I keep forgetting about this movie, first having heard of it at Cinema Con*, but when I remember I'm always like "Oh please I hope we get this!"

Religious Political Machinations?

This was made for me.

Wonder what they can come up with for the previous pope's secret that is not sort of screamngly obvious.

Spoiler

And, yes, I think that he is accused of being a pedophile to be a pretty obvious one. I hope they are bit more inventive.

I just read the Robert Harris novel this film is based on.

There is one hell of a good movie in the  novel though. And from the trailer they are sticking close to the novel.

Main problem is one of the big plot points hangs on a Catholic Canon Law which the violation of might not be a big thing to most vieweres and don't get why it would pretty much wreck someone's chances of becoming pope.. Harris in the novel was able to take the time to explain why it is such a big deal, might be hard to do in  a movie without getting bogged down in expositiion.

You also have a problem in that the novel has a twist ending that telegraphs itself ahead too early, but they should be able to fix that. Luckily, though the novel is not totally dependent on the not so surprise ending.

I also see from a single shot in the trialer....

Spoiler

They are keeping in the Terrorist attack from the novel which triggers the climax. SInce the attack is by an Islamist group, I though they might change that.

The movie has a pulsing soundtrack that is very reminiscent of All Quiet on the Western Front, which keeps the film moving even when it otherwise might've felt a little slow.

Problem is the pulsing music will not solve the exposition problem you have with putting the novel on the screen.

From the reviews, they had solved the problem interesint to see how.

The plot to be understood is heavily dependent on the reader..or viewer..understanding exactly how the mechanics of electing a pope works. In a novel that is easy to do, in a film, not so easy though  from the early reviews  they did pull it off.
