How did TASM's OD pre-sales stack up with recent blockbusters?
Movie OD admissions % diff
The Amazing Spider-Man 32,580
The Avengers 47,317 -31.1%
Transformers 3 44,161 -26.2%
Harry Potter 7-2 62,089 -47.5%
Toy Story 3 32,294 +0.9%
Pirates 4 21,559 +51.1%
Shrek 3 49,634 -34.4%
Not great judging from the list. It doesn't mean much except confirm that TASM will make over 3m this weekend.

5 The Bounty -- 1,258 -- --
The Amazing Spider-Man total OD admissions - 64,471

2D share - 18.5%

Good for The Amazing Spider-Man. OD should be about $600,000, maybe slightly more. Very good for Motorway. The Dictator did alright. Terrible for The Bounty.

The storm is suppressing pre-sales for all movies today. I think TASM could get to 85,000 admissions for 3D today. When a typhoon hit HK last time, the #1 film at that time, Johnny English Reborn, managed a 6.99 multiplier from pre-sales to final numbers (8,271 -> 57,796). It's obvious that TASM won't achieve the same multiplier but I could see admissions pouring in throughout the day. 2D version should pull in the same or slightly below number of admissions from yesterday. It should be close to about $900,000 for Saturday for a 2-day total of about 1.5m.

Typhoon Warning Signal #8 is now in effect. All public transportation is suspended and will remain this way until the #8 signal has gone down.

Although I wanted to hold off on this piece of news till Monday, it was simply to great to pass up. IMAX theaters opened up showtimes for pre-selling today and the response has been enormous. Most showtimes are already 30-40% full with peak showtimes nearing the 50% mark. The catch? This was only open to those who have a PPS account. Tickets for the rest of the public go on sale on July 2 but I suspect these showtimes will be 70-80% full by then.

Great for TASM, I expected worse :D

Amazing Spider-Man OD: Between $600,000-$650,000 (no actual given)

That is pretty good. While Amazing won't reach the likes of The Avengers/Transformers 3, it should settle somewhere in the HP 7-2 area.

TASM summer Friday couldnt match TA May Thursday.

TA was coming off of a 3 month weekend low. TASM was coming off of a fairly good weekend. Also, OW holiday means less admissions on opening day.Admissions will pick up a lot this weekend.

Yeah, it's way too soon to judge :)

No typhoon when TA was released.

Yeah but TA had no competition before its release. For a market like HK where theaters are small, competition is key. Look what happened to Harry Potter 7-2 and Kung Fu Panda 2. Harry Potter 7-2 had an outstanding OW but competition from Mr. Popper's Penguins and Transformers 3 softened its OW. Kung Fu Panda 2 had a disappointing run and HK became one of its lowest Asian territories. If the roles were reversed and Harry Potter 7-2/Transformers 3 switched release dates, Harry Potter 7-2 would have ended up taking the OW record.Typhoon or not, Motorway surprised last week. This week, it's holding up well in the face of TASM opening. I'd say The Amazing Spider-Man is doing exceptionally well given how Motorway has done so far. Also, the typhoon had little impact on admissions. The high warning signal never occurred during theater operating hours so I fail to see how this typhoon actually helped Amazing Spider-Man. 3 Motorway -- 9,713 -- +35.7%
4 The Dictator -- 2,319 -- +29.8%
5 Silenced -- 1,592 -- --

Before anyone starts going on about how TASM increased only by a small percentage, let me point out that the admissions website lost over 10,000 admissions yesterday for the 3D version of TASM. It's probably closer to more than 15,000 admissions lost. 2D version also saw admissions disappear in the middle of the day. There's no explanation as to how it happened.

In reality, 3D admissions is closer to 80-85k for the day, maybe even 90k. 2D admissions could have made up to 20,000. With data lost, it's hard to predict but I'm estimating that TASM's opening Saturday is about $950,000.

Very good for Motorway.

3 Motorway -- 3,956 -- +61.3%
4 Men in Black 3 3D -- 876 -- --
5 Prometheus 3D -- 794 -- +118.1%

I expect at least 100,000 admissions today for the 3D version of The Amazing Spider-Man.

Have to commend Motorway. It is doing very well even though Spider-Man is clobbering everything.

Similar to what I expected a day ago.Now let's see if the holiday can really ramp up its admissions. I would be ecstatic if it broke out with 1.4m.

OK, I guess your estimates would be pretty good for TASM.You can't easily compete wit a giant like The Avengers btw :)
