As I said in the previous post great opening for The revenant for a new record for Dicaprio. Hard to predict from OW, but it should make at least 2M. Also a really good opening for RA2, especially considering the original wasn't even released in theatres. SW7 is still holding very well, and has now passed Ted 2 for 4th biggest 2015 release (where it will remain), aiming for a 3.4-3.5M total. TGD has also had good enough legs so that it is no longer the lowest grossing Pixar release, passing Cars 2 despite a smaller opening weekend.

Great hold for Ride Along 2, but I was expecting better from the Revenant. That is a pretty good opening for The Big Short, but a bad one for The Finest Hours (but in line with its DOM opening).

Low drops for most films this week which make The Revenant's -32% look mediocre in comparison, might finish with 1.7M. RA2 and The Big Short on he other hand with great holds but from low enough bases that they shouldn't make that much. Brooklyn has another of those films that aren't suposed to make that much and end with Middling numbers. SW7 is still sticking around with small drops and a great total, at this point it can lose it's showtimes and quickly disappear, but it ha already done its job.

 

Next week has Deadpool which should do well and How To Be Single.

Just like elsewhere, a great opening for Deadpool. amongst Superhero films It has already passed the totals of Green Lantern, all 3 Fantastic Fours, 3 X-Mens (2, 3 and Wolverine) and the original Iron Man. As for its ranking for its OW:

So Deadpool is the fifth biggest opening for a superhero film, and those above it are all MCU films not known for good legs. An average Multiplier of 3.4 would take it to 2.25M total.

 

Also opening this weekend was How To Be Single, which had a good opening. The Revenant continues with its mediocre drops and Ride Along with its great holds.

No new openers being tracked, drops were mostly average except for the better holds for the Oscar films, with an expansion and big percent jump for Spotlight, though it still won't make much money in the end. Deadpool should be the first $2M film of 2016 next weekend and will eventually become the biggest superhero film since TASM in 2012.

 

Next weekend is another calm weekend with just zoolander 2 being tracked, but after the big stuff will come quickly. in two weeks we get KFP3 and a week after that Zootopia and BVS opening on the same day.

Zoolander 2 flops as expected, Deadpool has now passed Avengers: AOU, and is close to passing IM3. Grimsby, while bad for a Sacha Baron Cohen film, is still doing much better than Domestic.

Next week finally brings in a new blockbuster with the opening of KFP3.

Kung Fu Panda 3 opens significantly below the the second film, but it is also releasing at a different time so it's not really comparable. Maybe more comparable is Rio that had a similar opening before passover (but holidays don't really align either). KFP3 is a second sequel and has Zootopia and and BVS opening on Wednesday and doesn't seem to have very good WOM, so It's legs could suffer. I don't think it ends with much more than 2M, which would be a significant drop from the last two that both made about 3M

 

Deadpool has a good hold and has now passed IM3, will be interesting to see how it holds in the face of BVS to see how far it can still go.

 

Next weekend should be huge with BVS and Zootopia opening on Wednesday in time for the Purim Holiday (Wednesday-Friday).

Massive Purim holiday Weekend.

 

BVS beats AOU by 41% to easily set a new superhero opening weekend record. it also just barely edges out SW opening for the new fourth place amongst all openers. Even with really bad legs like MOS had it would still become at least number 3 amongst all superhero films and would mean the top 3 would all include Batman in them. even with mediocre legs It would still become the biggest superhero film.

 

Zootopia also has a fine opening, and is well ahead of all the previous WDAS films. this opening puts it in the middle between last years animated openers Inside Out (423K OW, 4.9M total) and Minions (616K OW, 5.57 total). Those films didn't have an inflated OW and long summer legs, so Zootopia shouldn't match those films, but if it takes advantage of the Passover holiday (the most important holiday of the year) in three weeks then it should still get big blockbuster numbers.

 

KFP3 uses the holiday to get a 56% increase from its OW, but this should be the high water mark, and unless it has a great passover holiday still expect a total around 2M.
