Let us look in the franchises way:

Harry Potter yearly ranks WW:

HP1 --------- 2001 ------ 1

HP2 --------- 2002 ------ 2

HP3 --------- 2004 ------ 2

HP4 --------- 2005 ------ 1

HP5 --------- 2007 ------ 2

HP6 --------- 2009 ------ 2

HP7 --------- 2010 ------ 3

HP8 --------- 2011 ------ 1

Harry Potter yearly ranks China:

HP1 --------- 2002 ------ 2

HP2 --------- 2003 ------ 1

HP3 --------- 2004 ------ 9

HP4 --------- 2005 ------ 3

HP5 --------- 2007 ------ 5

HP6 --------- 2009 ------ 10

HP7 --------- 2010 ------ 8

HP8 --------- 2011 ------ 7

Mission Impossible yearly ranks WW:

MI1 --------- 1996 ------ 3

MI2 --------- 2000 ------ 1

MI3 --------- 2006 ------ 8

MI4 --------- 2011 ------ 5

Mission Impossible yearly ranks China:

MI1 --------- 1996 ------ 6

MI2 --------- 2000 ------ 6

MI3 --------- 2006 ------ 7

MI4 --------- 2012 ------ 5

There are franchises (HP) that perform worse and worse (in a relative way) over the years with each installment in China. And there are ones that mostly stay flat (MI).

Franchise like HP or THG, every installment is so close to each other that in a quickly developing market like China their yearly ranks, despite staying flat WW, will keep dropping if they cant gain new fans in a rate outpacing the increase of the whole marketplace.

The stability of Mission Impossible series in China, despite having dropping big WW in ranking over the years, on the other hand, means MI5 will have no problem at all getting a spot in the 2016 yearly top 10, no matter how big the overal market will be by 2016. (unless MI5 sucks in quality and flops everywhere).

THG ranked #24 in 2012, but CF probably wont even be in top 30. MJ1 and MJ2 likely will keep dropping in ranks.

But how come THG didn't gain many new fans compared to something like Thor or even GI Joe?

The first film wasn't that well received (it has like a 6.5 on a popular movie rating site in China) and the GA is more into bayplosions type of films. Plus I don't think the books are popular there either (I could be wrong, but I've never seen anyone talking about them) which is why its increase is less than other countries.

Thor is a super hero movie.  Since 2012 they all do relatively well.  From TA to TDKR to TASM to IM3 to MOS...even The Wolverine reached $40 millions.

Add to that, it is a by product from TA somewhat related to IM3 too.

THG OD 13M on 2500 screens.

CF OD 14.5M on 4500 screens, including 700K midnight.

Ouch ..... the marketplace is 45% bigger than 18 months ago, yet the sequel just increased minor 10% on OD.

Both decreased from estimates..... but CF, ouch! Is this even gonna do 200m? Is this even gonna match THG?How is Friday looking?

200m is not happening at this point. Target is matching THG total 174M, unless it miracley strikes big on Saturday and Sunday.
