FREEDOM DAY

Studio: Phoenix Fire Pictures; Blumhouse Productions

Director: Levan Gabriadze

Genre: Horror/Thriller/Sci-Fi

Release Date: July 3rd, Y10

Theater Count: 2879

Rating: PG-13

Format: 2D, 3D

Budget: $3 million

Runtime: 97 minutes

Cast:

- Shelley Hennig as Mary Hanier

Cinematography Note: The film is shot entirely on an Apple Vision Pro, from the first person of its protagonist.

Plot Summary: A month before July 4th, a major tech enterprise releases the HyperVision, a virtual reality headset that immediately takes America by storm. Mary Hanier (Hennig), a college student who is on Summer break, buys one for herself, days before her whole family (but her) die in a freak car crash. One month later, on the days before Independence Day, the whole world is hooked to the HyperVision, Mary included, with which she spends the days engaging with VR apps to withhold from grieving. One night, she starts getting strange messages and notifications on her headset - and soon, she begins seeing horrifying humanoid figures trying to "pull her down to the floor", for what seems like to kill her, nearly doing so. Mary, terrified, researches what's happening and realizes that what appears to be a malfunction, is actually the terrifying reality that the headset connects with avatars from dead people, and those are the avatars of her deceased family. As she's confronted with further encounters with the killer avatars, she discovers a VR internet subworld inhabited by avatars of dead people all over the world, and we realize that some of them can interact with the real world. Mary also realizes that her family died because they were wearing HyperVisions while driving, dying in a distraction-related accident. Upon hearing this, Mary realizes that the avatars are trying to have her join them in death, and she accepts that the VR creation is going to be the death of her if she keeps using it. She tries dumping it in the trash, but it seems stuck to her head, and the avatars continue chasing her until she dies (jumpscare galore). She finally runs outside, where other people are seen struggling with their own HyperVisions, and sets herself on fire in front of the HyperVision-producing tech company headquarters, hoping that her suicide will wake the company up. But in actuality, the "suicide" actually just destroyed the VR set, as she is still intact and alive in the outside world, while hundreds of other people do what she did and destroy their own HyperVisions. The film ends with Mary lighting up a firework, preparing to set the tech company HQ on fire, in celebration of Independence Day.

Studio: Phoenix Fire Pictures; Troublemaker Studios; Electronic Arts

Based On: Burnout, by Criterion Games

DirectorRobert Rodriguez

Genre: Action

Release Date: August 28th, Y10

Theater Count: 3119

Rating: PG-13

Format: 2D, 3D

Budget: $42 million

Runtime: 100 minutes

Cast:

  • Becky G as Candy
  • Gabriel Chavarria as Danny
  • Gina Rodriguez as Leticia
  • Demián Bechir as Professor Rodríguez

Previous Movie's Box Office:

  • Burnout (01/11/Y3) - $24,495,720 OW / $65,055,938 DOM / $302,698,796 WW

Presentation Style: The film has vibrant colors and cool graphic novel-like edits, resembling a mix between Sin City (but brighter-looking) and Speed Racer.

Plot Summary: In the previous film, Candy (Becky G) and Danny (Chavarria), a young college sophomore couple, was drawn by a suspicious group of people into an illegal street racing business by math teacher Rodríguez (Bechir). Rodríguez forced Danny to take the spot of his former top driver, who had been paralyzed in a brutal crash, and be his new #1, but eventually turned on him and had him nearly killed, until Candy came in to save him. They were caught by the cops in the end, but Rodríguez never appeared.

