know! For many countries I have data from 2005 to 2013 but not 2014 and 2015, so even a source with only recent data could help.

Alright, so I've added a new table with OS and WW grosses adjusted for ticket price inflation as well as exchange rates. For now I have ticket price adjusted grosses for the films in the $1B club, but I hope to complete the rest in the next couple weeks.

My method for adjusting the OS gross combines exchange rate adjustment with the ratio of the local currency ticket price at release (calculated where necessary from US$ ticket price) and the extrapolated local ticket price for 2016 (using the local rate of inflation in the past two years). My reason for combining exchange rate adjustment with local currency ticket prices rather than a simpler direct comparison between the US$ ticket prices is that exchange rates can occasionally change much faster than the rate of inflation. For example, from July to December 2014 the US dollar strengthened about 13% against a basket of currencies, which is faster than the local rate of inflation in almost all the countries I have data for. I'm using a local ticket price extrapolated to 2016 rather than 2015 prices since I think we're most interested in comparing historical grosses to films currently in release. The error introduced by extrapolation will be less than the difference between 2016 and 2015 prices. I will replace the estimated ticket prices with actual 2016 prices once data comes in early next year.

For films with spring or summer release dates, the local ticket price is simply the average ticket price for that year. For films with fall or winter releases I've used the average of the ticket prices from the preceding/following years. I think this will result in a more accurate adjustment based on patterns I've observed from closer examination of the adjusted domestic list at BOM. (If you reverse-calculate the original average ticket prices for films, releases such as Avatar have an average ticket price in between that of the preceding/following years. Spring/summer releases have an average ticket price generally reflective of the average ticket price for that year.)

The adjustment for the OS gross that is not from tracked territories or where no ticket price data is available is extrapolated from the territories where data is available. This should be more accurate than no adjustment at all, given the broad agreement with overall exchange rate and ticket price trends for films in a given year.

For films released from 1998-2004, the TP adjusted grosses are adjusted by an additional "fudge factor" that takes into account that the limited territories where data is available have a generally lower rate of inflation than those from where data is missing. This fudge factor is empirically determined by comparing adjustments using 2005 ticket prices with the limited territories from 1998-2004 and with the full data set. It is highest for films released in 2004 and lower in earlier films, due to the larger grosses from emerging markets.

Also, four films added to the table (as of October 24):

  • Titanic
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
  • Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Archived tables from October 10 (ER adjustment only), for reference purposes:

@Jason Thank you again for your hard work :)

This chart shows how hard is to reach 1 billion OS. Just 4 films would had reached today that mark (Titanic, Avatar, SW7 and F7), even less than the real 5 (JW would lose that privilege). And just another 4 would had made over 900 (JW, HP1, FOTR and ROTK). I guess that among older films just a bunch like Snow White, Gone with the Wind, 101 dalmatians, Jungle Book (1967), Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., Jurassic Park and Lion King would have chances to make it. Maybe I am forgetting some more classics but those are the only possible films that come to my mind right now.
