Indian films in USA.

Recommended Posts

I guess over $1.2mn will be enough for Saaho to be #1 on its opening day. The buzz with trade is that it will open to $1.5-2mn.

No Indian film have ever officially topped a single day at Indian boxoffice. Baahubali 2 topped Thursday, but it was rolled into Friday, where it was less than Fast 8.

So history await folks.

Chal Mera Putt is now the highest grossing Punjabi movie OS.

BOI Article :-

Chal Mere Putt is the all time highest Punjabi grosser in Overseas as it beat the figures of Chaar Sahibzaade. The film will gross around £400k in United Kingdom which has never happened for the regular Punjabi film. Only Chaar Sahibzaade did almost £800k as it was a religious film. The regular Punjabi films dont touch £300k in United Kingdom.

In Gulf it has taken Punjabi films to a new level as it looks for a $300k finish and crossed the 1 million dhiram mark which is unheard of Punjabi films. This is the huge plus for the film, the film had Pakistani artists in leading roles which has probably accounted for the huge numbers in UK and Gulf. Overall this summer has seen 3 huge Punjabi grossers overseas with Chal Mere Putt, Ardaas Karaan and Shadaa all setting huge benchmarks and expanding the markets.

The downer is that beside Shadaa the other two did ordinary business in India which is reflected in the worldwide business of the three. Shadaa is at 52.50 crore while Ardaas Karaan is at 31.25 crore and Chal Mere Putt stands at almost 30 crore. Carry On Jatta 2 and Shadaa are the two Punjabi films to gross over 50 crore worldwide and Chaar Sahibzaade is the 40 crore plus grosser. The top ten Punjabi grossers overseas are as follows.

1. Chal Mera Putt - $3,600,000

2. Chaar Sahibzaade - $3,570,000

3. Ardaas Karaan - $2,700,000

4. Shadaa - $2,650,000

5. Angrez - $2,580,000

6. Manje Bistre - $2,490,000

7. Carry On Jatta 2 - $2,350,000

8. Love Punjab - $2,260,000

9. Sajjan Singh Rangroot - $2,070,000

10. Sardaarji - $2,020,000

Also surprised by Mission Mangal's performance. 3M+ lifetime is a very big number for Akshay movie. I expect Good News to do even better considering the OS friendly theme of the movie. May become the 1st Akshay movie to do 10M+ OS.

Toilet & Padman are over $10mn with China.

Singh is Kingg is still Akshay's highest in USA. This may beat it to $3.5mn full run.

I saw Mission Mangal last weekend, and while I was mildly entertained, I wasn't impressed artistically. The characters and situations seemed cookie-cutter and there was a lot of gratuitous Indian national puffery.

Of recent Indian films I've seen, I would put it 4th behind Bharat and Oh Baby (both quite good, IMO) and maybe slightly above Super 30, which had similar flaws.