Five years later, Candy is bailed out. She tries to reconnect with the outside world and meet with her older sister, Leticia (Rodriguez), a cop. However, soon, she finds out that Professor Rodríguez, who had been on the run all these years, has used someone to kidnap Danny, who's still serving in prison. Candy, against her better wishes, decides to take the wheel again and go save Danny, while Leticia agrees to keep Candy off the watch of the police, under the condition that she causes no civilian deaths. Soon, she finds some of the people that know where Rodríguez has Danny held up, and tries to melee her way inside, but she finds that Danny is being held elsewhere. Having denounced her location, she flees, and a dangerous car chase ensues, which ends up causing havoc in the middle of a city, with a massive twenty vehicle crash killing dozes and clogging up the town intersections. Knowing Candy is involved, Leticia forces herself to set chase on her sister. Meanwhile, a now undercover Candy enters an illegal race hosted by Rodríguez's men, and upon winning, she forces them at knifepoint to tell them where Danny is. She races there and soon enters in contact with where Danny is supposed to be - but upon fighting guards and finding his cell, she discovers that Danny is actually in talks with Rodríguez. Danny, who had still been infatuated with the job of being a top racer, decided to continue his crime life now that he's set free, and Rodríguez gave him a new chance. The deal shocks Candy, who realizes that Danny has sold his soul and hasn't learned anything. She flees the locale, but is captured by Leticia, who has no choice but to take her in. After an emotional moment, Candy reveals to Leticia that her boyfriend, who has kidnapped by Professor Rodríguez, is now in tandem with him again, and promises that she'll bring him in, if they let her go. Leticia, unsure if doing the right thing or not, still feels too much for her sister not to agree, and the two vow never to mistrust the other again. Candy admits she's learned that some people will just never change, and it is up to her to actually do the correct thing if that other person in your life isn't interested. Candy leads the cops to Rodríguez's place, and there, he and Danny have things worked out to continue their illegal street racing business, with Danny winning as many races as possible. When confronted with the police, Rodríguez tells everyone to get in their cars and leave, but Candy sneaks on Danny and talks to him one last time, begging to him to see the light. He seems conflicted, but ends up refusing, telling Candy that while the sex was good, he really knows she just wants to think she's a better racer than he is. Like in the first movie, she sucker-punches him, and the two have a melee fight. Leticia comes to Candy's rescue as Danny overpowers her, but Danny escapes on foot. Candy and Leticia get in a car after Danny's, and the two cars are in a fervorous one-on-one street race. Leticia nearly causes a crash and injures some bystanders. Danny, seeing the deaths of people, begins to feel remorse again. Suddenly, as Candy takes the wheel from the guilty Leticia and drives perfectly, Danny wrecks his car. He then lets himself get caught, which he is, admitting that he's gone too far. Leticia also turns herself in, but the cops deem that she and Candy have done enough good by catching up to Danny, that they're let go. In the end, Candy and Leticia reunite once more, while knowing that Rodríguez is still out in the loose. Their last adventure will take them to Paradise City, where they must catch Rodríguez once and for all.

Plot Summary

The film opens with a minivan driving down a suburban road. Inside the minivan, Beth Spencer is staring dejectedly out the window. A 10-year-old girl with shoulder-length brown hair and glasses, she soon reveals the reason she is so upset; her family is moving to a new house. She is especially upset about having to switch schools, and make new friends, something she has never been good at doing.

When they pull into the driveway of the new house, Beth immediately makes her way up to the bedroom and flops down on the bed, grumbling to herself about how unfair it is that she had to move away. Her 8-year-old brother Kyle comes to the knocks at her door, offering to let her read one of his comic books, and Beth tells him not to bother her. That night at dinner, Beth eats very little, and goes back to her room. Once there, she sees a strange creature sitting on her bed, resembling a cross between an owl and a hamster. Beth freaks out at the sight of the creature, and thinks it's a prank of some kind, and isn't reassured at all when it speaks to her, introducing itself as Me-Toh and stating that it is a Furby. Beth notes that she seems to be able to understand him even though he isn't speaking English, and Me-Toh tells her this is because she is special; only a few children in the world can connect with Furbies. She hears her mother approaching, and hides Me-Toh under the covers, letting him out again when the coast is clear. That night, Beth turns on the light on her phone and continues talking to Me-Toh, who explains what Furbies do. According to him, Furbies come from a magical land in the sky, and come to Earth to bond with children who are truly imaginative, kindhearted, and optimistic. Beth replies that there must be some kind of mistake, since she isn't feeling very optimistic at all.

The next day is Beth's first day at her new school. The other students are unable to see Me-Toh, but they still avoid her. All of them, that is, except for a shy, awkward boy named Jesse. He introduces himself to her at lunch, and she notes that he seems to be sitting away from everyone else. Beth asks if he just moved here too, and if that's why he's by himself, and Jesse explains that he actually has autism, which makes it hard for him to socialize. He also notices Me-Toh, and reveals that he, too, has a Furby friend. Jesse's Furby friend introduces herself as Hoo-vah. Beth's parents notice that she seems less sad, and congratulate her for overcoming the stress of moving. She doesn't tell them that her friendship with Jesse and the Furbies has made her feel much more fulfilled. However, she notices Kyle doing some strange things. That night, as the family settles down to watch a movie (Attack of the Clown Zombies, per Beth's request) the television cuts out. Mr. Spencer  blames Kyle for this, but he denies having anything to do with it. Mr. Spencer refuses to listen, and sends Kyle to his room.

