BOTten Tomatoes - Blank's Attempt At An Aggregate Scoring System

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I'm trying my hand at one of these. Films are balanced out by not being too high by a certain number of votes being required to avoid handicaps. If you want more details on the scoring system, just ask. Also, if I'm missing a 2013 movie you want in on this list, ask. Here's 2013:

  1. Gravity - 94%
  2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 90%
  3. Her - 90%
  4. The Wolf of Wall Street - 90%
  5. Saving Mr. Banks - 89%
  6. Frozen - 88%
  7. This is the End - 88%
  8. 12 Years a Slave - 87%
  9. Before Midnight - 87%
  10. Captain Phillips - 86%
  11. Star Trek Into Darkness - 85%

  13. The World's End - 84%
  14. Fruitvale Station - 83%

  16. Monsters University - 82%
  17. Philomena - 82%

Okay, so...

I only look at the poll. Anything else doesn't matter because it simply would take too much time to look at every single poster's grade or score.

An A is 100%

A B is 80%

A C is 60%

A D is 40%

An F is 20%

I average them all together, rounding up to the nearest thousandth, and then look at the total number of votes.

If it has less than 100 votes, I subtract 2%

If it has less than 50 votes, I subtract 5%

If it has less than 20 votes, I subtract 10%

If it has less than 15 votes, I subtract 15%

If it has less than 20 votes, I subtract 20%

Then I order them lol. Basically, I did what I've been doing for my top of the 20th Century list, but with added handicaps and for every movie I can think of in a year. Unfortunately, I'm aware this is naturally bias slightly to blockbusters, but I think it's pretty unavoidable considering the main demographic that browses these boards.

Why?

Because otherwise we have films with like 6 votes getting 94% over movies that clearly have more love on these forums. Like Nebraska has only 6 votes; it would get 90% with those 6 votes, but is it really fair to place it above The World's End or Prisoners, both of which have about 4 times the votes, but yet end at 89% and 87% respectively. Also, it allows a lower floor, since with 20% going to F films, the minimum any film could get would be 20% rather than 0%, which it would be on an actual aggregate scoring system.

It's not only biased toward blockbusters, it's biased toward recent blockbusters. What about simply not including movies under a certain threshold of votes?

This is a good point, but to be fair, I was only looking to apply this aggregate scoring to films released since this site has debuted AKA 2012 onwards. I could just ignore all films under 20 votes if that's preferred, and readjust the scoring. That would look like this then:

  1. Saving Mr. Banks - 94%
  2. Gravity - 94%
  3. This is the End - 93%
  4. 12 Years a Slave - 92%
  5. Her - 92%
  6. The Wolf of Wall Street - 92%
  7. Captain Phillips - 91%
  8. Frozen - 90%
  9. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 90%
  10. Blue Jasmine - 90%
  11. The World's End - 89%
  12. Prisoners - 87%
  13. Star Trek Into Darkness - 85%
  14. Monsters University - 84%
  15. The Croods - 83%
  16. Oblivion - 82%
  17. Fast and Furious 6 - 82%
  18. Despicable Me 2 - 82%
  19. The Conjuring - 82%
  20. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - 81%
  21. Iron Man 3 - 80%
  22. Lone Survivor - 80%
  23. American Hustle - 79%
  24. Pacific Rim - 79%
  25. Thor: The Dark World - 79%
  26. The Heat - 79%
  27. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - 78%
  28. Man of Steel - 78%
  29. World War Z - 75%
  30. Now You See Me - 75%
  31. The Wolverine - 73%
  32. The Great Gatsby - 72%
  33. Elysium - 72%
  34. White House Down - 72%
  35. Oz, the Great and Powerful - 70%
  36. Olympus Has Fallen - 69%
  37. G.I. Joe Retaliation - 57%

Sorry but this is kinda wack. I concur with Tele about having a set threshold before inclusion.

Would it be better if I went

100% - A

75% - B

50% - C

25% - D

0% - F

?

Then, I'll fix everything for the ones that have at least 20 votes. That's what I'm feeling is the best thing to do at this point lol

You don't need to find an average score. If you want to follow Rotten Tomatoes footsteps then just count the number of votes C or higher and use that percentage. And yes, I agree there should be a threshold. I was asking why so many tiers and why those numbers as they are completely arbitrary.

I'm just calling it BOTten Tomatoes because it's catchy; I'd much rather have a MetaCritic style of aggregate scoring on this forum. I'll admit they are arbitrary numbers, but it's just the way I was looking at it.

You can't use C as A positive grade
