Revenant is behaving like The Grandmaster. Don't know Grandmaster's HK word of mouth.. but in Singapore, wom is pretty negative and worse... it was released months before HK film awards here. Malaysian distributors saw the screening of The Grandmaster and decided not to buy the rights.

Revenant will be in Singapore theaters on 4th Feb, CNY weekend against Vegas to Macau 3 and MK2 (no news on mermaid...weird). Wondering whether WOM from HK will spread here..

Grandmaster had mixed word of mouth. There were only two groups: loved it or hated it. Ooh, Mermaid is out February 8 in HK so maybe it will end up releasing in Singapore on that day too. Most Chinese movies are same day with HK and Singapore.

Yup. News were just confirmed this evening. 8th Feb in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei for Mermaid. Distributed by Sony Pictures International, lol.

Weird for a big release to come out on 8th Feb here, because movies are usually released on Thursdays(like Msia and HK) and I haven't heard of a big release on a Monday.

Wong Kar Wai has name recognition in N. America though but it could have gotten a higher theater count due to a mix of both.

The Grandmaster got a relatively wide release in the U.S. (over 10x the screen count of any previous WKW film) because Harvey Weinstein had fantasies that it would be the next Crouching Tiger or Hero. (This was much the same reason he gave Iron Monkey a wide release in 2001—Crouching Tiger had just shattered records for a foreign-language film and the marketing for Iron Monkey played up the shared link with Yuen Woo-ping.) He was dead wrong about The Grandmaster's breakout potential, but at least he wrung a couple of well-deserved Oscar nominations out of it...

How I wish he had purchased Ip Man 3's rights. Well Go USA is trying to deliver 100 theaters which is really pathetic. At least The Weinstein Company is producing Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2, that's a relief.

PS, remember I read a funny thing about Donnie Yen breaking out in North America, at least based on the 3 wide release and their relationship with Donnie, lol.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon --> Donnie is now the lead for Part 2, if he was in one, he would have already been a household name but he wasn't that huge back then to play the lead for such a movie.

Hero --> Donnie happens to be a supporting character in this.

Grandmaster --> The story of Ip Man who was originally(at least appeared in theaters first) played by Donnie Yen.

Iron Monkey(2001) --> He was the lead, was released 8 years after the original and it was online everywhere, but it still did well at that time breaing into the top 5 foreign language films.

Donnie always rubbed shoulders with a North American breakout, let's see how Ip Man 3, CTHD2 and Rogue One plays out for him. He deserves to be a household name in North America and Europe.

Look at the bright side—if Harvey had gotten his hands on Ip Man 3, he probably would've decided it's at least 20 minutes too long (as he does with virtually every Asian movie he picks up) and ordered it recut into near-incoherence. Also, CTHD2 is getting a simultaneous theatrical and Netflix release in the U.S., which all but guarantees it won't get a wide release in theaters (indeed several major theater chains—including AMC, which is Chinese-owned and has been quite supportive of Asian cinema—have already said they won't show it). On top of that it will only be shown on IMAX screens, which further limits the possibilities for expansion. I would say that Harvey is only involved with the film to expand his presence in China and doesn't really care how it does in America, but then they made the damn thing in English, so I don't know what he was thinking.

True. The Grandmaster was already an awful movie(no offense to Fans, but I haven't seen a movie where there are more people visiting the washroom or using their phones other than Fantastic 4). And Weinstein's cut made it even more pathetic.

Weinstein would probably drag Ip Man 3 down a few months, cut and release it much later than Well Go USA. But still it would be great to see an Asian Movie do well in the states, the last time a Hong Kong/Chinese movie breaking 10million USD was like a decade ago. Well Go USA is just not experienced enough or good enough to make that happen, not with an estimated 40 theaters...

I understand CTHD2 will be on Netflix, but leaving Theaters aside, we are looking at a worldwide streaming release(therefore English) which will definitely allow more viewers to watch it than compared to a wide release of let's say 2500 screens in the US. So even though it was upsetting at first, I am actually onboard with it now.

Anyway, CTHD2 will also be in Mandarin, at least for the HK and China release, here is the Mandarin Trailer which looks much more exciting.Coco Lee will also be singing the theme song along with Jam Hsiao for the mandarin version. Therefore perhaps it will be available in Mandarin on Netflix too?

Ah ok. I thought WKW had some name recognition but I guess not. Harvey's producing CTHD2? No wonder it's getting a Netflix and theatrical release.

Hmm, it must be an exchange rate problem that Star Wars 7 and Ip Man 3 failed to clear 10m and 6.2m respectively because both increased from earlier actuals. Bad holds for Ip Man 3 and Star Wars 7. Decent increase for Sherlock but we're comparing its 2nd week 7-day vs. 1st week 2-day. Anniversary held surprisingly well. Strong 3-day opening for The Revenant.

Decent for The 5th Wave. Not bad for The Revenant. At these lower levels, Star Wars 7's drop cannot be analyzed properly with duplicates in IMAX and D-BOX possibly inflating its admissions. Bad opening for Steve Jobs. Bad holds for Ip Man 3 and Sherlock. Ten Years had its first significant drop but it will roll it back to less than a 20% decline for the day. The release of the Director's Cut on Thursday did not help Anniversary very much.

