Barnack
The idea was made to collect all in the same place the different source for movie budget that it is possible to use. By far the best one is when the movie used Louisiana tax credit and use that reference made public for taxpayer: https://fastlane.louisianaeconomicdevelopment.com/Film/FilmSearch.aspx Others: If it was shot in California since 2013, it could end up here: http://film.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/CFC-Approved-Projects-List.pdf Not close to be has good, it is only list the expenditures that qualified for a tax credit, but it can give an idea. If it was shot in the state of new-york you could find them here: https://esd.ny.gov/esd-media-center/reports?tid[]=516&keys=tax credit In New-Zealand: http://www.nzfilm.co.nz/funding/past-funding-decisions France: http://www.profession-spectacle.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/La-production-cinématographique-en-2016.pdf For example if you want to look the first John Wick, it spent 29.676 million in the state of NY alone and the TV series blue blood spent 91 million for the season 4 there: https://cdn.esd.ny.gov/Reports/2015_2016/Q1_2016_FTC_Report.pdf Do you know other good sources ? Like does Australia/Georgia/UK/Canada ever make them available to us ? Edited June 28, 2017 by Barnack
Barnack
So I'll start will all those available from the Louisiana source: In Louisiana you can see a breakdown over time of movie that were planned but never made, the total expense, the expense in Louisiana (that give an idea below/over the line cost), expense in Los Angeles too. Those budget number are the exact same used in Sony leaked accounting, so maybe they are not 100% legit, but they are audited by the state and are those that are used in studio sheet and what people use to calculate their participation bonus. Here all the movie that had a budget of 5 million or more that used the tax credit, approximative gross cost (note Invertigo ended up never being made, same for Gambit but you can see how much the studio planned to spend on them and Twilight is for 2 movie being shot at the same time). Older movie didn't used the real total cost, just the local state cost, so stuff like Green lantern were not just 118 million nor Jonah Hex 44.3, you can search for the movie title in the link above for more details. aabattery
Nice resource! I know that the NZ Film Commission has a fairly extensive database that shows how much funding they provide to particular movies. I can't find anything their showing the whole budget, but gives you an idea. Also I think it's only for New Zealand films so not the greatest resource around, but other countries might have a similar thing going on. http://www.nzfilm.co.nz/funding/past-funding-decisions Edited June 17, 2017 by aabattery
baumer
So are you saying that Breaking Dawn 2 had a budget of 247 million?

lilmac
This is fantastic. Extra 0 for the Tom Cruise movie? $1.6 billion. Hahaha
Barnack
Inspired by the recent Forbes work of finding Solo, Rogue One, Awaken, Last Jedi, company filling, using those company registered adress I went and did a quick look to try to find others registered company for a movie. Here Thor 2, under the rather obvious codename ASGARD PRODUCTIONS II: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/07596270 It seem to look like this: Spending 30.178 7 april 2011 to 31 aug 2012 69.181 31 aug 2012 to 31 jan 2013 46.319 to 31 october 2013 Movie release here 19.015 to 31 july 2014 3.249 to 31 july 2015 Tax credit received: 4.595 april 2011 to 31 aug 2012 10.809 31 aug 2012 to 31 jan 2013 6.969 to 31 october 2013 Movie release here 3.213 to 31 july 2014 0.507 to 31 july 2015 -------------------- I am not 100% sure how to read this numbers, is 100% of the expense are in those or just those eligible for the tax credits ? What are the expense after the movie release, contractant / SFX people getting paid later, people bonus, home ent material being made that have the rights for credits ? I really do not know. Regardless, that would be for Thor 2 a gross production cost of 167.942m pound with 26.093m in tax credit. Conversation ratio was around 1.6 USD for every pound around that time frame. For an about 268m gross budget and a about 225m net one. If we look at the expense just before the movie release, 233m gross budget and 197m net, that would be pratically the exact same has the first Guardian of the Galaxy made around the same time.
