Excellent hold for The Mermaid. I am a bit surprised it won today. It led for most of the day. It being the highest grossing movie in China might have had a slight effect here. Also very good for Deadpool.

Well, it seems like everything's back to normal. Solid holds for Deadpool and The Mermaid. I believe The Mermaid can drop less than 50% this weekend if it keeps this up. 13 Hours and How to Be Single both had nice increases. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 had a pretty weak Tuesday. All 3 Chinese language films in the top 10 fell on Tuesday perhaps drilling home that weaker holds are to be expected shortly. Spotlight/The Hateful Eight saw very good bumps. These two should play very well into next week.

Schedules for Thursday

Deadpool and The Mermaid continue to lead in most theaters. The Finest Hours and Zoolander 2 are generally behind. The Finest Hours will show in more than 30 theaters including IMAX (very wide) while Zoolander 2 premieres wide with 28. The Danish Girl/Creed are both going semi-wide with 14 or 15 theaters. PG Love goes wide with 22 theaters.

Pretty boring admissions over all. The Finest Hours might be super inflated from IMAX and perhaps D-BOX. Very good for The Danish Girl despite opening semi-wide. Good hold for The Mermaid. Deadpool's drop might be inflated from the loss of IMAX this week. Zoolander 2 is a disaster.

Meh for The Finest Hours. Opening day score sits at a mixed 3.6. Very good hold for The Mermaid. Good for Deadpool. Strong for The Danish Girl. Opening day reviews are extremely positive with a grand 4.7/5. Rough start for Zoolander 2. It is getting bashed by users. It only has a 2.4/5 score. Weak holds for 13 Hours and How to Be Single. Not good for The Secret but opening day score is a very good 4.1/5. Not good for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2. Terrible for Creed but its opening day score stands at a nice 4.2/5.

Weak increase for The Finest Hours. This could fall from yesterday's admissions. Very good increase for The Danish Girl. A few theaters will add this to their schedule on Saturday. Solid for The Mermaid. Not good for Deadpool. It will need to prove itself once again. Good increase for Zoolander 2. Let's see if the negative word of mouth will scare off walk-ins today. Great jump for How to Be Single.

The Secret - $11,572

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 - $257,177

Different story was painted once reliable numbers came in. Deadpool was #1 in admissions (9,500 for the day) and was just a bit over $5,000 behind The Finest Hours despite 25% of FH's showtimes in 3D. The Mermaid and Deadpool came in with identical admissions per showing, 47, and The Mermaid almost came in 2nd in admissions with 8,500 (vs. 8,600 for The Finest Hours). Deadpool should be able to pass 7m by Sunday. The Mermaid is aiming for about 6.4-6.6m.

For openers, The Danish Girl wowed with an average of 91 per showing. It will make more than $400,000 this weekend and could challenge $500,000 with less than 20 theaters showing. Zoolander 2 had about 2/3 of showings as Deadpool/The Mermaid but came up with less than half of their grosses. Average admissions per showing was at a low 32. It won't make $300,000 this weekend.

This confirms that Deadpool made the top 50 last week ahead of Thunderbolt in only 2 weeks. The Mermaid was right behind and only 3.5m HK away from making the top 50 all time as well. Both of them had the best holds of any wide release. The Good Dinosaur passed From Vegas to Macau 3 on Sunday although both did not have great holds while 13 Hours posted a decent opening. From Vegas to Macau 3 won't surpass the 2nd's total. Not that great for How to Be Single. The Monkey King 2 passed 2m this week but won't come close to TMK's total. Poor opening for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2.

Good recovery for The Finest Hours from pre-sales but not a good increase overall. Great hold for The Mermaid. It and Deadpool were neck and neck on Friday in gross. On Friday, it passed 6m and it is gearing up to enter the top 10 local films of all time by Saturday. Deadpool, meanwhile, had a good hold and will pass Ant-Man and X-Men: Days of Future Past today. By Sunday or Monday, this will officially join the top 30 films of all time. Solid increase for The Danish Girl. There's going to be an explosion in admissions and gross on Saturday when more theaters join in on its success. Not good for Zoolander 2. It will be left behind this weekend and might only barely make over $200,000.

I am having issues with internet currently but The Mermaid is projected to take #1 this weekend courtesy of Sunday where it will forge ahead of The Finest Hours and Deadpool. It is projected to swim away with a $655k weekend (-42%). The Finest Hours is expected to clip Deadpool for #2 with 630k vs. 620k for Deadpool (-53%).

@Bluebomb

Do you know the Bluray release date of Ip Man 3 or where to check upcoming Bluray releases in Hong Kong?

