Spielberg is clearly the real star of West Side Story and DeBose is the only performer in it up for a nomination (and is the frontrunner in her category). It's too bad that Zegler wasn't given an invite, but I wasn't expecting many cast members from West Side Story to be in attendance anyway since the movie is more of a director showcase than an actor's one. The cast for Dunkirk was MIA from awards shows all season long when it it was up, as another example.

The randomness of the presenters is likely a combination of the over-the-top efforts to produce the most everything-for-everyone show ever to hit those 40 million viewers again, actor availability and scheduling conflicts, and the possible chance a lot of people are boycotting the ceremony over all the changes that have pissed people off. I noticed that Frances McDormand and Chloe Zhao have yet to be announced as presenters, and if they aren't between now and Sunday, we'll know.

This was last year so the covid excuse doesn't hold

Disney then, wonder why Disney decided to not invite her (or one of the many movie nominees giving one of their 3 tickets), but one could imagine they have long list of people to weight on.

To make it short, that was a Disney call not the Academy.

It's especially weird because She is in Snow White which is Disney AND it's on ABC. I also find it hard to believe Spielberg has no pull to get the star of his musical a ticket if he really wanted to. It's very strange.

  3. I am so surprised that with their "chasing of younger audiences" They didn't announce actual ACTORS popular among young people. Like announce a Spider-man reunion??? Have Andrew Garfield perform a song from Tick Tick Boom? Is Timothee Chalamet busy? Zendaya? The Rock? Ryan Reynolds??  Heck even announcing the Squid Game cast makes more sense than a lot of these desperate announcements. Also did they ask Billie Eillish and Beyonce to perform?

Maybe they tried and they all said no lol.

I'm surprised the Williams sisters, who would actually make sense to present weren't announced.

What they're doing is turning off a lot of their core audience.

With how much they exploded membership, having issue getting ticket will get ultra common I imagine

    https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/movies/la-et-mn-oscars-tickets-20180228-story.html

Over the past two years, most everyone has applauded the motion picture academy’s decision to add nearly 1,500 new industry professionals as a long-needed step toward diversifying the group’s ranks.

But the ever-increasing enrollment has created one small problem:

It’s almost impossible to get a ticket to the Oscars these days unless you’re willing to beg or engage in some serious wheeling and dealing.

And that was in 2018, got quite worst since.

The Studios get a bunch of invites more or less in line with the numbers of movie nominated, if WB did not give one to an major actor of a major Oscar movie, it is to them to ask why I think, not the academy.

Even paying member cannot all get an ticket now, they use a lottery.

If they knew WB would have not used an invited on her, maybe they could/should made her a presenter just to reserve her a ticket.

I would imagine that if we would take the time to look how are those agent/agency it would become clear what is going on (and what is gained by the Oscar), agency have quite the power.

I'm sorry I didn't finish reading this but there is absolutely no reason the lead actress of a movie with 7 nominations should be overlook for a ticket lol. And it's Disney not WB.

Regardless I can't think of a single actor below 30 that has shown that he/she can open an original film on their name alone and I doubt we will get one with the way hollywood is trending

uncharted opened to 50 million. With mediocre reviews and with the core fanbase hating it.

Not denying your point, but streamers and youtubers have bigger followings on social media because is literally their job to harvest huge followings. Most Hollywood stars use social media either to talk of personal stuff, to do an ad here and there, but barely any of them put as much effort as digital creators to build an community, so I don't think is very fair to compare.

exactly. Most actors barely post on social media. Of course they won't have a huge following. A lot of tiktok stars are flash in the pans with a life span of 2-3  years.

Actors like Dwayne Johnson who are actually  social media savvy have  like 278 million followers

Even then, if you look at the young actors that are popular among Gen Z, they have a decent amount of followers.

    Zendaya - 134 million

    Tom Holland - 64.7 million

    Timothee Chalamet - 17.3 million

    Florence Pugh - 7.1 milliion

    Anya Taylor Joy 8.7 million

Sure the top tiktokers have more followers than then, but I would argue that the actors' fame is more sustainable then a lot of tiktokers and streamers. There are tiktokers that were huge 2 years ago are practically irrelevant now.

Tier 3: become famous as a result of high profile big screen films (major staying power)

Current: Tom Holland, Timothe Chalamet, Austin Butler (soon, Elvis & Dune 2 = big deal)

Past:  Ben Affleck, Heath Leger, Josh Hartnett

The people that are in tier 3- who achieve fame primarily though major motion pictures - almost always feel bigger than those in tiers 1 or 2 simply because audiences "meet" them through this platform. They have the highest profiles, see they pay increase the fastest, and generally have first dibs at the biggest roles.

Maybe wait until Elvis is released and Austin Butler is officially cast in Dune before you call him "Tier 3 famous" lmao.

That’s the issue with streaming, it’s very fickle. There is so much content that people move onto the next thing very quickly. Even the stranger things kids seem irrelevant now. The jury is still out on many of the young stars today.

over saturation definitely plays a big part in the lack of huge stars for sure. A million different shows and movies to stream,  youtube videos to watch and tiktok videos make it hard for there to be a "star" necessarily.  However like I said, I do think the people I mentioned above have potential to be big stars due to their popularity with Gen Z. Whether that potential is realized, idk.

