IFP is positioned as the ideal demographic counter programming to this weekend’s behemoth. I would not be surprised if it holds better than everything except BP. I only thought the movie was so-so but there is undoubtedly an opening in the marketplace for the film this weekend. -

A more interesting bet would BP taking over RPO or B by Friday, even if only temporarily. -

Is anyone besides me intentionally not seeing AIW this weekend? I just don’t feel like fighting the crowds and the parking headaches. I’ll venture to see it next week possibly. -

Here is another member of the 20 times club, provided he attends the showings he purchased for the next couple of days. A couple of the showings in his video are additional tickets he bought for others for his showings. Only the showings were counted, not the extra tickets. Insane attendance of this movie is a badge of honor for some people. -
That Blockers hold this weekend was pretty impressive in the face of two new comedies opening, one of which being another R rated comedy. It's going to lose a lot of screens this week due to it being ninth of out ten for PTA in the Top 10, though. Still, it should end up north of $65M which is surely far more than was expected.

There is a small army of people who have seen it 20+ times. I have posted a few in this thread and there are others. I am guessing that number increases by 20 fold or more if you just count the number of people who have seen it 5+ times. Moviepass has almost certainly enabled this. It's simply amazing how a $40M grosser has so many repeat viewers and by repeat, I mean more than twice. I think Amateur status for Love, Simon begins at three viewings. -

Here's yet another member of the 20 or More Club. The people who love this movie, really, really love this movie. -
The first half of the film is pleasant and mildly humorous. It's a typical comedy with touches of a rom com interspersed. Unfortunately the film goes south once Renee abandons her friends at dinner to join her co-workers. Pretty much everything after that point is either stupid or nonsensical and definitely not funny. The redemption arc with the friends was unsubstantial and I don't know how or why Renee wasn't yanked off the stage by security when she took over the presentation. I don't have many qualms with the resolution with the boyfriend since it seemed like he never really thought they had broken up. Regardless, the last half of the film is a mess. Michelle Williams was truly magnificent, though. I am kind of wondering if she was given an entirely different script than all of the other actors as her character seemed like she belonged in a different movie. In fact, I want to track down some interviews with Williams where she talks about her character and the choices she made. Hopefully she doesn't have to wait too many more years before she wins an overdue Oscar as she is certainly the best actress of her generation without an Academy Award with her name on it. My score: 5/10

The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo
LonePirate replied to grim22's topic in Numbers and Data
Assuming the ad was indeed targeting women, why advertise during an expensive event when the female audience would be relatively small (compared to the total audience)? Wouldn’t it be a better use of ad dollars buying several ads on a television program/event with a much larger female audience? It just seemed like an odd place for a LotP ad. I think they are testing reactions from audiences besides the primary demo. -

Um, why in the world is Life of the Party running an ad during an NBA playoff game? Is there some hidden market the film is trying to reach with a commercial during a basketball game? -
The drops this weekend within the Top 10 were exceptionally strong. When a poorly received horror film drops less than 60% despite a well-received horror movie also being in the marketplace and with the second weekend of a video game based movie only dropping a shade over 40%, then it was a good weekend for movies overall. The middle of April is typically a dead zone, especially without a Fast & Furious movie opening during the month.

I'm guessing that theater and in particular that auditorium was chosen to demo the technology with Samsung probably ponying up the bulk, if not all, of the costs. It's a large but not incredibly large screen and the installation and auditorium closure time wouldn't be too disruptive as there are certainly much busier theaters in the Pacific chain. I'm sure the price will drop over time as not many theaters are going to spend hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars for the new screens, especially if they have purchased laser projectors in the past few years. They might be an option for a newly constructed theater, though.
