December 21-23:

'Voltron' Sequel Rises

Some have waited all year. Some have waited since summer. Others have waited since the exciting releases dried out half-way through November. Theater exhibitors had been praying for its arrival ever since Thanksgiving floundered. Regardless of who they were, they knew the sluggish Holiday box office could be saved by one film and one film only: "Blood Blizzard".

Nah, just kidding, it's Voltron. To quote Katy Perry: You're gonna hear me roar.

Wether it was thanks to a starved blockbuster audience having to endure an entire month without exciting new offerings, the goodwill from the break-out smash that was "Defenders of the Universe" last year or Cookie Pictures putting all of their marketing power behind the sequel as if the studio's future was riding on it, "Voltron: Rise of Lotor" obliterated the CAYOM opening record set by "Pokémon: The Journey Begins" back in August. With positive reception and an "A" cinemascore from audiences, "Voltron" was always going to be audience's go-to choice over Christmas and it seems its prophecy has been fulfilled. Team Voltron may not always save the day in top form, but saving the box office is something they've gotten a good handle on.

  1. Voltron: Rise of Lotor - $152,682,019
  2. Spyro: Dragonheart - $13,511,792 (-48.1%)
  3. The Parvelli Reunion - $8,165,193 (-20.6%)
  4. And the Band Played On - $7,551,963 (+284.1%)
  5. Blood Blizzard - $7,309,254
  6. Flying Spaghetti Monster the Great and Holy: $3,517,248 (-49.3%)
  7. Treasure Planet - $2,227,193 (-49.3%)
  8. Midnight in the Afghan Valley - $2,103,769 (-32.5%)
  9. Storm Hunters - $2,065,976 (-49.7%)
  10. Sitting Ducks - $1,966,203 (-38.5%)

Top 10 gross: $201,100,610 (+221.1%)

December 28-30:

'Lotor' Rules New Years, 'Starcatchers' Bomb

  1. Voltron: Rise of Lotor - $102,273,106 (-33.0%)

  3. And the Band Played On - $10,775,204 (+42.7%)
  4. The Parvelli Reunion - $10,538,237 (+29.1%)
  5. Peter and the Starcatchers - $10,044,682 / $21,275,129

Me too, @Hiccup23! I’m guessing the strong critical reception and outrageous plotting is making audiences really curious. I suspect it holds quite well into January.

Me thinks it will :)

Since I am hosting the Oscars, I should stay neutral but....

Spoiler

I am rooting for you kiddo :)

Thanks Hic! @cookie is a wild card for its reception, but with the number of top 5 mentions it has, it seems like a near lock for several of the major categories, at least in terms of nominations.

Out of likes, but I think @cookie liked it. I have a feeling it will be#1 on his list ;)  He is a wild card reviewer....I hate it but live for it!

Time will tell!

But man, that was a PITIFUL holiday season. Take a 16-plex, give Voltron 5 screens and 2 for Spyro and ATBPO each, and the rest would pretty much round out the top 10 and not much more.

Everyone either saw Voltron 2 and delayed their major December stuff (uh... me) or just didn't actually finish it. This game year in general was nearly bare-minimum schedule wise despite multiple extensions. Hopefully that's cuz people were busy over the holidays.
