Xillix' Critical Hit Y4 Reviews

I'm curious how you find the plot of Marked Up Time overly complex? It's a simple three-act structure that has a B-plot in act 2 that converges with the A-plot in act 3.

To be clear, if it were a straight-up sci-fi/drama I don't think I would've minded. It's not the structure that got to me, but the fact that it has all the time travel elements (and even unusual rules about them) which, IMO, were too complex in this specific case when it's largely a comedy and tries to have it both ways in regards to mocking/underexplaining/handwaving those parts of the plot. Then it goes right ahead and tries to build the drama around it anyway.

Okay, so I've decided based on our earlier conversations to ignore the runtime numbers for review purposes. If the pacing of your writing is bad I'll still call you out on it, but the timestamp's not gonna have any influence. Revising the Pillars of Eternity review accordingly.

But if anyone pulls this on me now I'ma sic the Putty Patrol on you

@4815162342 Mass Effect coulda used another proofreading pass. Nothing huge or indecipherable but running into some missing words and swapped names which I don't expect from you.

Are you sure? I went through it before posting and caught none of that.

"The humans left once Modos did and Haliat’s realized that maybe he shouldn’t have an arms dealer on the. Alenko and I will find transport and try to catch up, but you’re on your own for now."

"Anderson and Shepard are escorted to a conference room where Anderson and several other senior Alliance staff are waiting."

Not a huge deal, was just surprised is all.

It's a stealth hint that everything bad that happens is because Anderson created a time paradox.

Yeah... see the thing is I always come up with the rules but then like I don't care to explain them. I'm someone who thinks the first half of Inception is by far the worst thing Nolan has ever done; I'd rather go along for the ride than deal with obnoxious exposition. I can respect your position tho, but don't expect me to listen to it lol

The climax is inspired by the Bring Down the Sky DLC of ME1.

Yeah I assumed that (haven't played that DLC but heard of it). I'm referring to a specific scene, really. If you read EDII you'll know it when you see it.

APRIL

Broadway Selects: SpongeBob SquarePants

"More like Broadway Scraps."

BOT_Tag_-_1_half_stars.png

Mass Effect

"The filmmakers have decided not to dive right into the grand space operatics of the games' main plot, and given that even in this introductory chapter a few elements feel somewhat inadequately-explained for newcomers this was probably a good decision. As it is, this first film plays out sort of like a Mission: Impossible in space, and it's packed with interesting characters and exciting action. Its primary drawbacks are the rather transparently obvious nature of its main twist, some confusing inconsistency in the apparent command structure of the main cast, and the fact that things can be a bit hard to keep straight when the action really gets going. Still a worthwhile franchise-starter."

Safari Trail

"It's fine, but so are the eight million identical documentaries you can watch at home for free."

Our City: Growth

"A muddled and unnecessary sequel that's still likely to entertain very young children, but is missing the charm and spark of the original."

Fair @Xillix.

The second film will also be it's own thing, with some elements tweaked in. Film 3 would be where I start to play with the actual games.

As for the "twist", it was intended to be foreshadowed. I meant it to be one of those things where the audience figured it out before the characters and the tension comes from waiting for the shoe to drop. Not sure if that affects things for you.

I mean it certainly makes more sense, though if that was the intention I would've just made it explicit earlier on. Either way I liked it well enough!

One other thing, not actually a problem but just a curiosity;

Spoiler

Why change the Cerberus logo? Fans of the games would've recognized it anyway, and non-fans still won't know what it means.

confused why you would give a filler that's literally a recorded version of a broadway show that got nominated for 12 tonys less than a generic 2.5 stars but you do you

Because I didn't like it :P

TBH I have never liked SpongeBob anyway and I personally think it's an especially poor fit for a Broadway musical, and that the taped musical is in turn a poor fit for movie theatres as a wide general release instead of like a Fathom deal. The American Theatre Wing doesn't make up my mind for me.
