Weekend estimates (Screendaily, Deadline)

  • STB is #1 but with a softer than expected $1.5M OW, including previews, less than STID $2.6M opening but better than the first movie's $1M. Reckon it will still be lower in lc and admissions, and it won't be able to reach ID's $6.7M total.
  • SS up to $27.1M total. Probably would have crossed $30M with a Cinemex release.
  • Don't think any other movie made more than $1M. Updated details coming soon/tomorrow.

And the weekend actuals are here. Wasn't expecting such a drop for STB, including previews; doesn't bod well and may miss $5M total.  Mechanic Resurrection is a nice surprise, managing a quite respectable $1M OW. But the real shock is seeing SS and SLOP still selling lots of tickets, even if they're cheaper! The Squad passes the 500M lc threshold while the Pets have a chance to hit the 11M audience. Meanwhile, Bourne deflates and Ben Hur is out of the Top 10.

Weekly figures. Nothing remarkable, STB is totally flat, probably getting ready for a potentially big weekend! Today Friday is a national holiday and there are several openers, among them local comedy No Manches Frida which has already gtrossed close to $8M in the US, and Don't Breath which should do well based on the performance of recent horror movies.  Also opening are Pete's Dragon, and Bridget Jones Baby.

On the all time charts, SLOP passed IA5 in lc  (#27) and IO in audience (#15), becoming the #6 film of the year; and SS jumped over HT2 in audience (#23).

Weekend estimates (Screendaily, Deadline). ER in an all-time low.

  • No Manches Frida is #1, $2.9M OW.
  • Pete's Dragon opens at #2 with a strong $2.1M
  • Bridget Jones's Baby had the biggest opening of the franchise.
  • $1.2M OW for Don't Breathe (bigger than The Visit).
  • STB added $718K for a paltry $2.6M total.

Weekend official numbers. For the first time in a long time, the Top 4 are new entries! No manches Frida (a remake of the German comedy Fack Ju Goethe) easily grabs the #1 spot, with the best OW for a local movie since Que culpa tiene el niño earlier this year. Pete's Dragon has a solid opening, cementing Disney's grasp on the family market. Don't Breathe is #3, not sure if it'll be able to replicate Lights Out success. Then, at 4, it's Bridget Jones's Baby, best opener in an otherwise unremarkable franchise in this market.  In the holdovers, STB deflates and somehow SS and SLOP keep selling tickets in their 7th and 8th week.

Numbers up to Thursday. No Manches Frida with a decent hold, the rest are just meh. It should be a close battle with Storks for the weekend's crown. Other openers are Magnificent 7, Bastille and a local movie about the 1985 Earthquake in Mexico City.

Weekend estimates (Screendaily, Comscore):

  • Animated movies usually open on top here (unless they are really, really boring or cheap looking) and Storks is not the exception, with $2.4M.
  • No Manches Frida reaches a $6.5M total after a $1.8M weekend.
  • Don't Breathe: $705K second weekend for a $2.4M total.

Weekend official figures. Stork opened at #1, with about the same gross in lc as other similar "low-tier" animated movies. No manches Frida was a close second and should keep its momentum for a while. The other debuts (Bastille, Magnificent 7, Light Between Oceans) were lackluster, none of them reaching $500K. The big story, however, is Pete's Dragon massive 70% drop, the second steepest of the year for a 2nd weekend, after Warcraft.

Weekend estimates (Screendaily, Exhibitor Relations):

  • Miss Peregrine's #1 with a really good $3.8M, higher than Oz.
  • Storks has a $1.5M second weekend for a $4.8M total.
  • Deepwater Horizon cannot reach the million, a so-so $900K OW.

That seems like a good hold for Storks, no?

Really good hold for the Storks, <35% and now #32 of the year. Same as Frida, which breaks into the Top 20 of the year and is now the second highest grossing local movie. On the other hand, Pete's Dragon had another horrendous drop, and Magnificent 7 and Bastille couldn't find their niche.  Was expecting more from Blair Witch, even if it's not pulling big business anywhere else. Miss Peregrine OW may be in the Top 15 of 2016 in lc/audience, need to dig out the archives...

Weekend numbers. Local movie Treintona, soltera and fabulosa easily climbs to the top with a solid $2.4M OW; meanwhile, No manches Frida spends another week in the Top 5 while crossing the 200M lc threshold, and both Miss Peregrine and the Storks drop about 44%.  On the other hand, two new animated movies that don't conform to the "family" parameters have poor openings: Kubo with $560K and Sausage Party with $245K.
