Big milestone day

"Lion King" just continues to roar, Though it didn't sell as many tickets as the original domestically, it clearly putting up huge dollars 25 years later.   "Hobbs & Shaw" numbers would be just fine if they didn't drop a boatload on that budget.   Therefor these domestic numbers are looking a little lukewarm to me.  This was a spinoff not a movie in the main franchise so I wasn't expected as Big as F&F films but lowest domestic total since "Tokyo Drift" isn't really where I saw it.  Worldwide is still pretty healthy for the franchise with China on the horizon should finish 5th overall WW in the franchise.   They should of kept the budget much more manageable than what's been reported.

How many of these animated movies are nosediving? Angry Birds opened to 72M and now nit even half of that. Same to SLOP 2 that was so awful

I think it has a lot to do with the rise of Netflix/lack of need or want for a sequel/WOM. 

 

Excluding TS4 and likely F2, Dragon 3 escaped the curse of nosediving due to good WOM as well as strong marketing and a likeable franchise. Lego 2 suffered due to overkill of the franchise, Pets 2 was trapped between Aladdin and TS4 and wasn’t appealing enough, and Angry Birds 2 is the aftermath of a competitive summer.