The 5th Wave leads The Revenant by a fair margin on Thursday but it is getting slammed by users. It was in the 1's earlier but has gone back up to a still rotten 2.7. This could have a major impact on its admissions this weekend and it might open the door for The Revenant to slide into 1st.

79% of 5th Wave's admissions came from walk-ins despite the lackluster support from users. Opening day score stands at a paltry 2.4. I think we can expect Revenant to come out on top in admissions sometime this weekend and as early as Friday. Buoyed by its Golden Globes' wins, The Revenant did alright. 5th Wave won with quite a big lead on Thursday but that gap will shrink and eventually Revenant should pass 5th Wave on a day-to-day basis. Ip Man 3 had an OK hold. 5th Wave having abysmal word of mouth can only be good news for this film as viewers will head back to Ip Man 3 if they're turned off by the bad WOM. Star Wars 7 did OK but I'll need to see the Thursday gross for a better judgement. Anniversary's stunt director's cut release did very little in terms of any sort of spike this week. Poor opening for Steve Jobs. I'd say Revenant stole most of the attention away from it. Sherlock had a dismal hold.

WOM of Revenant is not causing any detriments to it apparently, seems like the Oscar Nominations and Golden Globes awards gave it a bigger push and negated any damages poor WOM is causing it. 5th Wave is just... a terrible movie.

Exactly to both. I even got scared of the negative reviews for The 5th Wave and watched Ip Man 3 again instead.

The Oscar announcement couldn't have come at a better time for The Revenant. This should allow an extra week of curiosity before it starts to drop.

5th Wave barely won over Revenant in admissions but Revenant likely won in gross on Friday. The top 2 holdovers and Steve Jobs all benefited from 5th Wave's terrible word of mouth. All 3 saw the best daily increases from Thursday in the top 10 and in the case of Ip Man 3 held better week-to-week on Friday than Thursday. Star Wars 7 had another meh drop. Anniversary held really well. It might have something to do with the director's cut being released this week. Sherlock continues to implode.

This will be a very close weekend at the top. The 5th Wave got off to a quick start on Thursday but The Revenant has already caught up to it in dailies. What will be the deciding factors are Sunday and the ticket price increase for The Revenant. Ip Man 3 pulled out a good hold. It's not the hold that will take it to 8m but it will get it closer to Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer's totals. Steve Jobs was overshadowed by Revenant. It was a big mistake to open close to it. They should have held onto it until January 28. Anniversary did OK but the Director's Cut didn't do much of boosting its gross.

This was a tough Sunday for most films. After most films increased with Sunday pre-sales from Saturday's pre-sales, almost all films were unable to keep pace with their pre-sales and fell from Saturday. The only film that kept up its pace from its Sunday pre-sales was Sherlock and that had the worst hold of any holdover. Perhaps losing steam, The Revenant was down nearly 3,000 admissions from Saturday and turned one of the best increases with Sunday pre-sales into the 2nd worst hold from Saturday. Despite only doubling its opening day pre-sales with its Sunday pre-sales, The 5th Wave was the most popular choice with walk-ups today which suggests that there is a huge market for a sci-fi disaster flick. Ip Man 3 was the only film of the top 5 to increase from Saturday and it took almost a 50% bump with its Sunday pre-sales from its Saturday pre-sales to do it. The drop is good, verging on very good and there were many sellouts today so it seems to be making a comeback. Ok hold for Star Wars 7 though its drop in gross will be much larger. Terrible drop from Saturday for Steve Jobs.

Up to January 14, 2015.

Star Wars 7 will pass TDKR for #10 by Wednesday. Transformers 4 is a stretch. Final gross should be around 81m-82m. Ip Man 3 will pass MI5 on Sunday and will join the top 30 by Thursday and pass 55m HK by Friday. It will slide by Police Story 4 to at least be the #3 local grossing movie but to beat Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, it needs to display amazing holds the next couple of weeks. One of the surprises in the top 50 has to be Speed. I'm very surprised it's still in the top 50 20+ years later.

@Bluebomb

With the imminent release of Ip Man 3 in US on 22nd January, a lot of overseas reviewers fail to understand the details or the narration techniques of Ip Man 3... Rotten Tomato score is at a... sad 67% for the best movie in the Franchise. Is there any way to add your review up there as an expert review?

Since I'm not a professional reviewer nor am I working for a trade publication or a reputable website, it is very unlikely.

Early Thursday schedules

Revenant leads all holdovers with minimal cuts while The 5th Wave and Ip Man 3 will stay in all theaters. Star Wars 7 will get axed from a lot of theaters. It will still play in most IMAX theaters though. Anniversary will remain in almost all theaters.

New openers are all over the place. The Big Short seems to be getting the most theaters but Dirty Grandpa is just behind. Concussion and House of Wolves aren't too far back either but it is still early days. The rest of the theaters will release their schedules tomorrow and this could change the order of the new openers depending on how UA schedules this week.