A bad rumour coming up is that Ip Man 3'a bluray release is on 3th March, 1 day before the China theatrical release...

This will literally kill Ip Man 3 in terms of piracy, hope the rumour isn't true.

No info yet about the Blu-Ray release date in HK but Blu-Ray comes out on April 19 in the US so I doubt China will get the Blu-Ray release that early.

The Finest Hours converted to 2D at most theaters on Saturday so its increase is not that great. Solid for The Mermaid. Deadpool had a good hold. Very good for The Danish Girl. It added 5 theaters today which explains doubling Fridays admissions. Disappointing for Zoolander 2.

It's a very close race between the top 3 and really any of them could be #1 this weekend. The Mermaid has the inside track on #1 with Sunday's increase. It will become the first Chinese language film to keep more than half of its 2nd week audience. The Finest Hours churned out an OK weekend despite most theaters changing from 3D to 2D on Saturday. Deadpool had a good weekend but it seems like 8.5m is the ceiling. The hold itself does not really help with next weekend when the double bill of Gerard Butler opens. Excellent opening for The Danish Girl. This could even get a boost from The Oscars and even more theaters could pick this up on Thursday. Poor for Zoolander 2.

These 2 websites allow Pre-orders for Ip Man 3, stating the release date of March 3rd and March 10th respectively:

http://www.dddhouse.com/v3/product_details.php?ProductID=15326
http://www.buyoyo.com/buyoyo/ProductDisplay.do?prrfnbr=11581330&prtype=0

But nothing on YesAsia. HMV HK puts a release date of 10th March, but doesn't allow pre-sales while allowing pre-sales for other titles stretching to April.

I don't think Raymond Wong is that stupid right? I mean he was involved in the China Ip Man 3 Premiere early today, how can he allow Bluray DVDs to be out so soon and kill the China box office? Gosh.

Very good for The Mermaid. Terrible for The Finest Hours. Word of mouth might be starting to affect this. Its score remains unchanged from opening day: a 3.6. The Danish Girl held on for an increase. Excellent weekend and score all around. Its score is also unchanged from opening day, a riveting 4.6/5. That's the 2nd Sunday that Deadpool went down by a lot from Saturday. The only explanation that I can offer is that Sunday is a day where families go out and watch something more family oriented or appropriate. Add that in with weaker night shows because of people going back to work on Monday and it's a double whammy. Zoolander 2 is falling hard. With the weakest score of this week, it will facepalm down the rankings soon. Good increase for The Good Dinosaur.

The Finest Hours was #1 in admissions but it was likely inflated by IMAX and D-Box. The Mermaid was a strong #2 while Deadpool came in at #3.

4 The Danish Girl $450,000   $450,000
5 Zoolander 2 $215,000   $215,000
Top 3 and Zoolander 2 saw their grosses go down with estimates. In the process, Deadpool swapped places with The Finest Hour. The Mermaid took the lead on Sunday and jumped out to a $40,000 win over The Finest Hours and Deadpool. The Mermaid will have crossed 50m HK on Sunday and is looking good for 60m HK. Deadpool is so close to 7m and 60m HK is coming but next week sees 2 Gerard Butler films target its action audience and it could send Deadpool scurrying. The Finest Hours could not tap into its 3D surcharges for very long as many theaters switched to 2D on Saturday. The weekend itself is OK but its legs will be tested with action adventure films coming out beginning next week. Excellent start for The Danish Girl. Its opening weekend can be attributed to Tom Hooper, Eddie Redmayne, the controversial subject matter and wonderful reviews. Its run could extend by a few weeks if it wins some big Oscars. More theaters could pick this up depending on its Oscar performance and based on their own theater chain performance. Zoolander 2 fell flat on its face with poor reviews miring the sequel. The comedy market was coming off a big surprise in Dirty Grandpa plus you've got The Mermaid and Deadpool servicing bits and pieces of the comedy market so Zoolander 2 had to market itself beyond the nostalgia factor which it completely failed to do. This will leave with less than $500,000.

Why don't they move the release date to April 19 or April 26 then it would have 7 or 8 weeks of uninterrupted play. My guess is that they moved it only 1 week back because people will still pirate after a few days of it being out so there's no point in delaying the Blu-Ray release until April.

Ip Man 3 is released only in 3D in Theaters in China, even if it is going to be pirated, it will be unclear and wouldn't do much damage to the box office IMO. Bluray Rip is a whole different story. =( I tried to ask Alvina to check whether she can push it back till April, but no replies from her.

