I mean, the controversy did have a material impact there. It only got a low-key release in less than 600 theaters (pretty low for a Rogen joint) and just quietly petered out in the middle of the crowded holiday frame.

That said, I don't think this is quite the same situation. Anyone picking this up at this point should be knowingly assuming the risks and embracing them, and that does seem to be what Ortenberg is doing.

Since the Washington Post article reporting this is behind a paywall:

NO DEAL: ‘The Apprentice' is Apparently Still Seeking Distribution — World of Reel

Quote

Not so fast.

Despite prior reporting, it looks like Ali Abassi’s “The Apprentice” hasn’t been bought by Briarcliffe Entertainment after all. It turns out that one of the film’s producers, Daniel Snyder, a major Trump donor, is blocking the deal (via The Washington Post).

Kinematics, which is Snyder’s production company, and one of the main financial backers of the film, isn’t happy with the rape scene in the film which depicts Donald Trump forcefully having sex with his then-wife Ivana Trump.

In May, Variety had reported that Snyder, who is a friend of Trump’s, first saw a cut of the film in February and was absolutely furious. This didn’t stop the film from premiering at Cannes where it was met with, mostly, positive reviews.

So that clown so pathetically gullible that he ended up funding a movie painting his friend in a negative light thinking it would be positive is still the problem it seems.

So this seems like a case of he said / she said at the outset. That WaPo article was published not long after the Deadline article came out, and it seems like much more of a long-gestating investigative journalism piece as opposed to the snap updates that Deadline runs on. So we'll just have to wait and see if Kinematics really is gonna be bought out of it.

Getting duped into producing a movie sounds embarrassing.

Even more embarrassing is refusing to sell the movie at all (and making zero cash that way) all because of blind loyalty to a now convict lmao. Yet would be on point for one of his followers.