Beth asks Me-Toh if he knows what's going on, and Me-Toh explains that it's the work of a Gnarlie. Beth goes on to ask what a Gnarlie is, and Me-Toh uses the lens on his forehead to project a picture of one. Gnarlies, according to Me-Toh, are the "evil" counterparts of Furbies; hairy, mischievous creatures who enjoy pulling pranks and making messes. While Furbies bond with children who are kind and selfless, Gnarlies bond with children who are rude and mean, and love to cause trouble. Hoping for answers, Beth calls Jesse and tells him to meet her outside her bedroom window. Hoo-Vah affirms what Me-Toh said, that a Gnarlie is most likely responsible, and invites them to come to a secret clearing in a nearby forest. Beth protests that she isn't allowed to leave without permission, but climbs out the window and follows them anyway. They arrive at the clearing, and discover that it is full of Furbies. Most of them are the same size as Me-Toh and Hoo-Vah, but one in the center of the clearing is much bigger than the rest and wears a crown.

Me-Toh states that this is the Furby King, and he rarely shows himself. Long ago, he explains, everyone knew about Furbies, but as time went on people were less willing to believe in magic, and Furbies stopped coming to Earth. But the Gnarlies, the Furbies' "evil" counterparts, still do. Beth asks the Furby King what this has to do with her and Jesse, and he explains that the Furbies have a prophecy that one day, two kind-hearted children will once again befriend Furbies, and allow them to return to Earth. Jesse remarks that this is a lot to take in, and Me-Toh concedes that "I never said it would be easy."  Meanwhile, Kyle is in his room, complaining that even though he tried to cheer Beth up, she hasn't talked to him for the past few days, and he feels like she hates him now. We then see who he's talking to-- a pair of Gnarlies named Splat and Smudge. Kyle mentions that tomorrow is the day Beth has to give a report for school, and he vows to make it "a presentation she'll never forget". The two Gnarlies giggle.

The next day, Beth arrives at school with Me-Toh in her backpack. She greets Jesse in the hallway, and he reminds her that she has to give a report for class that day. No sooner does she begin to give the report, though, than a bucket of water materializes from nowhere and dumps itself onto her head. Beth is infuriated and humiliated, with everyone except Jesse laughing at her. At lunch, after drying off, she speaks to Jesse, Me-Toh, and Hoo-Vah again, and asks if they think a Gnarly did that too. Me-Toh agrees, but asks if she has any idea who it was bonded to. Beth hesitates for a moment, realizing that since she's such a new student, most of the kids don't know her well enough to have any kind of grudge against her. Then it gradually dawns on her that Kyle must be the one responsible. However, as Beth, Jesse, Me-Toh, and Hoo-Vah frantically search for Kyle, they realize that many of the children at the school have Gnarlies accompanying them. And many of these children-- ranging from kindergartners to fifth-graders-- are leaving their classrooms and congregating on the playground. Beth and her friends follow them, and notice that all the kids with Gnarlies are surrounding none other than Kyle, who has apparently declared himself their leader. Accompanying him are Splat and Smudge, who are laughing madly and seem eager to cause more mischief. At Splat's command, the Gnarlies proceed to trash the school-- tearing down posters, flushing things down the toilets, throwing food around the cafeteria, and in general causing chaos, much to the confusion of the teachers and staff, who can't see them.

Beth and Jesse head back to the clearing in the woods, only to find it deserted, with almost all of the Furbies gone and an ominous black cloud overhead. The Furby King is still there, and he pleads with Beth to stop the Gnarlies before it is too late, and the world is overrun by negativity and spite. Before she can say anything else, the Furby King is sucked into the cloud, and Beth asks Me-Toh if there's anything left to do. Jesse suggests that they should go back and fight the Gnarlies, and Beth is initially eager to do this. They go back to the schoolyard, where the other kids and their Gnarly companions are still causing chaos. When they notice how many of them there are, Beth starts to have second thoughts, and Splat and Smudge taunt her. Me-Toh, Hoo-Vah, and Jesse ask her what she's going to do, and she replies, "Something I should have done a long time ago."

Beth approaches Kyle, and apologizes to him, telling him that she wasn't trying to be mean when she stopped talking to him. Kyle accepts her apology, and when he does, the Gnarlies begin to transform. They start to glow, and when the light subsides, they are revealed to have turned into Furbies themselves. Kyle admits that he let Beth's apparent rejection of him get to his head, and he apologizes for the trouble he caused. The Furbies rejoin their new human friends.

That night at dinner, Beth and Kyle have invited Jesse over, and the three of them, together with their Furby friends, discuss what their next adventure will be. The scene zooms out away from the house, and pans out into Furbyland high in the sky, where the Furby King watches them contentedly.