As for Stranger Things kids. They are still young. A lot of child actors don't transition well to adult roles, especially if they aren't traditionally movie star attractive. We'll have to wait and see on them. I hear a lot about Millie Bobby Brown stiill.

I still think it’s a dumb comparison. Longevity with teen stars like this is always borderline and none of them have even come close to proving themselves yet. There’s going to be another hot streaming show next week and then another one and another one. They are not even close to being in the same demand as the other people you mentioned. Stardom like this is always fleeting

Ok forget I mentioned them. Timothee Chalamet Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor Joy,  Saoirse Ronan and Tom Holland have potential to be big stars among Gen Z lmao.

Someone at work yesterday said that Jacob Elordi is the best actor of all time. If this is where we’re going with “Gen Z stars” (KJ Apa as the king of TV, L’il Huddy ranking higher than Freddy Mercury on all time greatest singers) I don’t want to be a part of it

*old man screams at cloud*. The majority of tiktok stars will not last longer than  a year. You can relax. A lot of the ones that were big 2 years ago are irrelevant now.

I don’t watch Euphoria, but this Jacob Ecoldry, @excel1 keeps mentioning has the looks to be the next big thing. Is he a good actor?

I have my own issues with Jacob Elordi but that's mostly due to his fame-whory ways and his dating life. His performance is good and he has a "movie star hunk" appearance. Whether he is the next best thing, idk.

  12. 8 minutes ago, snarkmachine said:

Now why would you put Saoirse Ronan in the same sentence as the actors on Euphoria 😭

The Euphoria cast minus Zendaya are exactly the type of flash-in-the-pan people that disappear after their hit show ends. Saoirse Ronan has four Oscar nominations at the age of 25

I'm talking about people popular among gen Z lol. I'm not comparing acting talent, of which Saoirse is clearly superior. I see a lot of people talk about Sydney Sweeney (who Sony just cast in their film) and Alexa Demie lmao. And Jacob Elordi's team is really trying to make him happen 🤣. Yeah most likely they might not have staying power but one could break out lmao.

  13. Now that Hollywood has sort of adjusted to streaming/social media and gen Z begins to drive movie sales, I can actually see some "movie stars" emerge. Timothee Chalamet is popular among gen Z and is set to be in Dune and Wonka next year, which should help him blow up even more. Then there's people like Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Anya Taylor Joy,  Saoirse Ronan, the Euphoria people. Tom Holland is one that is popular among Gen Z as well. We'll see if they have any staying power though.

Agreed.  I tried screaming from every rooftop that anyone predicting the end of movie theaters was dead wrong.

My next prediction, which I think has also come true or is about to for everyone, is that putting movies on streaming or going day and date with their strategy is a terrible business plan.  I think just about every studio has figured it out with Bob Chapek and Kareem at Disney being the last couple of idiots to not get it.

Such a bad business decision. It made sense during the height of the pandemic but legit no one is staying away from the theater because of fear of COVID anymore. I live in Ontario, one of the strictest places in the world for COVID restrictions and we're basically about to get rid of all the mandates.

Studios need to stop sending their movies directly to streaming.

LMAO at you ignoring my other reply because it demonstrated the gaping gaps in your knowledge of history. Move on to the next thing I guess

lmao I legit minored in American History in college.I'm very confident in my knowledge of history. I just didn't feel like arguing with someone who probably wasn't going to change their mind and cluttering up this thread. DM me if you care that much, I'll happily debate you there. But yes, moving on to the next thing lol.

And so you admit you've only seen Get Out??

There is clearly a general  uptick in movie going again.

yeah I think more studios should be sending their movies to theaters instead of streaming. People are clearly going to the movies more and holdovers are doing so well because there's not much to see.

I'm just so paranoid about the death of movie theaters. I've legit had anxiety about this lol.

I dont think it's fare at all. Just like I wouldn't call Jordan Peele out for only hiring POC whilst saving the white roles for villains. These people have earned the right to make the films they want to make

I think people should focus more on the diversity behind the camera instead when it comes to period dramas

LMAO you've only seen Get Out right??

To be honest he brought it upon himself. Why couldn’t he just made a fun girls movie?

Exactly, I don't know how people expect all the convo to be light and fluffy when this is literally a movie about the fucking atomic bomb, the most controversial and heavily debated military decision in recent history lol.

I'm looking forward to the movie but it's not like we know anything about the plot to discuss lol.

They had 2 large cities obliterated off the face of the earth and still took days to decide to surrender.  It would have been a bloodbath without the nukes.  There is zero evidence that Japan was on the verge of surrender without them.

They took DAYS to surrender? God forbid lol.

Like, even Dwight Eisenhower thought Japan was already defeated and that the bomb was not necessary.  Russia was also about to invade. They would have surrendered. Even before the bomb was dropped Japanese leaders were trying to  negotiate on a conditional surrender but Americans were hostile to the idea of conditional surrender. Funny enough the term of the conditional surrender were extremely similar to the terms of the unconditional surrender after the bombs anyway lmao.

They could have easily carried out a naval blockade or used the bomb in an unpopulated area if they wanted force an unconditional surrender so bad.

I'm not even a Japanese apologist because they have a lot they still haven't atoned for in WW2. And like I said before there were some benefits to the use of the bomb, namely preventing future large scale war, but America was shitty to do what they did and it was mostly just a power move lol.
