The shaky cam was completely unnecessary. I thought the "villains" came off as cartoonish. And I don't normally have issue with language in a film if it's done right, Tarantino, Scorsese and Mamet can do it beautifully, but at times it came across as saying fuck just for the sake of it. Still I would give it a slight recommendation based on Gylenhall and Pena they were terrific. B-

not deserving of good reviews C- (45)

Pros: the leads have chemistry, a lot of scenes were tense as hell and the climax was amazing.

Cons: horrible editing, nauseating shake cam and some boring real life.

What worked:

Everything.

This might make my top 100 list.  An incredibly tense and riveting film.  A script that had me laughing and completely immersed into the lives of these two cops.  I loved Pena and Gylenhaal in it and Kendrick was fantastic also.

One of my favourite films of the last 5 years.

9.5/10

I liked it a lot more than I was expecting. Very solid work from Ayers, and great stuff from Gyllenhaal and Pena -- they had great chemistry together. I probably would've been really annoyed with the shaky-cam if I'd seen it in theaters, but on home video it didn't really bug me that much (although the reason behind it is pretty pointless).

Not that I'm down in the hood or anything, but this felt very real.