In a mid-credits scene, a Gnarly opens up Beth's closet at night and laughs maniacally.

The entire house heats up to 125 degrees and all the windows burst. The doors slam open and shut wildly. The paint on the wall begins to melt away. The lights begin to fad in and out. The entire house shakes and begins to fall apart. Michelle screams and runs outside. Tim and the priest continue to stay inside. Suddenly a voice roars at them to stop. The priest is then hurled across the room. The priest rises and tells Tim that the demon is to powerful and the priest runs out of the house and leaves. The house grows spookily silent. Tim tells Michelle to come back in. That night the regular haunting happens. Suddenly the door flies open. And a breezy enters in. The sheets on the bed rustle. Tim tells Michelle that something is in the bed. Michelle leaps out and tries to turn on the light but is doesn’t work. Suddenly the bed sheet covers Tim. Tim struggles to get the sheet off of him. Michelle tries to help Tim but is thrown by an invisible force. The demon suddenly stops and leaves with a rush of air and a loud bang. Tim emerges from the sheets and asks Michelle if she is ok. She says that she is. The next night, Michelle says that she has to go to the bathroom. She turns on all the lights. A horrific blood curdling scream is heard. Tim leaps out of the bed and dashes into the bathroom. Minutes later he darts out and rushes down the stairs. We see Michelle her body contorted like in a spider walk fashion.. She snarls in anger. She leaps on top of Tim and tears out his throat. She noisily devours his flesh. She then looks up with blood dripping from her mouth. She screams. Becoming human like again, she walks over and opens the attic door. Walking up into the attic she smiles seductively as she slices her throat. She falls over dead. It is quiet for a few minutes. Suddenly she flies up and screams a chilling scream. The screen goes black.

Plot Summary: In the first Monster Bug Wars film, set in a futuristic Earth colony, Joanne and her boyfriend, Vic (Fran Kranz), unmasked the evildoing of a group of scientists who used special technology to force bugs, arachnids and arthropods to fight against each other and then sell it as a spectacle to humans.

After the events of the first one, as well as of the two prequel spin-offs (The Spider Path and The Scorpion Path), in which Dr. Bishop, the leader of the scientists, is seen utilizing a tech gun to turn a Wolf Spider's female partner into a giant version of herself, and then lock her in a cage for their own use, the Male Wolf Spider is left wandering alone in the desert. He sets chase after the Female Wolf Spider and Dr. Bishop, but Bishop quickly blocks his way, leaving the Spider stranded on a panic. After Bishop's cleared a large distance, the Spider goes after them on foot again, but because of its size, it cannot keep up. Later, the Emperor Scorpion, who saw the Giant Female Wolf Spider and Dr. Bishop (and his goons) walk past him, is trying to prey on local alien beasts, but is unable to do so as the aliens are quicker. The Male Wolf Spider and the Scorpion cross paths, but as the Scorpion tries to prey on the Spider, against the latter's will, both hear commotion coming from a nearby camp: Joanne is mourning the death of Vic, who had been killed after being poisoned by the Spider, after the climax of Bug Wars 1. The Scorpion sees prey in Joanne, while the Spider feels empathy for Joanne, and it prevents the Scorpion from attacking Joanne, after a brief fight scene between the two of them. Joanne gives them both a special device to grant them a human voice and an active consciousness. It's revealed that the Spider, who uses the voice of a Brazilian man (wolf spiders are known to exist in the Amazon rainforest), just wanted to live its normal life as an apex predator of the bug underworld, but when he met the Female Spider, he knew that being with her was his one and true purpose; and now, he understands why a human would mourn the death of her partner too. The Scorpion, voiced by an African man (they are native to West Africa), does not care about either of them and admits he just needs to feed. Joanne, despite the Scorpion trying to prey on her, says she will help him eat, if he helps him and the Spider find the Female Spider. The Scorpion, reluctantly, agrees.

