Although monopoly film importer China Film Group is usually responsible for promoting the Hollywood films, whose distribution it also largely controls, industry insiders are quick to say that the state-run company's scant experience with actual competition means it has never demonstrated basic marketing skills or a willingness to spend real marketing money.

As China's release calendar has become crowded with four or five films each weekend — in years past, one was typical — studios are scrambling to augment the promotion of their films.

"Now, every opening weekend in China, there will be box-office winners and losers, whereas just a few years ago you never had to think about marketing," said Senn Moses, head of Asia operations for leading Hollywood marketing company Cimarron.

In addition to online marketing, the studios reach Chinese commuters in the biggest urban markets with outdoor advertising — spending for which rose 40% in 2011, according to research firm EntGroup Inc.

Chow declined to reveal Sony's "MIB 3" promotion and advertising budget. But outdoor advertising company JCDecaux Out-of-Home Media Group revealed that Sony paid $125,761 for a two-week digital campaign in 30 key stations of Shanghai's subway, screening 15-second spots 120 times daily.

Television advertising for Hollywood films is practically nonexistent in China. "It's very fragmented and expensive," Chow said.

Very good report.

No wonder I had seen subway TV spots for MIB3 all that days. And film promotions in China do become quite costly these days.

In 2012, June is dying and July will be dying. :wtf:

Fuck crap local films.

But we will have a biggest August! :D

Wont call that. Word is TASM will only be released from August 25th.

Firedeep, June 14th 18:00pm (GMT+8) updated:

The Hunger Games Begin in China Finally

Lionsgate's futurist blockbuster film The Hunger Games debuted in Chinese theaters today (June 14th) on more than 2,000 screens, which is the studio's second and second largest release ever (only behind The Expendables) in China.

As of 18pm, THG is performing about 70% ahead of Madagascar 3 and 90% ahead of MIB3 in daily admissions on China's biggest film tracking system, which represents about 90% of the market potential. More quantifiable numbers indicate that THG opening day is heading to somewhere between 10M yuan and 15M yuan ($1.6M~$2.4M), which could be translated to a 58M yuan to 87M yuan ($9m~$13.5m) 4-days opening weekend. And with that opening, whether 200M yuan ($30M) can happen will depend on which end it actually falls closer to.

THG numbers will be updated quite a few times through this weekend, so please make sure to check out here in the China thread if you are interested.
