Its animating an inanimate object so it isnt really a stretch.

You could also say that a live action movie is animating a series a photos...

 

You could say that turning on a car was animating an inanimate object too...

Yeah The Muppet Movie is not animation and I would be baffled at anyone who consider it one. pretty sure Kermit's a 3D figure that Jim Henson and co. actually made and used real sets and actors to make the films
