eh I'm all for giving women personal autonomy but this lowkey sounds like someone who has been brainwashed . She doesn't even refute any of the stuff  her parents said (Ezra befriending her when she was 12, supplying her drugs, physical abuse allegations etc).

  2. It's kinda sad how the movie basically destroyed the legacy of musical lol.

It was a huge success, won a Tony for best musical and had a lot of fangirls/fanboys. Like this and Hamilton were the 2 huge musicals popular among young people 4 to 5 years ago.  Then the movie came out and now all the former fans were embarrassed to admit that they ever liked it.

Is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie going to be the next dumb celebrity feud for the TikTok crowd to obsess over?

The situation isn't really similar to JD and AH at all, but I guess since it's occurring close in time, it makes people think of that.

It will probably amount to nothing but I've seen like 3 different semi viral tweets about Brad and Angie and with negativity being thrown his way. I don't really know the details of what he's complaining about but he should probably let it go lol.

It's old. He sued them in Feb.

lol idk the details about the cases but I've seen 2 different us weekly articles in a week about Brad and Angie that i can only assume are from Brad's PR teams because why now lmao? I know twitter isn't real life but he really needs to cool it. 🤷‍♀️Brad is well liked but twitter is already trying to start to form a hate campaign against him lol.

You're making a lot of bizarre and insane projections about this movie

I'm so confused the last time I posted here was May 9 before the Cannes festival and the reviews..and I said I thought it would make 350-400 WW but that Elvis wasn't as popular among the younger generation as Queen.....

I really don't see where I've made "a lot of bizarre and insane projections"

I think Spider (Jake and Neytiri's adopted human son) will be the breakout character of The Way of Water.

I already see interest in him and his potential story from many comments online and he stands out even just in the trailer just for the fact that he's human.

He might elevate many people's opinion about Avatar and in my opinion, here's why:

      Hide contents

I think one of the reasons why many people especially young people online reject and "forget" Avatar and its story and characters is because the film is misanthropic and cynical. The humans are the bad guys, they destroy planets. The main character literally abandons humanity because we are a lost cause and becomes a blue alien at the end of the film. There is no hope for humanity.

This is basically the anti-thesis to Star Wars, Marvel and the like where even the most ordinary human can become a hero with amazing abilities and save the universe (or multiverses). Humans always win. These movies feed the idealism and optimism of young (usually male) people. Notice how they are also the ones who have been the most vocal about their disdain or apathy for Avatar. It is really interesting.

And this is where Spider comes in (James Cameron is very smart). Spider will appeal to those who need a human face as THE hero. Spider will represent the best parts of humanity like how Peter Parker, Luke Skywalker, etc. do while still remaining human and not be some blue alien. Unlike Jake Sully who was a Na'vi for most of his screen time. Of course I'm not saying Spider will be anywhere near as big a pop culture icon as Peter or Luke. But his character will definitely be beneficial to the franchise and the overall story. His name is also memorable. One other factor why the GA can't remember any names is because the Na'vi have foreign sounding fantasy names that you've never heard before in real life.

I can already sense that some of the most emotional scenes in the sequels will be with him and his adoptive mother Neytiri who resents humans. Now that's a really interesting arc.

But of course this is all just a speculation and at worst, Avatar's sequels will just suffer the same fate as the first movie. Which is to make the most money out of any movie in history but be "forgotten" and downplayed in the 2030s when the magic of the theatrical experience wears off and can't be replicated on streaming platforms.

    Side note:

Despite being misanthropic and cynical, Avatar still struck a chord with millions of people because of its universal themes and story. At its core, it's essentially a love story between a paraplegic human soldier and an otherworldly alien princess. That specific concept (a human loving an alien) is something I have never seen before and I am a sucker for star-crossed lovers. Jake and Neytiri's love is the link between the human world and the alien world and transcends race, species, planets and universes. Eywa chose Jake for a reason. People love that concept of "destiny" especially when it comes to romance. That comforting and beautiful concept is one big reason why every demographic got hooked aside from the jaw dropping visuals of the alien landscapes. Such a shame that a love story with such a grand and epic scale is constantly reduced to just "Pocahontas in space". I mean Titanic was just "Romeo and Juliet on a sinking ship" (although Titanic was also reviled and downplayed back in the day when it used to be the highest grossing film *wink wink*). The Lion King is just "Hamlet but with animals" too but I digress.

