China Box Office Thread | Deadpool & Wolverine- July 26

Recommended Posts

While no one can prove it, I think the impact of all the manipulations combined on the release of imported films should be no more than 10% of the total box office these films are generating. For instance, total imported gross looks to be around 18B. But without the manipulations, it is still unlikely to go beyond 20B IMO. (That's still less than 50% of the yearly gross).

Despite a quota of 34 RS titles and 20-plus buyouts, only a handful of HLW blockbusters could have some size-able staying power after 30 days in release. As for the bad release dates, many fans and moviegoers who want to see these movies would see it anyway.

By my guess, if we divide the current cinema audience in China into groups, 30% of them basically only go to imported movies, 30% of them go to both imported and local movies, 40% of them basically only go to local movies.

Only go to imported movies? Is that even possible? I can believe, and understand why, a lot of people only watch local stuff but why would anyone in any country only watch foreign stuff? And even if we believe there are some people who do so I really can't believe 30% of the moviegoers would fall into that category.

About 60k

Hmm. Well, my assumption was based on the, er, assumption that SW is not a highly known property here and that it should thus not be a highly anticipated one either whereas KFP3 must be comparitvely much more highly anticipated.... So what does this mean? SW is actually quite popular here? Or that KFP3 is not really as highly anticipated as many of us may believe? Or is this isn't really supposed to mean anything since they its still really early for all of them?

You know the overall quality of local films is very poor compared with HLW ones. I know a lot of people who, at least they claim so, only go to imported movies because they do not trust local films any more. 30% is just a rough guess. It may be overestimated ...

Judging from the comments on Chinese news, entertainment and review sites, the number of people who despise local films are considerable. I am not 100% sure but it seems that their comments much much more vicious than other countries in the world. Even hits like TMK and MH have people thrashing them as rubbish, national disgrace, etc.

SW is actually a highly known property here:

EP3 was #5 2005

EP2 was #4 2002

EP1 was #2 1999

Though that was a bit different of era.

Both EP7 and SB should have a shot for top 10 of 2016 though there are many even stronger contenders. KFP3 is a lock for 2016 top 10.

Top 10 2015 released films at the moment look to be:

1 Furious 7 速度与激情7 ¥2,426,340,000 $391,345,161
2 Monster Hunt 捉妖记 ¥2,000,000,000 $322,580,645 EST.
3 Avengers: Age of Ultron 复仇者联盟2 ¥1,464,020,000 $236,132,258
4 Jurassic World 侏罗纪世界 ¥1,420,000,000 $229,032,258
5 Jian Bing Man 煎饼侠 ¥1,200,000,000 $193,548,387 EST.
6 The Man from Macau 2 澳门风云2 ¥974,360,000 $156,147,436

10 The Wolf Totam 狼图腾 ¥698,300,000 $111,907,051

In the next five months, films that could have a chance, even if slim, for top 10 should include (in order of release):

13-Aug Go away Mr. tumour 滚蛋吧!肿瘤君
23-Aug Terminator: Genisys  终结者5
8-Sep Mission Impossible 5 碟中谍5
13-Sep Minions 小黄人大眼萌
25-Sep Lost in HongKong 港囧
1-Oct Ghost Blows Out: The Nine-Story Demon Tower 鬼吹灯之九层妖塔
17-Dec The Ghouls 鬼吹灯之寻龙诀
24-Dec Breakup Guru 2 恶棍天使
24-Dec Skiptrace 绝地逃亡

But I think among imported films, probably only F7, AOU, JW and MI5 will end up in top 10.

Does that mean that to be top 10 in 2015, the film must make at least ¥800m?

Yes. Maybe Macao 2 with 974m wont even be in top 10.  :o Imagine MI5, Minions, LiHK, Skiptrace and the two Ghouls all pass 1B.

who know

- one or two of them may be disappointed.

- other surprising success movie occur (like JBM, only 20m yuan budget can join 1B club)

Agree. There are always surprises and disappointments.

It's said JBM only cost 13m to shoot but cost about 50m to market. It's one of the most profitable Chinese movies. It saved Sohu ...

I havent seen any review for Ringo Lam's Wild City. Was looking forward to this flick but the trailer along with the marketing was very unimpressive.

LiHK trailer is very disappointing, trying too hard to mock the first one even without Ning Hao and Baoqiang. (definitely skipping this one)

Skiptrace trailer does not really live up to hype IMO.

The Ghouls hasnt released a full trailer.

But I'm actually interested to see The Nine-Story Demon Tower and Mr. tumour.

Other local films through the rest of 2015 I want to check include the beautifully shot martial arts drama The Assinassin, Andy Lau-Liu Ye starring crime thriller Saving Mr. Wu directed by Ding Sheng, Ching Wan Lau's crime thriller The Vanished Murderer and Tung-Shing Yee's wuxia epic Death Duel. I will probably check out Guan Hu's Fading Wave and Deng Chao's Breakup Guru 2 too.

I googled Tong Liya's movies 2015 & immediately saw 8.5/10 was rated by http://www.cityonfire.com/wild-city-2015-review-ringo-lam/

Actually, it's not my type.

Really look forward to The Assassin, Sword Master & Both 2 version of The Ghouls. Lu Chuan's  version is so attractive.

Thanks, that's a positive review for WC, which is Ringo Lam's first real film in 12 years. Glad he's still got it. I like action thrillers like the ones Johnny To makes. Very pumped for next year's Three on the Road despite Zhao Wei ...

I think Sword Master = Death Duel, right ?