We follow the trio as the human, Spider and Scorpion combine to hunt the same kind as earlier of wild alien bugs, with which the Scorpion and Spider feed on (Joanne passes). The Scorpion says he is thankful and will go on to help Joanne, but he's out once that's done as he's an animal to live in the wild. The Spider feels conflict, as he is warmed by the idea of having an owner along with his mate (having heard all of the stories of Tarantulas being good pets), but he doesn't trust Joanne just yet. Joanne also doesn't trust the two of them, thinking they will either try to backstab her and eat her, or they just won't get along and fight all the time, like cats and dogs. The Spider and the Scorpion are left at tension. Nevertheless, the trio heads to the colony capital of Felicidad, where they realize that all the locals and all their pets are being enslaved by the scientists, in the name of Earthling governments pushing for imperialist agendas. The Spider and Scorpion do not pretend to be angry, as they think that - just like in the animal kingdom - it's kill or be killed, and these governments, in their opinion, are just doing what it takes to survive. Joanne explains to them that humans are more than animals, but the Spider points out that this does not seem the case, given the brutality of the scientists and colony government's oppression. Joanne convinces them to help her out free some of these people. They do in some cool action sequences, which get vibrant camerawork and saturated colors. After spending some time with the locals, the trio socializes and gets to know one another better. The Spider and the Scorpion get into an argument, saying that they will fight in the end because they are bitter rivals in nature and that's just what animals are, with the Scorpion threatening to eat both Joanne and the Spider. But Joanne begs them to stick together, because humans can sometimes be even worse than they are, feeling hopeless for humanity. The arachnids stay pensive. Later, Joanne, the Spider and the Scorpion have triggered Dr. Bishop's attention. Joanne calls Bishop out for being a tyrant, and Bishop says "it's nothing personal - we're just better". When Joanne says that she thought scientists were supposed to do good, Bishop says: "some of us are like that... others just aren't". The Spider, inspired, says that even though animals are like that, he agrees with Joanne's earlier statements in that it doesn't have to be like that for humans, also subtly inspiring the Scorpion, who stays in silence. Bishop, shocked by hearing the arachnids talk, says that the Female and Male will die together. This triggers a fight, where Bishop unleashes the Giant Female Wolf Spider on the heroes. The Giant Female and the Male see eye to eye, and she doesn't want to fight the heroes, but Bishop tortures her until she does. Desperately, Joanne jumps in the way of the Male, who was gonna be bitten by the Female (against her will), and gets poison injected in her veins. As Bishop laughs maniacally and heads away on the repentant Female Wolf Spider's back, the Male Wolf Spider and the Emperor Scorpion, surprisingly worried, stick with Joanne. Joanne seems on the verge of dying, but she's rescued by locals whom he had freed from Bishop.

In a downtime beat, the Spider says that this would be the moment when he and the Scorpion would fight, but the Scorpion says that they should at least stick with Joanne for the time being and subvert that trope. The Scorpion also admits that, for the first time, he understands what humanity is about, and the Spider admits that it would be an honor for Joanne to be his owner. Joanne thanks the two of them, but she also gives them one thing: in the animal world, it's kill or be killed, and animals aren't nice when they need to be... and yet, animals can still be way, way nicer than humans, because they don't have malice. "We just have instinct", the Scorpion says. The Scorpion and the Spider stay with Joanne. Eventually, she does, and the final mission is the three of them stealing Bishop's size-increasing weapons in a bug-sized heist. Joanne shrinks herself down, like in the first Bug Wars movie, and the arachnids + other pets (like dogs, cats, birds, flying fish and aliens) and bugs unite. When she finds the big guns... she de-shrinks herself... and all of the bugs, including the Wolf Spider and the Emperor Scorpion, all increase to *actual* giant size (as tall as a three-story building). Dr. Bishop, furious, unleashes his own army of giant bugs. It's giant bug armageddon, as the bugs all kill each other, while the other pets help Joanne. Local people who Joanne helped join in. The Turkey Squad, cameoing from their own off-world colony (yes, this is a shared universe), try to help... but they're immediately killed by the Giant Female Wolf Spider, who eats their turkey and becomes superpowered, but still trying not to fight - only crippled by Bishop torturing her and forcing her to instinctintively fight against the (now Giant) Male Wolf Spider and Emperor Scorpion. Joanne fights Bishop in a melee fight too. Eventually, the good bugs kill all the bad bugs + Dr. Bishop's goons, Joanne handcuffs Bishop, and tells him that yeah, humans are smarter than animals and scientists are amongst the smartest ("we're better", as Bishop said earlier), but we need to use our intelligence for good, because even animals, who aren't intelligent, are nicer than us. The Male Spider brings the Female Spider to her senses. The mates stop fighting, and the Emperor Scorpion, hungry again, feeds on Dr. Bishop, killing him.

In the end, after giving Vic a proper funeral, the Male and Female Spiders are reunited again, but both say that they want to stay with Joanne. The Scorpion, embarrassed at first, admits he also wants to be pet by Joanne. As Joanne promises to save the colony from the evil government, the family of Joanne and arachnids heads on for a future fight.