I disagree somewhat  with what you said about Titanic being "reviled and downplayed". Sure it was made fun of, but that's mostly because it was a romance movie popular among teenage girls and not a male oriented action movie and people make fun of and mock anything that's popular among girls. If Avatar was made fun of or  joked about a lot today that's one thing but before this trailer I feel no one really TALKED about Avatar. Titanic had much more impact on the cultural zeitgeist than Avatar imo.

But you actually might be on to something about the somewhat cynical nature  of the film that paints no hope for humanity being a factor in the movies perceived lack of impact in popular culture and younger audiences. I know nothing about the plot but you're right that Cameron incorporating a young male human character is an extremely smart move.

Titanic is really the only film phenomenon where everyone knows who "Jack and Rose" are. I bet in some countries people don't know who Kate Winslet is except that she's Rose.

    Mmmm I disagree

Not including movies where the character's name is in the title (Indiana Jones, Superhero movies, Harry Potter, etc)

There's Jack Sparrow, Neo, Tyler Durden, Sarah Connor, Hannibal Lector, Kevin McAllister, Elle Woods, Ellen Ripley, Vito, Scarlett O'Hara, all the OG Star Wars characters... I would say anyone who has watched those movies remembers the character's name.

I'm not saying it matters that people don't know the characters 'name in Avatar (even though funny enough that's the one thing I do remember from Avatar) but I think a major factor in whether a character's name is remembers is if the story is more character oriented vs plot driven. (also how many times their name is said in the movie lmao. )

Ironically despite the tension between Jim and comicbook fandoms (due to his comments and box office results), Jim himself is a superhero. He's going to save cinema... and who knows what else? Maybe the planet with his enviromentalist themes in the films... I mean the first film actually did actually do some measurable good for the enviroment

???? Ok I think there's a point when blind stanning goes a bit too far lol

Maybe the Cannes premiere will change my mind, and I'm aware this movie is likely really, really, really good,

Are you sure about this lol??? I'm highly skeptical of the awards hype this is getting based on what I've seen. I love Baz but his style is a bit divisive and it's not like he's known for getting stellar reviews.

I somewhat agree with the rest of your assessment though.   But I see this making around 250 - 350 million WW which would be good for this. (hopefully the budget isn't outrageous lol). This will definitely do better internationally than SOC because Elvis is not a black rapper and is more of a globally known figure. Also this will probably get some love from older audiences. However it's definitely not breaking out to Bohemian Rhapsody's levels. Queen's songs are still pretty ubiquitous among young people. They were able to just sell the movie based on the songs and Rami's strong performance.

I don't really understand why they didn't play more of Jailhouse Rock or even Can't Help Falling in Love  in the trailer. Those are the only Elvis songs i would that are close to the ubiquity of Queen's songs. I kinda understand why they used Unchained Melody as the main song but that's not even his song and I don't think his Indianapolis performance is  well known among young people. Freddie's Live Aid concert was much more well known.

  10. Obviously the trailer was going to get some attention. Literally everyone saw the first movie and the 13 year gap between the movies give it a sense of nostalgia. It obviously won't flop but I'm prediction like 400-450 domestic.  It doesn't have the novelty of the first, and I stand by the fact that the first did not have much impact in popular culture in the years following its release.

i think there was a few years there when the music biopics calmed down but they've come back in vogue in a big way recently since Bohemian Rhapsody

I don't mind them but they are usually very paint by the numbers. I know Baz can be controversial but I do hope he brings some of wackiness and theatrics to the movie.

I hope they find time to depict the black talent in rock and roll and R&B  during that period. It seems B.B King plays a somewhat prominent role in the film based on the trailer (and the casting of Kelvin Harrison Jr.)  and they have actors cast Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Little Richard, Arthur Crudup and Big Mama Thornton so I'm hopeful they will explore some of that.

It was a long time before I learned that Priscilla and Elvis had divorced before his death. They were married and he died, I thought she was his widow.

They want to make money and get awards, so probably not... When you have Priscilla herself singing the movie's praises and the man himself, that makes it much harder for the "Elvis was a predator, his legacy should be canceled!" narrative to take hold. Especially since Priscilla became a celebrity in her own right (solid 80s/90s acting career), her perspective doesn't just get dismissed like some other women who were preyed upon by older male artistic geniuses.

I'm not going to get into a debate of the morality of grooming (or sleeping with) a 14 year old when you're 24

I'm just genuinely curious on how they will depict it. They show him kissing Priscilla in the trailer so I'm assuming their romance is in the film some capacity . Usually in in these musical biopics they show how the singer meet their love interest.  Will they skip over how they met? Age her up? Or will they actually depict him starting a relationship with a 14 year old? I can't be the only person curious lol.
