A Marvel Fanboy
H'wood only gets 30%. Where did you find this memo? Please stop saying they only get 30% .... (it is actually 25%). And that is 25% pure gross, no distribution fee, no any kind of tax, and already higher than what they actually get from most international markets.

Actually, in most territories Hollywood studios receive between 40 and 50 percent of the gross box office.
Robert Cain
Last week China passed the $3 billion box office level for the first time. Next year it should approach $5 billion. Edited November 24, 2013 by Filmmogul
dezorz
Actually, in most territories Hollywood studios receive between 40 and 50 percent of the gross box office. it is not studios but distributors. most studios have their own distribution but this is not the case now. distributors keep from 8 to 12 percent a distribution fee and they also keep their marketing expenses. distribution gets 40-50 percent from a theater ticket revenues, then keeps distribution fees, marketing expenses, other expenses (different kind of taxes, currency excanhe fees, etc...) studios might end up with aprox. half of the sum distrubutor gets from ticket revenues.

In any other business, I want to get more out of my investment. 25% is puny considering I am taking all the risk, constant pursuit of creativity, infrastructure, investment in talents being groomed to be stars, publicity cost, other investment in peripheral industries, a mountain of legal fees. What does local distributor do really? Some movies practically market themselves. Getting 50% out of my blood & sweat, and the studios are getting "Oh, pleeeaase..."? In most major territories the studios distribute their own films, and thus keep all of the distributor's gross revenue.
