iceroll
I didn't really understand this movie... but it looked pretty and the score was good. B
Jake Gittes
Unbelievably beautiful, but overplotted and contrived towards to the end (when Kaguya suddenly drops the Moon twist). From what I understand, Takahata stuck very closely to the original story, which I can't blame him for considering it's such a revered piece of Japanese folklore. But I can't deny the execution took me a bit out of the movie. Still, it's tied with Lego for my favorite animated film of 2014 and it better win that fucking Oscar now. TalismanRing
A beautiful moving film about what it means to be truly alive while also giving insights into feminism, poverty and class that all serve the characters and story and fit into the era and place. It charmed me, made me cry, made me laugh, and at times it awed me. One of the finest films to ever come out of Ghibli.

Goffe
I was not thrilled with the direction the movie was taking before the moon twist, but at least it made sense and had a point to it. I still can't quite grasp the why and the point of the last 30 minutes and how it relates to the rest of the movie. It is not a bad movie because there are many terrific individual scenes. 60/100 The last movie of my Ghibli marathon The Wind Rises 100/100 Grave of the Fireflies 90/100 Only Yesterday 90/100 Spirited Away 85/100 Princess Mononoke 80/100 The Secret World of Arrietty 80/100 Porco Rosso 75/100 My Neighbors the Yamadas 75/100 Ponyo 75/100 Howl’s Moving Castle 70/100 Ocean Waves 70/100 When Marnie Was There 65/100 The Tale of the Princess Kaguya 60/100 Whisper of the Heart 60/100 Castle in the Sky 60/100 Kiki’s Delivery Service 55/100 The Cat Returns 50/100 My Neighbor Totoro 45/100 From Up on Poppy Hill 40/100 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind 35/100 Tales from Earthsea 25/100 Pom Poko 15/100 Edited November 8, 2015 by Goffe

It emphasises that life can be unpredictable and the coming of death even more so (which is what the moon signifies in the film). So it is best to live your life the way you want to as opposed to Kaguya who to the most extent let her Earth parents decide her fate for her out of fear of hurting or disrespecting them.
