2011 was an exceptionnel year for the french films (The Artist, the intouchables, Rien à déclarer, Polisse...). The beginning year was dominate by rien à déclarer with 8 million admissions.

So why ?

 

Because, no French film has managed to establish itself at box office. Many disappointments. Large failures for certain films. Because the quality was poor and the films simply not interesting.

 

But, same the american films are disappointments. Exception Django, but otherwise, nothing exceptionnel. The Worst is for Les Miserables 218 983 admissions only. I expected 3 million admissions. Les Miserables... adaptation of the work of Victor Hugo, even if it's a musical. In France Victor Hugo it's like Shakespeare in UK, I think. I don't understand.

 

The crises are a solution, but not only. The quality also. But we will see in the coming months.

French aren't very fond of musicals, and it was sung in English with French subtitles so I guess it wasn't appealing for a lot of people, in France we're pretty bad at foreign languages...

Depending on how "l'écume des jours" will perform. There is some french cast power in it.

The two films are so different, that the public will not be the same. I hope a big success for L'écume des jours, director Michel Gondry with a very large French cast:Audrey Tautou (Amelie, Da vinci code, l'auberge Espagnole...),Romain Duris (Arsène Lupin, l'auberge Espagnole, l'arnacoeur...),Gad Elmaleh (Chouchou, La rafle, Hors de prix...),Omar Sy (Intouchables...)Alain Chabat (Astérix, le Marsupilami...)...Now the film is very special,  success is not sure.
