  1. Also, La La Land is an old fashioned colorful musical in 2017. It's not some bang-up safe choice that everyone likes. Shit is very divisive. I know alot of people that didn't like it, either because a. It was too hyped or b. It's an old fashioned musical in 2017 and that shit is not most people's cup of tea. And I say that as someone who loved it. La La Land always had the potential, especially with the hype, to divide people, and that ended up hurting it. It was not a safe bet at all. Also, I love how the narrative has gone from "La La Land is an old-fashioned Hollywood musical! Just shows how pretentious and out of touch Hollywood is!" to "La La Land got robbed for PC reasons! It's a huge hit that everyone loves" in the course of about about two days. Cognitive dissonance, y'all.
  2. You literally said one page ago that the reason most black people succeed in public life, with a few "special exceptions," is because they've been granted political advantage. That's like the literal definition of a racist comment. I've been cutting out calling people racist in fear of being called a "reactionary" person, but Jesus H. Christ, man.
  3. But that doesn't make any sense. Just because a movie can be important in political context doesn't it can't still be the best movie. I thought it was the best movie of the year, and I'm not just praising it for political reasons. Maybe see the movie before you say "they only won it because they're black!" That's completely unfair and hateful to the people who worked hard to make this movie. Maybe they just gave it because they thought it was the best? Why is that not even a possibility for you?
  4. Did you even see the movie? I highly doubt it. It was brilliantly acted and directed with a great story. Why is it impossible for you to consider that? Maybe it was just the best movie. Also, actual real people are affected by real people's political decisions. Maybe you shouldn't make those determinations about political issues based on an awards show. I've argued before that the Oscars are important, but that's just silly.
  5. I love how the "I'm not racist" crowd claims to be all for equality, but says "it's only because they're black!!" EVERY SINGLE TIME black filmmakers/actors win an award, get cast in a movie, has a breakout hit, or get praised in reviews. If you can't possibly accept that maybe sometimes black people win things because, you know, they deserve it, then I'm pretty sure "not racist" isn't the words to describe you.
  6. 2010: The Social Network, Black Swan, TS3, Inception, maybe True Grit (genre+hit), and yes, King's Speech (winner and a huge hit) 2011: The Help, Moneyball 2012: Argo (winner and big hit), Lincoln (classrooms forever), Django, Silver Linings (genre+hit) 2013: 12 Years, Gravity, Wolf of Wall Street 2014: Boyhood, Grand Budapest, Birdman (maybe), Selma (maybe) 2015: Spotlight, Mad Max, Martian and Revenant (genre+hit), maybe the Big Short or Bridge of Spies But who knows? What does remembered even mean? I'll probably remember Whiplash and Selma and Bridge of Spies forever, but who knows if anyone else really will. Kinda arbitrary, I suppose.
  7. Hidden Figures will be shown in classrooms for years. My nieces' elementary school is already doing screenings. An entire generation of kids will grow up watching that movie. Arrival, Hacksaw, and Hell or High Water all have the benefit of being genre movies so they'll show up on "best war movie" and "best western" and "best sci-fi" for years. Manchester is the type of well written and acted indie that gets plaudits for awhile. Fences is an iconic play with tremendous performances. I think it's the kind of pic that gets revisited. Lion....I got nothing. Maybe Dev Patel's hair leads to him getting cast as James Bond?
  8. I've thought Moonlight might be the movie remembered from this year since the moment it dropped, honestly. Definitely has staying power. This might actually help La La Land historically, and it'll always be remembered as an iconic musical and big time hit. Both of these movies seem like ones we'll be talking about 20 years from now, idk. I actually think this entire Best Pic slate will hold up well for various reasons.
  9. I guarantee you none of the people saying "Moonlight won because it is about gay and black people!!" probably never saw the fucking movie. Grow up. It's well deserved. So is La La Land. Both of them are top 5 Best Pic winners of the past 15 years, frankly. We should be happy that good movies exist. Saying a movie won just because of what it was about without watching it makes you look ignorant.
  10. I hope Warren Beattying becomes a verb from this day forth. "I got called into my bosses office and I heard I was getting a promotion, but it turned out they were Warren Beattying me and I got fired."
  11. My dude Leo wanted to ruin Warren Beatty for making another Howard Hughes movie. The way of the future, indeed.
  12. I mean of course there's something to be said for them rewarding the best performance and all but there's also something to be said for stop rewarding dudes who sexually assault women, idk.
  13. Just a reminder for everyone who says that the Casey Affleck thinkpieces are annoying and that him not winning is just political correctness, this man snuck into women's bed and forcibly groped and fondled them, and then embarassed them in public and had them fired when they came forward. It's not like he just said something problematic or voted Republican or some shit that I'd whine about. Dude did some really fucking creepy shit and hurt alot of women.
  14. Liberty City is about 20 minutes from my house. Many of my closest friends are from there. That speech was incredible. South Florida representing in front of millions. Moonlight really is monumental, too.
  15. Janelle Monae is unreal. Brie is obviously killing it but Janelle has been my celebrity crush for a minute now. Damn.
  16. Ryan Gosling has hit "Fuck it, I'm just gonna wear the Seinfeld pirate shirt in front of 50 million people" level of handsome celebrity.
  17. You or Jayhawk should get this as a tattoo. I think that'd be cool. In fact, you guys should get this exact tattoo as a matching friendship tattoo.
  18. Straight up Bill Paxton dying is so sad and the "surgical complications" thing is terrifying. My mom is having hernia surgery soon, and my grandfather died during a routine procedure dude to doctor's error. I will never go under the knife unless absolutely necessary for my life. I had skin grafs once without any of that stuff because it terrifies.
  19. I always love it when people bring their moms, straight up. I don't even mean that sarcastically. I would be 35 and married with two kids and I'd still bring my mom. Shouts to Lin Manuel Miranda for that. Javier Bardem does it every time.
