Statistics Country comparisons Which regions prefer Maleficient to SnowWhite most?

Recommended Posts

I would like to hear your thoughts.

Well, exchange rate as it's been mentioned is a HUGE factor. It's always fluctuating. The problem of 'different' currencies will always be present too. The euro, for example, will never be worth exactly the same as the pound. Obviously, this applies for all currencies meaning translations into dollars isn't the greatest way to determine how successful a movie has been. Then there's also cinema going. Some countries have much higher movie-going averages than others, which obviously skews results.Ticket prices vary greatly between each country also, meaning a country like the Philippines for example, could have the same admissions for a film as the UK, but the gross would be significantly less. And then there's just the simple idea that in different countries, different genres are more popular. Every country has varying preferences. In English speaking countries, American comedies will usually do very well, but in Asia, they'll flop. Or the other way around. Films like Battleship, which flop in most english-speaking countries, still do extremely well in upcoming markets/Asia, where the fantasy/robot genre remains ever popular.

Who loves KungFu Panda 2 most?

Posted Image

The theoretical values in million $ are the grosses of KungFu Panda 2 corrected for the Hollywood-Blockbuster-market size in each country. This size is determined by the sum of the 15 biggest Holllywood blockbusters of 2011 (local blockbuster are not taken into account) The table is sorted descending by this theoretical value. KFP2 is the gross of KungFu Panda 2 in million $ in each country.

The theoretical values could be interpreted either what would have been America's gross with the same love for this movie or what would this country have grossed had it the same marketsize as America.

Asia on top that is (Japan is again an isolated island at the bottom) DOM with Australia, UK further down

With my approach to compare only only HollywoodBlock-busters of 2011 exchange rates, market size , wealth and cinema going are all accounted for. I define love equals how much money they spend relative to other movies. Richer more cinephile countries will spend more, but in this calculation only their spending relative to other movies is relevant. The varying preferences that remain is what interest me. In the end similarity patterns between countries.

ThanksIf you added Israel I am sure it would have destroyed Belgium too, Smurfs is the biggest film since Avatar here.

I would not have thought any country more Smurf-o-phil than Belgium, but it seems Israel even tops that. The problem is to asign a theoretical value I have to determine the size of the market. I decided to do this by using the 15 bigest Holywood-blckbusters of the country 2011. For Israel I have problems, for instance Twilight 4.1? Edited by Rudolf

The only numbers available for Israel are those that are given by the big Hollywood studios, which distribute their own films. Unfortunately Summit/Lionsgate simply have their films distributed by a local studio which never releases any concrete numbers, so their is no way of knowing how much Twilight made.
