I have a question for any french natives. What was it about Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis that resonated with you guys so much. I saw it for the first time last night after renting it from my college library, and while I enjoyed it i'm stumped as to why it became so big. I can understand Intouchables, but not this. Not a knock against the film, like I said I enjoyed it, just curiosity.

It is difficult to explain this success. The actor and director Dany Boon is a French comedian, well known. The success was a surprise, but also logical. The third Asterix has greatly disappointed one month before.Bienvenue chez les ch'tis was the hit comedy replacement. The theme targeting a french region with its dialect particular was very appreciated.

The duo of actors Boon / Merad worked. The promotion of the film was very good. The French comedies are very apreciate in France.

This success is a mystery, however. A fun movie that everyone wanted to see. That's it!Sometimes there is no explanation.

But it is a success that could not be exported because the film touches France and its culture. With difficulty understandable abroad.

Did you see it in French with English subtitles?

It may have lost a lot of jokes and content that way.

The German version is thought to be a good example of a well done dubbing, where they tried to create a dialect that carries the same jokes as in French.

And the story and characters work universally in my opinion.

The Italian remakes are also ultra successful.

I'm french and I didn't understand its success either but you got to take in account that local people which that movie was based on and targeted (the CHTIS people aka North France people who speak a very special dialect) kinda boost the attendance. I mean each of them probably saw the movie many times with their entire family and relatives. Every single one inhabitants of that region saw the movie like 15 times minimum in theaters. That was so nuts, it became a lame contest just to beat Titanic which was number one in attendance since 1998.
