The last time my personal favorite of the year won best picture or even came close was 2006 when the Departed took it home. And I still enjoy the Oscars. I LIKE when people have different tastes or find different movies the best than me. It doesn't make me want to stop watching. It almost makes me want to watch more.

I mean for a stupid thing that no one watches or cares about the Oscar board is always jumping the entire year, movies make millions of dollars based on nominations, an entire industry thrives on them, and the Oscars are the most watched telecast in America after the Superbowl and Conference Championships every year- more than the State of the Union, NBA or MLB Finals, or any oher football game. So I don't really buy that narrative fully. They clearly matter to some people, otherwise the Oscars wouldn't be the main topic of conversation on places like this from October to February.

I'd agree with the first three, but Spotlight really rocked me. A seriously good film. So glad it won over the Revenant and Big Short which were gaining momentum, and I liked those films fine. I rewatched the Artist and it didn't quite hold up as well on the small screen, but damned if I didn't love it in the theater. It may be a stunt but I would rather watch a really good stunt than the alternative.

I get your point but I couldn't disagree more. I believe that film is one of the most potent ways to make lasting change, and the Academy Awards are the biggest night in film, so eh. If you believe that film/art can have any role in mobilizing people or fighting for something positive - and it obviously does- then I think there's something to be said for the awards for that art having political consideration. But I know no one here tends to agree.

True. I think I still gave both of them Boffy noms that year, but I can see it. IDK, MacBeth really did stick with me. I enjoyed that movie a whole bunch. I think Michael B. Jordan in Creed not only deserved the Best Actor that year, but might be the best leading male performance since 2013. I think it just takes alot to make a very human, normal, non-showy protagonist into an iconic, radiating performance like that. I know I'm not the only Creed stan here, but I think Jordan is just as deserving of huge praise as Stallone, and Stallone was fantastic.

I'm sure it won't have any affect, but my own personal rooting for Denzel is magnified by it. IDK, sexual assault is a bad thing and I, uh, don't like it when people do that nor do I want to cheer for them. But he'd be a better winner than alot of mediocre performances that have won lately, for sure.

Man I agree that Leo was a bit hammy and silly last year, but I just never got into the hype for Matt Damon playing himself and winning an Oscar for it. Maybe because there's way actors who are way more interesting playing characters that have alot of themselves in it. IDK, The Martian kind of let me down. I know it's lame to say the book is better, but the book is way better. Michael B. Jordan was the Best lead Actor performance of last year, no doubt for me. Also weird that Tom Hanks is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood and he couldn't get buzz for a nom for his best performance in 20 years last year. Bridge of Spies rocked.

Elle, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Jackie are the only noms in any major categories I missed, so I wish I could judge the Best Actress race better. I thought Negga was more impactful than Stone even though I liked La La Land better than Loving, FWIW. Also, real shame that Viggo got nominated for fucking Captain Fantastic but missed for A History of Violence, one of my top 10 lead actor roles of the 21st century. Dumb things happen.

God, I hope Denzel wins Best Actor. They're about equal performances in my book, but Christ, the thought of Brie Larson, advocate for victims of sexual assault who won an Oscar for playing a rape victim, having to hand an Oscar off to creepo sexual assaulter Casey Affleck is cringe worthy. And also, if Hollywood is going to be a real platform for change and progressive values (which they absolutely should be!), they have to walk the walk. They can't make speeches about President Pussygrabber and then give Best Actor to one, too. I don' think character should play a role in these kind of things - T.O. should have been a first ballot Hall of Famer! - but a sexual assaulter in this year? Nah, son. And Denzel was fucking great, too. Love that man. I'm sure that this will be followed by a bunch of posts telling me what a PC idiot I am or something.

This is completely anecdotal and probably useless evidence, but I've had about 15 friends (including all of an entire group chat!) say they heard Get Out was great and they're really excited to see it tonight. It's a small sample, but rarely does buzz pickup that fast on a Saturday among my friend groups. I wouldn't be stunned to see this get a solid bump today. It's really picking up steam.

Best Supporting Actor predictions-2016
Cmasterclay replied to Impact's topic in And The Winner Is...
I actually really liked Lion and Patel was good in it but honestly everyone agrees that his half of the movie was significantly lacking compared to the other part. Kinda feels like that new haircut is carrying him, tbh. Hedges was good but his performance has really faded from memory compared to Affleck/Williams. Bridges and Shannon brought humanity and intrigue to what could have been very rote characters, but neither feels like a winner to me. Ali deserves it. He came through that movie like a hurricane. I would have given Rhodes/Holland/Sanders nominations over most people in this category, honestly. This has to go to someone from Moonlight. Last year's Supporting Actor category rocked. There was about 15 deserving people, and alot of the very best (Del Toro, Isaac, Jason Mitchell, Dano) didn't even really come close. Step it up, 2017.