My guess is that once they sign the contract with the DVD Distributor, it is up to the DVD Distributor to set the release date, and it is no longer up to Pegasus Motion Picture's control, just like the movie release dates in China, Germany etc, the movie distributor choose their own dates and marketing... so I think it works the same way with the Bluray and DVD distributors, so nothing much they can do.. I would guess.

That still does not make sense. Even if the DVD distributor sets the date, there should be a clause specifying that they cannot release before a certain date. I can't believe that Raymond Wong would miss something like this. China is the only big grossing market that will make or break Ip Man 3's gross. Without China, Ip Man 3 is a box office failure. There's something not right here because someone from China decided to delay the China release to March 4 then the Blu-Ray was supposed to come out on March 3?

I don't agree with whoever said that they don't care about the China market. They DO care. They are basing their fortunes around China. They have to.

  Monday adm.     February 29
Rank Movie LW TW % chg
1 The Finest Hours -- 7,813 --
2 The Danish Girl -- 6,961 --
3 The Mermaid 13,210 5,950 -55.0%
4 Deadpool 12,328 4,549 -63.1%
5 Zoolander 2 -- 1,684 --
6 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi 3,665 1,259 -65.6%
7 Spotlight 1,231 914 -25.8%
8 How to Be Single 2,692 845 -68.6%
9 The Secret -- 833 --
10 Creed -- 664 --

Big push from Oscar films. Spotlight was the big winner today (obviously). One theater will add Spotlight into rotation on Thursday. Creed seems to have gotten a slight bump. At the top, The Finest Hours 'won' Monday but it is down 28% from Thursday's admissions. The Danish Girl is the only one of the top 5 that gained from Thursday's admissions though the increase is easily explained by the addition of 5 theaters on Saturday + post-Oscar jump. The Mermaid had a good hold and slipped 28% from Thursday admissions. That is down from last Monday's -18% drop from the previous Thursday's admissions. Similarly, Deadpool saw a bigger drop this week with Monday's admissions from Thursday admissions than last week. Last Monday saw it fall -38% while this week the gap grew to -45%. Of course, all the attention is currently on Oscar pics so drops should be higher than normal. Unfortunately for both they have come at a bad time with Thursday schedules directly influenced by Monday's admissions. Zoolander 2 is off a whopping -55% from last Thursday's admissions.

I have a feeling that they don't have control over the DVD release schedule in Hong Kong as it has already been agreed with the distributor. As the film came out back in Dec 24, a 2-3 month window seems like the regular time for the DVD to be released. Usually it HK, a film gets a home entertainment release pretty quickly after the run has finished in the cinema and I'm assuming it will be done by Thursday. It's China's own fault it delayed its released so late. It crazy that the film has been released in the UK and the US before China. They dropped the ball for their China release and you can expect the home video distributors to hang around until China gets its act together since the DVD distributor gets no advantage from holding it back because of another territories release date.

They need to rectify the home release schedule then. It's crazy that they release DVDs/Blu-Rays only 2 months after the start of theatrical release.

Actuals (up to Sunday)

Deadpool - $6,955,454
Ip Man 3 - $7,753,355
The Mermaid - $6,497,433

Deadpool will pass 7m on Monday or Tuesday. Ip Man 3 will end up as the #3 local release of all time. Its run will end on Wednesday. The Mermaid is passing 6.5m on Monday. 7m will be breached by Sunday.

Thursday schedules

London Has Fallen will get the biggest screens and full day showtimes everywhere. Gods of Egypt has gotten mixed reception from theaters so far. Some will only show it on half day showtimes while others are going full throttle with full day showtimes in the 2nd largest theaters. The Mermaid falls to the 2nd or 3rd biggest screen and Deadpool sinks to #3 or #4 depending on The Danish Girl/The Finest Hours performance. The Finest Hours is cut down to half day showtimes. The Danish Girl will remain everywhere and retain most showtimes. Zoolander 2 is getting shut down or left on 1 showtime.

Managed to contact Edmund Wong, who gave me a long and detailed reply. He said in most countries, it is the norm to release the Bluray and DVD 1 or 2months after the Threatical release. When 28 major countries bought over the distribution rights, Pegasus Motion Pictures insisted that on the Dec 24th Theatrical release date with many countries' own distributors having the discretion to shift the release date later based on their own risks.
So China decided to release it on March 4th, knowing the Bluray will be out around that time and the China distributor decided to take the risk. According to Edmund, Pegasus Motion Pictures already begged and tried to convince all the other 27 distributors to delay the Bluray, hence UK and US only comes out in April, Taiwan and HK in March... it was supposed to be much early, he said March 10th is reallly the best that they can do. =(

I replied to him tried to tell him to push again, but I doubt they have any control over it anymore. =(
